BY TIM NEVILLE HE road east out of Sören- berg rears up into a series of steep turns that climb the Glaubenbielen Pass, the T high point of a road the Swiss Army punched through the Alps more than 60 years ago. Though the occasional car and bus make the jour- ney to the top, these days much of the road belongs to cyclists. On a cool afternoon in mid-July I was one of them. I hadn’t ridden much all season, yet something primordial kicked in when I spied another biker just ahead. His calf muscles were swollen like Salamanca hams, and he was stooped over the bars, sweat drip- ping onto the pavement. Easy pickings, I thought, as I tore after him. Within moments I’d reeled him in. He, gasping; me, hardly out of breath: I felt, well, guilty. “You’re cheating!” he panted in German as I sped by. “You’ll be out of power soon!” He was right: I was cheating. With the mash of a button on my handle- bars, a 250-watt electric motor had spun to life and increased the power of my pedal strokes by 150 percent. Sud- denly I had my own domestique, a 26- volt brute that seemed to grab the saddle and shove me onward every Continued on Page 6 TOMAS VAN HOUTRYVE FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES A Flyer electric bicycle helps a rider get over the Grosse Scheidegg Pass in Switzerland.

  • Mountaineering and the Britisi-I Royal Family
278 MOUNTAINEERING AND THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY MOUNTAINEERING AND THE BRITISI-I ROYAL FAMILY By T. S. BLAKENEY [Adapted frorn a panzphlet privately issued in 1953.] URING the first half of 1953 two features tended to dominate the British Press the Monarchy and Mount Everest. These items of news became linked when, by the happiest of chances, word of the ascent of Everest broke upon the world on the morning of the Queen's Coronation. A fevv weeks earlier .H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh had accepted the patronage of the Mount Everest expedition, an encouraging circumstance that foreshado, ved the final triumph that made the climbing of the mountain seem like a deliberate Coronation Day gift to Her Majesty. It is not inappropriate, therefore, if, while the success of Sir John I-Iunt's party is still fresh in ou~ r minds, we take note of any other interest that has been sho,vn in mountaineering by our Royal Family. The record, it must be admitted, is a slender one and cannot compare with the mountaineering activities of foreign royalties, such as those former Honorary M embers of the Alpine Club, I{ing Albert I of the Belgians,1 the Duke of the Abruzzi2 and the Duke of Spoleto. Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales, would appear to be the earliest of our Royal visitors to the Alps, and to have crossed the Simplon Pass in I8I4. Her tour, and the question of whether she had crossed the St. Gotthard Pass, are discussed by Dr. G. R. de Beer in the Alpine Journal, vol.

Tour Descriptions Grindelwald - Kleine Scheidegg - Lauberhorntrail - Lauterbrunnen - Zweilütschinen - Grindelwald Facts: 40km, 1770 vertical and depth meters Ascent assistance: from Zweilütschinen by train back to Grindelwald. 28km, 1255 metres altitude difference, 1640 metres depth difference The tour starts with a longer but pleasant ascent of 1100 hm to the Kleine Scheidegg, the hub to the Jungfraujoch. Here we turn away from the crowd and drive with impressive views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau towards the Lauberhorn race track, world-famous for the legendary ski race in winter. Parts of it can also be ridden by bike. You ride over single trails past the Hundsschopf to Wengenalp. Two variants are available for the continuation to Lauterbrunnen. The technically easy variant (3ba) leads over forest paths and meadow trails, the difficult one (3bb) over partly technically very demanding trails with hairpin bends, roots and steps. Beware, especially when it's wet the wooden beams lying across are treacherously slippery. In Lauterbrunnen, the route leads comfortably along the Lütschine to Zweilütschinen. You can either take the train for the return journey to Grindelwald or tackle the 13km and 400m of altitude difference by yourself on side roads. Grindelwald - Männlichen - Romantic Trail - Kleine Scheidegg - Eigertrail - Grindelwald Facts: 34 km, 2000 vertical and depth meters Ascent assistance: if you want to start the tour shortened (e.g. on the day of arrival), you can take the Wengneralpbahn to Kleine Scheidegg from 4 pm. The bike transport is only possible from 16 o'clock. 14km, 400 meters altitude difference, 1400 meters depth difference Today's tour also begins with a long ascent to Männlichen.

  • Descriptions of the Daily Stages
Descriptions of the daily stages Day 1 Meiringen – Meiringen Facts: 32.5 km, 1650 metres altitude, 1650 metres depth The tour starts in Meiringen with a half-day tour, the morning is available for your arrival. Depending on your mood and time, you can tackle the initial ascent of 1100 m with an e-bike over side and forest roads or you can take the mountain railway up to the Mägisalp. From the Mägisalp you pedal 300 metres uphill on trails and gravel paths. Perfectly warmed up, the first single trail follows down to the cheese dairy. It's best to take this turn with you for the ascent to the Gibel. At the summit cross, the next descent starts from 2,000 metres above sea level to Meiringen (600 metres above sea level). Before you start, enjoy the 360° view over the snow-covered mountains, Lake Brienz and the Haslital. In Meiringen you will find your hotel and rest for tomorrow's extensive stage. Day 2 Meiringen – Grindelwald Facts: 41 km, 1900 m altitude, 2200 m depth. Variant with Postbus to Rosenlaui: 28 km, 1200 metres altitude, 1500 metres depth. The day starts with a long ascent over alpine roads. You will have mastered around 1300 metres in altitude by the time you reach Wandelalp. The high moor landscape is a real highlight for nature lovers. The descent into the Reichenbach Valley is a pleasure and only a bit more challenging in places. Arriving on the road to Grosse Scheidegg, we now recommend to take the post bus to save battery power and power for the last meters of altitude and trails of the day on the spectacular trip to Grosse Scheidegg.

The Trekker’s Trek— The Via Alpina across Switzerland: Part I Trip# 1828 18 August–2 September 2018 Approach to Grindelwald, Switzerland at sunset Backpacker magazine selected Switzerland’s Via Alpina as “The World’s Best Hike” for 370 km of scenery, cheese, and chocolate. “Your first view of the Eiger massif will spoil you for the rest of your hiking days. The Via Alpina could offer nothing else and still be world-class. The chocolate, historic villages, on-time trains, and luxe hut system are pure gravy.” The Via Alpina consists of a network of five long-distance hiking trails across the alpine regions of Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Monaco. Our trip focuses on the Swiss portion. It follows the Via Alpina trail which starts in Sargans in eastern Switzerland and then connects in the middle of the blue arrowed segment below with the Swiss National Route #1 to finish in Montreux on Lake Geneva. Henceforth when the term Via Alpina (VA) is used, it refers strictly to our chosen Swiss route as indicated by the red and blue arrows below. Via Alpina Trek Year I: red arrow Year II: blue arrow The VA crosses fourteen of the most beautiful Alpine passes. Hikers experience a fascinating variety of culture, geology and topography on a journey across six Swiss cantons. There is no better way to get to know the many facets of Swiss Alpine culture. The route is lined with one of the world’s most diverse variety of flora and fauna. Shifts, thrusts, depressions and rockfalls are evidence of an interesting geological structure.

Altres llibres de l'autor. Kev Reynolds A lifelong passion for the countryside in general, and mountains in particular, drives Kev's desire to share his sense of wonder and delight in the natural world through his writing, photography and lecturing. Thanks for the review. Vegetarians, special diets or allergies? The paddle steamers on Lac Leman are a fine way to reach Lausanne or Geneva, clear blue water below and hills above. It was about 2 years ago when I read this and thought I would go last year, but ended up going this September- October and ended up going East to West after all. We love to advise on Swiss travel. At first, in the east where you rise out of Sargans, the peaks are little known to all but those who live at their feet. Not sure why most people go east to west. Climb up through forests to high Alpine meadows and glacial lakes, with the sound of cow bells and dramatic mountain vistas all around. On the way is the Balmeregghorn, a grassy hill with long views over meadows and the deep Gental. When this guide was written there were no signposts for the alpine pass route, there were only many! At Planplatten a series of three cable cars can be taken to Meiringen to save some or all of the descent.
