Wednesday 1 August 2018: Newsletter Term 3 Edition 1

Principal’s News Welcome back to Term 3. Already it has been a very busy term with our sister school from Nagisa Junior High School in Hiroshima and a group of Korean students from Hongseong County visiting our school. Both groups have been welcomed into in our school with wonderful and stirring Powhiri. A big thank you to Donovan Farnham our Rumaki Teacher for facilitating the ceremony. I know both groups of visitors enjoyed the unique experience and learnt a lot about Māori culture.

Student Led Conference and Student Report Parent Survey As part of our Self Review process we would like to gain some parental feedback on the recent Student Led Conferences and Student Reports via a quick 3-minute survey. Please click on the link below to access the survey. Your feedback will go towards future developments in our reporting cycle. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FLWBKSG .

School App Pasadena is introducing a new app for your phones (both iPhone and android). Go to the App Store on your phone, search for SchoolAppsNZ, click on 'Open' when you see the logo then start to type in 'Pasadena Intermediate' and select our school name. After that you can choose what group alerts you want to receive on your phone, as well as being able to let us know about student absences, seeing our latest newsletters, weekly updates, daily notices, student-led conference bookings, accessing the school calendar, sports events, etc. Please note, as with the nature of an App, this is still in development mode and we are aware that there might be glitches. Please let us know if there are any errors or can think of improvements. A couple of the buttons are still under construction so you may find them empty at this point in time.

If you would like to download an enrolment form please go to www.pasadena.school.nz or alternatively if you would like a tour of the school please email Jonathan the Principal on [email protected] . There will also be a Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 22nd August at 6.30pm in the Pasadena Centre. This will be a presentation by the Senior Management and students regarding what the school programmes and organisation will look like for 2019.

School Cross Country Next week, Pasadena Intermediate will be holding its annual Cross Country run. This event will be held on Thursday 9th August and the first group of runners will start at approximately 1:50pm. This is a compulsory event and if your child is unable to run/walk it next Thursday please either write a signed note or ring your child’s teacher personally. Please ensure they have their P.E gear in their bags ready for next Thursday afternoon. Parents are most welcome to come along and support their child(ren). I am also looking for any parents who can help with marshalling during this time. If you are able to assist please notify Ms Hudson (Kirsten) via email: [email protected] Here is a map and distance of the route:

Hiroshima Exchange The Japanese students from Nagisa Junior High School in Hiroshima arrived last week and have had a busy time both at school and with their Homestay families. This is a great experience for everyone involved.

The Hiroshima Exchange Our time in Hiroshima was truly extraordinary, we learnt so much about Japan and its people. We also now know more about the devastating effects that nuclear weapons can have. Some highlights of this trip were: karaoke, making fake food, the Peace Park, Disneyland and flower arranging, we also really enjoyed learning about the Japanese culture through the tea ceremony. It was very interesting to get a close up look on how different people in different countries get on with regular day to day life. There were a few obstacles such as missing family and communication issues but they only made the experience more exciting! Also, they made great stories to tell at school and to our families! I think everyone who participated can agree that it was an amazing experience and we all learnt so much, both in and out of the classroom, had so many new and delicious foods, made so many friends we will remember forever and had an overall great time! Since the Nagisa students arrived in NZ, they have been continuously wowed by the culture and hospitality of the New Zealand homestay families and the school. They have certainly experienced the best of New Zealand, and still have lots planned! By Saskia and Amelia Rm 5

Homework Club Homework Club starts again this week. This is a great opportunity for students to work on their homework or classwork with the support of teachers. It runs from 3pm to 4pm on Thursdays. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the permission form which came home last week and return it to the office. Spare copies are available through the office.

Gifted and Talented This term’s Gifted and Talented programmes continue including Mathematics, Writing, Science, Art, Technology, Physical Education, Drones, Music, Kitchen Cultivators and Te Reo Māori. Students will have the opportunity to join these in the next week.

Creative Classroom Hub Outdoor Students have been busy creating an outdoor space for classes to use. It is a work in progress. Students will be building seating in technology. Feel free to pop in and have a look. Sue Elliott

Kapa Haka Fundraiser The Kapa Haka group have been working hard this year on their performances and are working towards participating in a competition later this term. In preparation for this we are fundraising for the Kapa Haka group to get new costumes. We will be selling Hāngì packs including pork, chicken, cabbage, pumpkin, kumara and stuffing. These will be sold at school on Friday 17th August at a cost of $13 each which includes fried bread. Steam puddings and custard will also be available at $3. They can be eaten at school for lunch or taken home later in the day. Order forms are available through the school office. We really appreciate your support.

Tricks and Flips

At Tricks and flips, we offer fun and affordable tumbling classes for kids. We teach to all age groups and abilities so whether you're a pro gymnast, trampoline enthusiast or just wanting to give it a go, we can provide a great class for you.

Children will get the chance to learn handstands, cartwheels, walkovers, handsprings, back/front flips etc. The great thing is, no experience is necessary and we will teach you everything you need to know.

We train on a huge inflatable tumble track. This equipment allows for a bouncier surface with softer landings. The tumble track is an essential tool used to teach children to safely progress in their tumbling. Through this class children will gain the confidence to believe in themselves and achieve their goals.

The cost for this term is $100
