Given its recent origin and continental insularity among tropical lowlands, the páramo evolved as a biodiversity hotspot, with a vascular flora of more than 3400 species and high endemism. Moreover, the páramo provides many ecosystem services for human populations, essentially water supply and carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities, mostly agriculture and burning- grazing practices, as well as climate change are major threats for the páramo’s integrity. Consequently, further scientific research and conservation strategies must be oriented towards this unique region. Botanical and ecological knowledge on the páramo is extensive but geographically heterogeneous. Moreover, most research studies and management strategies are carried out at local to national scale and given the vast extension of the páramo, regional studies are also needed. The principal limitation for regional páramo studies is the lack of a substantial source of good quality botanical data covering the entire region and freely accessible. To meet the needs for a regional data source, we created VegPáramo, a floristic and vegetation database containing 3000 vegetation plots sampled with the phytosociological method throughout the páramo region and proceeding from the existing literature and our fieldwork (Chapter 1).

Padulosi2 1ICIPE, PO Box 30772, Nairobi, Kenya 2Bioversity International,Via dei Tre Denari, Maccarese (Rome), Italy *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Since the mid-nineties, thanks to DNA sequence studies, phylogeny of Phaseoleae, Phaseolinae, and genus Vigna has been greatly improved. Genus Vigna is now reduced to a monophyletic group including five reorganized subgenera: American subgenus Lasiospron, a subgenus Vigna reduced to yellow and blue-flowered species which includes Bambara groundnut, subgenus Haydonia, Asian subgenus Ceratotropis, and a subgenus Plectrotropis enlarged to all pink-flowered species. At the infraspecific level, although a precise phylogeny is not yet established, the different wild and domesticated cowpea groups are now well known. The nine subspecies can be split between a “mensensis” forest group (remote secondary gene pool) and a “dekindtiana” savanna group (close secondary gene pool) which includes subsp. unguiculata. Subsp. unguiculata represents the primary gene pool and includes the domesticated cowpea, var. unguiculata, and its wild progenitor, var. spontanea (previously known as subsp. dekindtiana sensu Verdcourt non Harms). However, if cowpea domestication occurred before 1500 BC in Harlan’s African non-center, a precise center of domestication is yet to be identified. Introduction Over the last 30 years, cowpea and Vigna taxonomy has been reviewed by several workers, including Baudoin and Maréchal (1985), Ng and Maréchal 1985, Pasquet 1996a, Pasquet 1996b, and Padulosi and Ng (1997) with substantial improvement. It is however particularly from the mid-nineties onward, that novel molecular technologies applied to taxonomy, such as DNA finger printing, have provided major advancement on the front of the phylogeny of Phaseoleae, Phaseolinae, and genus Vigna.

Smith ABSTRACT. A combined parsimony analysis of the species of Phaseolus and closely related New World genera was performed with sequences from the nuclear ribosomal ITS/5.8 S and plastid trnK loci. Species relationships are resolved with high parsimony bootstrap support at all hierarchical levels. All species of Phaseolus, except five enigmatic ones, belong to one of eight clades. These eight clades show some morphological, ecological, or biogeographical distinction, and are informally recognized in a phylogenetic classification. The five enigmatic species, Phaseolus glabellus, P. macrolepis, P. microcarpus, P. oaxacanus, and P. talamancensis are weakly resolved as the sister clade to the Tuerckheimii group. An evolutionary rates analysis that biases for old age estimates suggests that the Phaseolus stem clade is the same age as the New World Phaseolinae crown clade with a maximum age of ca. 8 Ma. The Phaseolus crown is estimated to be no older than ca. 6 Ma, and the average age of the eight well supported crown clades within Phaseolus is ca.

    Phylogenetic systematics of Strophostyles (Fabaceae) by Erin Thais Riley-Hulting A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Plant Sciences Montana State University © Copyright by Erin Thais Riley-Hulting (2003) Abstract: The genus Strophostyles comprises three species centered in southeastern USA. Strophostyles umbellata is the most genetically variable at the nrDNA ITS locus with allelic variation concentrated in southern Appalachia. The geographically most widespread S. helvolus shows the least amount of intraspecific genetic variation at this locus, suggesting recent and rapid range expansion throughout the eastern half of the USA. Allelic variation of Strophostyles leiosperma is intermediate and centered in eastern Texas. The genus Strophostyles is apomorphically diagnosed by divergent stipules, persistent secondary floral bracts, a calyx with four acute lobes, and seeds often producing a waxy testa. In contrast, the closely related New World genera, Dolichopsis, Macroptilium, Mysanthus, Oryxis, Oxyrhynchus, Phaseolus, and Vigna subgenus Sigmoidotropis (the New World Phaseolinae), have mostly appressed stipules (except Macroptilium), deciduous secondary floral bracts, a calyx with 4-5 blunt lobes, and seeds with a consistently smooth testa. This is supported by the shared apomorphy of a gibbous upper margin of the keel petals and phylogenetic analyses of sequences from the nrDNA ITS region and CpDNA trnK locus. A rate-smoothed Bayesian likelihood analysis was performed on Old and New World Phaseolinae sequences with an imposed time constraint of 33.7 Ma for the closure of the tropical North Atlantic land bridge.
