Historical Books of the Bible
Historical Books of the Bible Prepared by Elaine Cooney Lesson Overview Lesson Details This is one of the most popular units of the year Subject area(s): Religion, Sacred Scripture for most students. We use the Breakthrough Bible extensively, and use the DVD of music Grade Level: High School, Middle School from The Story by Nichole Nordeman to reveal what these stories mean to us. A worksheet of Resource Type: Close Reading/Reflection, directions and progress checking is given. Game/Contest/Activity, Video (attached). Should be able to cover two historical books/day. After copying the Special Learners "headlines" explain the story headlines in narrative form. Follow this by playing the track This resource was developed with the following that goes with the book. For example, after special learners in mind: talking about Joshua and the Walls of Jericho, watch the Music DVD "Take Me Home" Traditional Classroom (Joshua) , and have students make notes on their prayer cards about the main message of Standards Connection the song. They absolutely love these and the music DVD is amazing! The teacher who prepared this lesson determined that this lesson meets the following After all the cards are completed, we play standards: charades. I pull a random headline out of a box, and two students are responsible for acting out ccss.ela-literacy.rl.8.1 that headline without using words. The rest of the class tries to guess (using their own cards for reference) which headline is being acted, what characters are involved, and what book of the Bible the story comes from. -
“Canon” Or “Canonicity” in Christianity Refers to a Collection of Many Books Acknowledged Or Recognized by the Early Church As Inspired by God
Canonicity Introduction The term “canon” or “canonicity” in Christianity refers to a collection of many books acknowledged or recognized by the early church as inspired by God. Both Jews and Christians possess canons of Scripture. We must remember that the first Christians did not possess a New Testament canon but rather they relied on the gospel that was being proclaimed to them by the apostles and others. They also relied on the books of the Old Testament canon. The Jewish canon consists of thirty-nine books while on the other hand the Christian canon consists of sixty-six for Protestants and seventy-three for Catholics. The Protestant canon has thirty- nine Old Testament books like the Jews and twenty-seven works compose the New Testament. The subject of canonicity is an extremely important subject for the Christian to grasp since it answers the question as to why certain books found their way into the Bible and why others did not. It answers the question as to whether or not the church determined what was in the Bible and what would not be included. Did the church determine which books got into the Bible or did the church merely recognize that certain Christian literary works were inspired and others were not? This article seeks to answer this important question. The subject of canonicity also answers the question as to whether or not certain criteria was employed by the church to determine which books were inspired by God and which were not. If there was certain criteria employed, then what tests did the church use to identify certain works as inspired and those which were not. -

As noted by Fewell (1987:77), the very choice of a research topic is influenced by subjective factors. Until October 2008, mourning in the Bible and the ways in which people deal with bereavement had never been one of my particular fields of interest and my various plans for scholarly research did not include that topic. Then, on October 4, 2008, the Sabbath of Penitence (the Sabbath before the Day of Atonement), my beloved father succumbed to cancer. When we returned home after the funeral, close family friends brought us the first meal that we mourners ate in our new status, in accordance with Jewish custom, as my mother, my three brothers, my father’s sisters, and I began “sitting shivah”—observing the week of mourning and receiving the comforters who visited my parent’s house. The shivah for my father’s death was abbreviated to only three full days, rather than the customary week, also in keeping with custom, because Yom Kippur, which fell only four days after my father’s death, truncated the initial period of mourning. Before my bereavement I had always imagined that sitting shivah and conversing with those who came to console me, when I was so deep in my grief, would be more than I could bear emotionally and thought that I would prefer for people to leave me alone, alone with my pain. -

Judaism Torah: Covenant and Constitution Torah: Covenant and Constitution Summary: The Torah, the central Jewish scripture, provides Judaism with its history, theology, and a framework for ethics and practice. Torah technically refers to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). However, it colloquially refers to all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible, also called the Tanakh. Torah is the one Hebrew word that may provide the best lens into the Jewish tradition. Meaning literally “instruction” or “guidebook,” the Torah is the central text of Judaism. It refers specifically to the first five books of the Bible called the Pentateuch, traditionally thought to be penned by the early Hebrew prophet Moses. More generally, however, torah (no capitalization) is often used to refer to all of Jewish sacred literature, learning, and law. It is the Jewish way. According to the Jewish rabbinic tradition, the Torah is God’s blueprint for the creation of the universe. As such, all knowledge and wisdom is contained within it. One need only “turn it and turn it,” as the rabbis say in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) 5:25, to reveal its unending truth. Another classical rabbinic image of the Torah, taken from the Book of Proverbs 3:18, is that of a nourishing “tree of life,” a support and a salve to those who hold fast to it. Others speak of Torah as the expression of the covenant (brit) given by God to the Jewish people. Practically, Torah is the constitution of the Jewish people, the historical record of origins and the basic legal document passed down from the ancient Israelites to the present day. -
The Textual Basis of Modern Translations of the Hebrew Bible
CHAPTER EIGHT THE TEXTUAL BASIS OF MODERN TRANSLATIONS OF THE HEBREW BIBLE One is led to believe that two distinct types of modern translation of the Hebrew Bible exist: scholarly translations included in critical commentaries, and translations prepared for believing communities, Christian and Jewish. In practice, however, the two types of translation are now rather similar in outlook and their features need to be scrutinized. Scholarly translations included in most critical commentaries are eclectic, that is, their point of departure is MT, but they also draw much on all other textual sources and include emendations when the known textual sources do not yield a satisfactory reading. In a way, these translations present critical editions of the Hebrew Bible, since they reflect the critical selection process of the available textual evidence. These translations claim to reflect the Urtext of the biblical books, even if this term is usually not used explicitly in the description of the translation. The only difference between these translations and a critical edition of the texts in the original languages is that they are worded in a modern language and usually lack a critical apparatus defending the text-critical choices. The publication of these eclectic scholarly translations reflects a remarkable development. While there is virtually no existing reconstruction of the Urtext of the complete Bible in Hebrew (although the original text of several individual books and chapters has been reconstructed),1 such reconstructions do exist in translation.
