  • Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the Differences Between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas
Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the differences between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas This document should be read in conjunction with the School Places Strategy 2017 – 2022 and provides an explanation of the differences between the Wiltshire Community Areas served by the Area Boards and the School Planning Areas. The Strategy is primarily a school place planning tool which, by necessity, is written from the perspective of the School Planning Areas. A School Planning Area (SPA) is defined as the area(s) served by a Secondary School and therefore includes all primary schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into that secondary school. As these areas can differ from the community areas, this addendum is a reference tool to aid interested parties from the Community Area/Area Board to define which SPA includes the schools covered by their Community Area. It is therefore written from the Community Area standpoint. Amesbury The Amesbury Community Area and Area Board covers Amesbury town and surrounding parishes of Tilshead, Orcheston, Shrewton, Figheldean, Netheravon, Enford, Durrington (including Larkhill), Milston, Bulford, Cholderton, Wilsford & Lake, The Woodfords and Great Durnford. It encompasses the secondary schools The Stonehenge School in Amesbury and Avon Valley College in Durrington and includes primary schools which feed into secondary provision in the Community Areas of Durrington, Lavington and Salisbury. However, the School Planning Area (SPA) is based on the area(s) served by the Secondary Schools and covers schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into either The Stonehenge School in Amesbury or Avon Valley College in Durrington.

  • Sutton Veny Best Kept Villages
Sutton Veny Best Kept Villages Villages clean up at contest The finalists of the Best Kept Village in west Wiltshire have been named. Bratton came top in the large village section, beating Atworth, Bowerhill, Holt and North Bradley, while Sutton Veny was judged the best medium village, finishing ahead of Edington, Horningsham, Shaw and Whitely. Best small village is Chitterne, which saw off competition from Beanacre, Bishopstrow and Boreham, Brokerswood, Coulston and Great Hinton. Chairman of Chitterne Parish Council, Jeremy Reid said: "We are absolutely delighted. The people who work voluntarily are the ones who made it possible." Chitterne was the only village of the three not to have received the same accolade two years running. The last time they won was in 1997. Cllr Reid said: "We listened to the judges last time and we have made some improvements. "We changed the position of the notice board and we did restoration work on the recreation ground." The three winners will now go through to the county final, which will be judged later this summer. Chairman of Sutton Veny Parish Council, Tony Henthorne said: "We have a core group of people who have helped and they did a sterling job of cleaning the village and making it tidy. "We are looking forward to the next round of the competition and hopefully we will have better luck than we did last year." Clerk of Bratton Parish Council, Anita Whittle said: "We are very pleased. Everyone is delighted. "Special thanks must go to the village handyman, Bob Jordan who has been tidying all the village lanes.

  • Press Release 8Th August 2014
Press Release 8th August 2014 The Hills Group CPRE Wiltshire Best Kept Village Competition 2014 This judging of this year’s Hills Group CPRE Wiltshire Best Kept Village Competition, sponsored by the Hills Group, is now complete. The First Round of the competition saw the expert judging teams from the Wiltshire Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England putting each village under the microscope. 51 villages throughout the county were tested against the competition criteria which look for tidiness, cleanliness, presentation and village community spirit. The parish councils and their volunteers had clearly been hard at work, achieving encouragingly high standards and making the judges’ task that much more difficult. Each village is judged within the categories of ‘Small’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Large’ and in the First Round they are only judged within their own district: West Wiltshire, North Wiltshire, South Wiltshire, Kennet and Swindon Borough. The winning villages in each district were then judged against each other in the County Round, using fresh judging teams including individual judges from Wiltshire Council. The final results were: Large Village Medium Village Small Village 1st Blunsdon 1st Mildenhall 1st Stapleford 2nd Whiteparish 2nd Liddington 2nd Charlton 3rd Holt 3rd Biddestone 3rd = Bishopstrow 4th Box 4th = Maiden Bradley Rushall 5th Aldbourne Sutton Veny A quote from one of the judging teams reflects just how high the standard of this year’s competition was: “The overall standard of the villages was very good, and deciding on a winner was very difficult, only 6 points separated all the villages and the majority of category scores were 5 or 6 (better than good)” Each winning village will be presented with, and keep, an eight foot standard with mounted shield for a year emplaced on their village green.

  • Wiltshire Yews an Inventory of Churchyard Yews Along the Nadder Valley
Wiltshire Yews An Inventory of Churchyard Yews Along the Nadder Valley. By Peter Norton 1 Introduction: This report is the third of five observations of churchyard Yews in and around the rivers Wylye, Ebble, Nadder and Bourne that converge with the Wiltshire / Hampshire Avon as it flows through the Salisbury area. The River Nadder is the most substantial of the Avon tributaries, rising around Donhead St Mary and Charlton within the Vale of Wardour and then flowing through some of the prettiest countryside in southern England, twisting and turning amongst the peaceful Wiltshire sheep meadows. During the course of its 22 miles the Nadder grows in size until it flows through Wilton House grounds where a fine Palladian Bridge straddles the river. Just outside of the grounds the Nadder and Wylye converge at Quidhampton. The Wylye then loses its identity and the Nadder flows its last few miles before converging with the Avon near to Salisbury Cathedral Close. All of the towns and villages along this route were included, with thirty four churchyards visited. Of these twenty five contained yews, and although many of those mentioned are small in stature compared to some of the veterans already recorded within the Yew Gazetteer, it was felt that, as time progresses, these younger trees will become our future giants for the next generations of yew enthusiasts. A total of one hundred and twenty nine trees were noted at these sites of which forty five had measurements recorded. (See graph below which has been grouped by girth and does not include any estimated* values.) Imperial measurements were taken during the recording exercise but converted to metric.
