Greetings from Graham

Dear Friends,

Lent For many people, taking part in a Lent group is a great way to prepare for Easter. If you’ve never been to one before, why not try one this year? There are 3 parallel opportunities to gather and prepare ourselves for the celebrations of Easter by thinking a little more deeply about what it all means. See page 11 for more details.

Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is an annual reminder of the fragility of our life and the need to return to God. It marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. It is an opportunity to reflect on our lives and commit ourselves to God again as we begin this season of self-denial and prayer. There will also be the opportunity to receive ashes on our foreheads as a mark of our commitment, if we so wish. This year the service will take place at Bourton at 6.30 pm on 6th March, in the context of the beautiful service of Choral Evensong. Do come and join us.

Electoral Roll The church’s electoral roll is the list of those who are members of the church. Every six years, this list is revised, and 2019 is the 6th year since the last revision. This means that everyone who wishes to be a member of their local church/parish needs to complete a form. You will need to be on the roll to take part in the Annual Meeting on 29th April. This is the meeting at which the various people and committees are elected to manage the work of the church over the next year. More details about this meeting will appear next month. You will find Electoral Roll application forms at the back of each church. They should be returned to Mrs E. Hames, Street Farm Court, Kilmington, BA12 6RW, or dropped into the Rectory. [See also page 14].

And finally… Three sons left home, went out on their own and did rather well. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother. The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Rolls Royce with a chauffeur." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beaten. You remember how much Mum enjoyed reading the Bible? Now she can’t see well enough to read it. I sent her a parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took 12 years to teach him. He’s one of a kind. Mum just has to name the verse, and the parrot recites it." Soon thereafter, Mum sent out her letters of thanks. To the first son: "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I still have to clean the whole house." To the second: "I am too old to travel. I stay in most of the time, so I rarely use the Rolls. And the driver is so rude!" To the third son: "Dearest Donald, you have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious."

Your friend in Christ, Graham Revd Graham Perryman 3

Green Fingers : March Notes from the not so green fingered NARCISSUS or DAFFODILS After a dreary winter, there are few more cheerful spring sights than a bright, colourful display of daffodils. Narcissus is a genus of predominately spring perennial plants of the Amaryllidaceae family. Various common names including Daffodil, Daffadowndilly, Lent Lilly and Jonquil are used to describe all or some members of the genus. Daffodils are divided into 13 divisions based mainly on flower form. The bulbs are best planted in the autumn from September until November and they typically flower from February until early May although I have one variety "Rijnvelds early sensation" which was in flower in my garden at Christmas. Daffodils are mostly fully hardy, easy to grow, happy on any soil and will thrive in sun or light shade. It is important that once the flowers have faded you should deadhead them but leave the foliage to die naturally as this feeds the bulbs underground for next year's display. Stourhead have a wonderful display of the pseudo or wild Narcissus as do Cley Hill in Warminster and Fontmell and Melbury downs near Shaftesbury. Pippa Schofield

Defibrillators Following the piece in last month’s magazine, it is important to point out that

Bourton also have a defibrillator, which is located at Bourton Garage

News from Stourhead

As March arrives it signifies a new year in the National Trust calendar. It’s the start of the main season as properties have historically thrown open their doors at this time to once again welcome visitors. At Stourhead we are open year round, but we do re-open the doors to the showrooms of the house on 16 March this year, so for all the staff and volunteers that work at Stourhead, this is a big date.

In the garden, the early spring bulbs, and thousands of daffodils that have been planted over recent years are starting to give way to the later blooms of the rhododendrons. The garden is such a draw for visitors in autumn, and it is just as special in spring, yet seemingly less visited. This year, we are encouraging visitors to come along and soak up the sights and smells of the garden in the springtime.

A quick walk around the garden often isn’t enough to allow you to relax and take in the azalea and rhododendron blossoms ruffling in the breeze wherever the eye lands. The colours on offer in the garden during spring also offer a feast for the senses, with jubilant tones of buttery yellows, purples and every imaginable shade of pink.

Our programme for the year launches in March, and we will be focussing on sharing the stories and skills of the craftsman, artists, builders and gardeners who worked for the Hoare family to create the vision you see today. We are fortunate to have some wonderful items within the collection, from Rysbrack statues, to Thomas Chippendale the Younger furniture, and we are looking forward to sharing the stories of these artisans with our visitors in the coming year.

We hope that you come and see the property soon, and hope that you have a lovely time with us. Why not take a look at our website for a list of all the events and activities taking place throughout the year?

If you are keen to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, we have lots of volunteering opportunities across the property. Please do contact me. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

Betty Chapple The parish was greatly saddened by the news of the death of Betty Chapple. Betty, who died on 2nd February, recently celebrated her 90th birthday. She had been ill for quite some time, but was always determined to keep going as best as she could. She and her husband Dennis have lived at Church Lawn opposite St Peter’s Church since 1962. Betty had her shop and was Postmistress for 26 years. Betty and Dennis were active members of St Peter’s and did so much for the everyday requirements of the Church; no job was too much. Betty will be very much missed and our thoughts and prayers are with Dennis and the family. Jane Parker Lent There are 3 parallel opportunities to gather and prepare ourselves for the celebrations of Easter by thinking a little more deeply about what it all means.

Margaret Martin will lead a group looking at the Christ in the Wilderness paintings by Sir Stanley Spencer. Spencer is well known for his paintings depicting Biblical scenes occurring as if in Cookham, a small village beside the River Thames, where he was born and spent much of his life. The paintings are particularly appropriate for Lent. Discussion will arise from the paintings and will include the biblical basis for each painting and its relevance to us today. The group starts on Thursday March 7th, at 10am, and will be held at Margaret’s home, Randall’s Barn in Bourton. This will be a small group, so please contact Margaret as soon as possible to book a place (01747 840433).

On Friday mornings at 11am, and repeated at 7pm both in Zeals Church, I will lead a meditation based on the oratorio ‘Crucifixion’, by John Stainer. This much-loved piece tells the story of the last few days of Jesus’ earthly life, using choir, soloists and congregational hymns, and is hugely though-provoking. Come and join me as we ponder the mystery of this event, and what it might mean for us in 2019. Starting Friday 8th March,

On Monday afternoons, Rev. Kirsty Wells & Caroline Worthington are leading a course about Mission in all its aspects: how can we be better at looking outwards, rather than looking inwards? This will be held at Caroline’s home, Woodbine Cottage, Brickyard Lane, Bourton SP8 5PJ on Monday afternoons, 2-4pm, starting on Monday 11th March.

I hope you will be able to join us at one or more of these groups. Graham Perryman

Mothering Sunday Posies St George’s Flower Team will be posy-making on Saturday 30th March from 10am-12 noon. We would welcome any volunteers to assist – no age limit! Kilmington There are several items being worked on by the Parish Council as this issue goes to print and these will be reported fully in the April magazine. However, one such item is the public footpath KIL16 which was briefly mentioned in last month’s report. The Clerk has uncovered some additional information from the old files and those relating to the original planning application for the change of use of the land. These go back to 1983-84 when the land was still owned by the National Trust and there are several references to the “public footpath which crosses the site”. This new information has been passed on to the Rights of Way Warden and the Mapping team at Wiltshire Council who are further investigating. The next meeting of the PC is scheduled to take place on Thursday 7 March at 7.30pm at Whitesheet CE Primary Academy School; all are welcome to attend. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper We are sorry that the roads out of Gasper and some Stourton lanes were not gritted during the spell of snowy weather last month. Unfortunately the salt spreader, which is owned by Wiltshire Council and kept at Stourhead for National Trust use, was broken; we were aware of this and despite the Clerk’s best efforts to get the repair done, it has taken help from Cllr George Jeans to finally get the new parts delivered. Hopefully if any more bad weather arrives, there will not be any problems gritting the roads as per our Snow Plan. …../continued on page 17

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Thursday 14 March at 6.30 pm in the Memorial Hall, Stourton and all are welcome to attend. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Zeals As we have not had a formal meeting of the Parish Council since the last edition of the magazine, news from Zeals is less substantial this time. However, residents from all our villages need to be aware of two sets of roadworks planned by Wiltshire Council and Highways operating more or less over the same period but in two separate locations. Both organisations have already apologised in advance for any disruptions which may occur whilst essential maintenance and improvement tasks are carried out. Highways England plan to begin resurfacing the A303 Mere to Zeals westbound with closures of the road overnight. Work should start on the evening of 25 February until 5 March, with closures from 8pm to 6am on weekday evenings. Local traffic will be diverted through Mere. The Zeals westbound exit sliproad will be closed during the daytime of Tuesday 6 March. The second phase from he 6 of March to the 20 March will see overnight closure of the A303 from Zeals to Tinkers Hill. Traffic will then be taken through Zeals and Bourton via New Road to rejoin the A303 at Tinkers Hill. Wiltshire Council's contractors will also be working in the area during part of this period from 6 March until 14 March, with temporary closures for repair work during the day from 9.00 am until 3.00pm as the repair work moves along the B3092 from its junction with the B3095 all the way to Maiden Bradley in a series of stages. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses, although delays are possible due to the nature of the works. Highways England can be contacted for further information on 0300 123 5000, and Eurovia (Wilts contractors) on 07834 503477. More detailed sheets are posted on the village noticeboards. The next meeting of the Parish Council is planned for the evening of 21 March. Graham Edgar: Clerk to Zeals Parish Council

Country Calendar: March 2019

Sprigs of blossom, Prancing lambs, Reeling hares, Iridescent bluebells, Nature awakes Glorious Spring

We certainly could do with a glorious spring, and with the grass growing, warmer weather and light refreshing rain, I am probably tempting fate! The sheep are getting ready to lamb and the cows’ senses are heightened at the thought of spring grass and turnout. I usually look forward to turning the cows out, but over the last couple of years we seem to hear more about people being hurt or even killed by cows - a farmer’s worst nightmare. What I am going to relate to you is shocking but typical of the mentality of some of the ever increasing public at large. The herd was calmly laid down enjoying their midday rest in Sixwells Valley, a very pastoral scene. From the vantage point on my horse, approaching the herd was a single male of early retirement age. On reaching the cows he produced an orange plastic carrier bag, then promptly proceeded to wave it around. Shaking it violently at the cows, in their faces on the top of their heads coupled with making an objectional noise in an attempt to make the animals move. I could not believe what I was witnessing and I quickly approached him and asked him to stop, but he continued, so I shouted at him “Do you want to die, because if you continue behaving like an idiot, I can guarantee you are going to get seriously hurt or even killed?” Oblivious to my remonstrations he still continued. Unbeknown to him the bull was his next victim. As he swiped the bag across his head the animal rose and towered, magnificently dwarfing into insignificance this feeble-minded excuse for a human being, who moved quicker than a rat off a sinking ship, straight out of the middle of the herd to safer ground. Trying to educate this person of the danger into which he was putting himself, and probably others, was to no avail as he arrogantly told me it was a public right of way, and he had every right to move these animals out of his way. My protestations that he was extremely lucky that I had arrived when I did, fell on deaf ears. The bull was uneasy and understandably feeling threatened by his behaviour. Any bull’s natural instinct in such circumstances, would be to protect his females and their young. There was no reasoning, as far as this person was concerned; he was in the right. If there had been an incident, and thank goodness there was not, who would be at fault? This is not the first time we have witnessed people behaving irresponsibly around cattle, and across all ages. A young mother with two very young children was caught in the act of hitting the cattle with a stick as they stood at the water trough. When approached her excuse was that they should get out of her way and she was not prepared to walk round them. It beggars belief. We always recommend that, if you are near cattle, you should give them a wide berth and respect their space, and if nervous about cows walk somewhere else! Cows are fine if treated with respect. Do not get in their space. Walk round them not through them. All animals are unpredictable, a cow is no different. These are just two incidents, but we have seen many more, and goodness knows what else has happened unbeknown to us. Then you wonder why we are hearing more reports of serious incidents with cattle. Bourton Cub Pack Last month Bourton cubs had a change of venue from the usual Bourton village hall to Zeals church for the evening. We had 17 cubs joining in the fun-packed night we all had with the Rev Graham Perryman, with a tour of the church and how things are done. It was very interesting & informative. We all would like to say a big thank you again for having us. Also we wish you a very happy retirement and we will miss you very much as you have done so much for us over the years! Sue Maidment
