Despite this he was well-respected by his pilots for both his flying and leading abilities, and had served in Palestine and Iraq prior to taking over. He shaped the men for combat – reading every situation and knowing when and how to attack, but also when to back out of a fight – helping them to hone their skills. This couldn’t have been more in contrast to No. 1 Sqn’s sister in 67 Wing, No. 73 Sqn, led by ‘Cobber’ Kain, who the No. 1 Sqn boys thought of as a “split-arse pilot”.

This booklet has been written in honour of every Old Petriburgian, known or unknown, who made that ultimate sacrifice. The details have been compiled from a variety of sources, including records held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the General Register Office and The National Archives. Some information has also been extracted from contemporary local newspapers held by the relevant Library and Archives Sections, and from other publications. Many details are from The King’s School’s own archives, including photographs and information kindly given to the school by relatives of those who died. This booklet owes much to the substantial contributions made by the late Commander C.J.G Willis, Peter Miller, Judith Bunten, Jenny Davies and Trevor Elliott, to each of whom many thanks are due.     ‘The Fallen’ of Prior Park College in Wartime Conflicts Introduction In the heart of Prior Park College is the Chapel, Our Lady of the Snows. Therein hangs the plaque to commemorate those who lost their lives during the Second World War. The designer and carver of the Memorial, Mr Hugh R Burt, spent twenty years of his early life in South Africa, where he was engaged in works of national importance, including the Rhodes Memorial and the carving of the whole of the ornamental decoration in the then new debating chamber of the Union Parliament in Cape Town. Back in England again he was entrusted with high class work for many eminent architects, including Sir Herbert Baker and Sir Edwin Lutyens. One of his most recent works was the carving of the Angel Cresting for the St James' Chapel in Exeter Cathedral, and the designing and carving of the ornamental work on the recently dedicated oak pulpit in the same Cathedral. (Gossip Bowl Dec 1952) Thousands of children, parents, teachers, visitors and alumni have walked past this plaque and maybe never looked up, never seen the faces that belong to these names, myself included until one day. Standing gazing up at the list of names, hearing the echoes of the Remembrance Day cry of “we shall remember them” I felt it was important to make these names real for all the Chapel visitors. These boys were like any class of students, some academic, some sporty, some slipping under the radar completely.

Scrogham noted as (RES) (Most read.) ​ ​ Adams, Jeremy Joan Of Arc: Her Story, New York: St. Martins Press, 1998. 264 pp. ​ ​ Adams doesn’t waste time lunging into the story of Joan the Maid-La Pucelle-, which begins with ​ ​ Joan making progress to crown the “Dauphin” Charles VII. Along with prayer and her divine guidance she wins many battles in the Hundred Years War, including the siege in Orleans, to help reclaim the Homeland for France from England. Despite her valiant efforts and success, Charles VII hesitated to listen to Joan in establishing dominance over Paris, and listened to his own advisers who disliked Joan. She remained inactive, until she was granted a small mission in Paris where she was captured, judged for heresy, and burned at the steak. Twenty-five years later, Pope Callixtus III reexamined the trial, and stated Joan was innocent, where she was named a martyr, and later a saint. Joan’s death had a major impact in France, by increasing English activity. Later though, military officials that fought with Joan lead French forces to claim initiative in both military and diplomacy in 1435, by having success in battle more than failure.
