Already it has been a very busy term with our sister school from Nagisa Junior High School in Hiroshima and a group of Korean students from Hongseong County visiting our school. Both groups have been welcomed into in our school with wonderful and stirring Powhiri. A big thank you to Donovan Farnham our Rumaki Teacher for facilitating the ceremony. I know both groups of visitors enjoyed the unique experience and learnt a lot about Māori culture. School App Pasadena is introducing a new app for your phones (both iPhone and android). Go to the App Store on your phone, search for SchoolAppsNZ, click on 'Open' when you see the logo then start to type in 'Pasadena Intermediate' and select our school name. After that you can choose what group alerts you want to receive on your phone, as well as being able to let us know about student absences, seeing our latest newsletters, weekly updates, daily notices, student-led conference bookings, accessing the school calendar, sports events, etc. Please note, as with the nature of an App, this is still in development mode and we are aware that there might be glitches. Please let us know if there are any errors or can think of improvements. A couple of the buttons are still under construction so you may find them empty at this point in time. 2019 Enrolments We are currently taking 2019 enrolments. This is a great experience for everyone involved. The Hiroshima Exchange Our time in Hiroshima was truly extraordinary, we learnt so much about Japan and its people. We also now know more about the devastating effects that nuclear weapons can have. Some highlights of this trip were: karaoke, making fake food, the Peace Park, Disneyland and flower arranging, we also really enjoyed learning about the Japanese culture through the tea ceremony. It was very interesting to get a close up look on how different people in different countries get on with regular day to day life. There were a few obstacles such as missing family and communication issues but they only made the experience more exciting! Also, they made great stories to tell at school and to our families! I think everyone who participated can agree that it was an amazing experience and we all learnt so much, both in and out of the classroom, had so many new and delicious foods, made so many friends we will remember forever and had an overall great time! Since the Nagisa students arrived in NZ, they have been continuously wowed by the culture and hospitality of the New Zealand homestay families and the school. They have certainly experienced the best of New Zealand, and still have lots planned! By Saskia and Amelia Rm 5 Homework Club Homework Club starts again this week. This is a great opportunity for students to work on their homework or classwork with the support of teachers. It runs from 3pm to 4pm on Thursdays. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the permission form which came home last week and return it to the office. Spare copies are available through the office. Gifted and Talented This term’s Gifted and Talented programmes continue including Mathematics, Writing, Science, Art, Technology, Physical Education, Drones, Music, Kitchen Cultivators and Te Reo Māori. Students will have the opportunity to join these in the next week. Creative Classroom Hub Outdoor Students have been busy creating an outdoor space for classes to use. It is a work in progress. Students will be building seating in technology. Feel free to pop in and have a look. Sue Elliott Kapa Haka Fundraiser The Kapa Haka group have been working hard this year on their performances and are working towards participating in a competition later this term. In preparation for this we are fundraising for the Kapa Haka group to get new costumes. We will be selling Hāngì packs including pork, chicken, cabbage, pumpkin, kumara and stuffing. These will be sold at school on Friday 17th August at a cost of $13 each which includes fried bread. Steam puddings and custard will also be available at $3.
