  • Seconda Parte/ / Le Olimpiadi, Quelle Che Sei La Finlandia E Solo a Lillehammer E Sapporo T'è Capitato Di Non Vincere L'oro
Aveva già vinto i mille metri, Shani Davis.

WOMEN AND SPORT SCIENTIFIC REPORT SERIES ISSUE 1.5 • YEAR 2014 A GENDERED LENS ON SPORT FROM A HISTORICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Gerd von der Lippe PUBLISHED BY SISU SPORT BOOKS IN COOPERATION WITH WORLD VILLAGE OF WOMAN SPORTS A GENDERED LENS ON SPORT FROM A H ISTORICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Gerd von der Lippe Gerd von der Lippe is Phd in sportshistory and sportssociology and professor in sportssociology at Telemark University College, Norway. Her main area of research is centered on sports, gender and media and power from a historical and sociological perspective. Presently her focus lies on research about female and male image in today’s sports journalism. An important ongoing research project is ”Football, masculinities and war on the Gaza Strip”. SUMMARY Mass culture often assumes there is a fi xed ‘true’ femininity beneath the ebb and fl ow of daily life. We hear about ‘real women’, ‘natural women’, and the ‘deep feminine’, contrasted against ‘real men’, ‘natural men’, and the ‘deep masculine.’ Such constructions are hard to kill, and are continually being reconstructed in fi lms, popular books, magazines, television programmes, and the daily and weekly press. These constructions can be categorised as essentialist because they select single features that are purported to defi ne the core (essence) of femininity and masculinity. However, the concept of masculinity and femininity is inherently relational: Femininities exist only in relation to masculinities. Also, women and men are ‘doing gender’ in culturally specifi c ways. From this perspective, questions of gender depend on time, place, culture, tradition and upbringing, and in our case, the particular sport in question.
