Mycosphere 6(3), 290–326, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/6/3/7 Abstract The Dothideomycetes include several genera whose ascomata can be considered as apothecia and thus would be grouped as discomycetes. Most genera are grouped in the family Patellariaceae, but also Agrynnaceae and other families. The Hysteriales include genera having hysterioid ascomata and can be confused with species in Patellariaceae with discoid apothecia if the opening is wide enough. In this study, genera of the family Patellariaceae were re-examined and characterized based on morphological examination. As a result of this study the genera Baggea, Endotryblidium, Holmiella, Hysteropatella, Lecanidiella, Lirellodisca, Murangium, Patellaria, Poetschia, Rhizodiscina, Schrakia, Stratisporella and Tryblidaria are retained in the family Patellariaceae. The genera Banhegyia, Pseudoparodia and Rhytidhysteron are excluded because of differing morphology and/or molecular data. -
Foliicolous Lichens and Their Lichenicolous Fungi Collected During the Smithsonian International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana 1996
45 Tropical Bryology 15: 45-76, 1998 Foliicolous lichens and their lichenicolous fungi collected during the Smithsonian International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana 1996 Robert Lücking Lehrstuhl für Pflanzensystematik, Universität Bayreuth, D-95447 Bayreuth, Germany Abstract: A total of 233 foliicolous lichen species and 18 lichenicolous fungi are reported from Guyana as a result of the Smithsonian „International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana“ 1996. Three lichens and two lichenicolous fungi are new to science: Arthonia grubei sp.n., Badimia subelegans sp.n., Calopadia pauciseptata sp.n., Opegrapha matzeri sp.n. (lichenicolous on Amazonomyces sprucei), and Pyrenidium santessonii sp.n. (lichenicolous on Bacidia psychotriae). The new combination Strigula janeirensis (Bas.: Phylloporina janeirensis; syn.: Raciborskiella janeirensis) is proposed. Apart from Amazonomyces sprucei and Bacidia psychotriae, Arthonia lecythidicola (with the lichenicolous A. pseudopegraphina) and Byssolecania deplanata (with the lichenicolous Opegrapha cf. kalbii) are reported as new hosts for lichenicolous fungi. Arthonia pseudopegraphina growing on A. lecythidicola is the first known case of adelphoparasitism at generic level in foliicolous Arthonia. Arthonia flavoverrucosa, Badimia polillensis, and Byssoloma vezdanum are new records for the Neotropics, and 115 species are new for Guyana, resulting in a total of c. 280 genuine foliicolous species reported for that country, while Porina applanata and P. verruculosa are excluded from its flora. The foliicolous lichen flora of Guyana is representative for the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana) and has great affinities with the Amazon region, while the degree of endemism is low. A characteristic species for this area is Amazonomyces sprucei. Species composition is typical of Neotropical lowland to submontane humid forests, with a dominance of the genera Porina, Strigula, and Mazosia. -

A Review of Lichenology in Saint Lucia Including a Lichen Checklist
A REVIEW OF LICHENOLOGY IN SAINT LUCIA INCLUDING A LICHEN CHECKLIST HOWARD F. FOX1 AND MARIA L. CULLEN2 Abstract. The lichenological history of Saint Lucia is reviewed from published literature and catalogues of herbarium specimens. 238 lichens and 2 lichenicolous fungi are reported. Of these 145 species are known only from single localities in Saint Lucia. Important her- barium collections were made by Alexander Evans, Henry and Frederick Imshaug, Dag Øvstedal, Emmanuël Sérusiaux and the authors. Soufrière is the most surveyed botanical district for lichens. Keywords. Aceito em 07/04/1999 RESUMO - (Revisão nomenclatural e taxonômica de liquens foliícolas e respectivos fungos liquenícolas registrados para o Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, por Batista e colaboradores). Foram revisadas as coleções de liquens foliícolas realizadas pelo micologista Augusto Chaves Batista e seus colaboradores no Estado de Pernambuco. O estudo foi desenvolvido em três partes: (I) compilação e revisão nomenclatural dos nomes aplicados por Batista et ai.; (2) revisão taxonômica dos espécimes determinados por Batista et ai. ; (3) identificação dos espécimes também presentes nas coleções, porém não registrados por Batista el ai. As coleções estudadas compreendem 474 exsicatas com I. 130 espécimes identificados por Batista e seu grupo, nas quais esses autores aplicaram 55 nomes genéricos e 159 nomes específicos. A revisão nomenclatural aqui apresentada demonstrou que esses correspondem a 36 nomes genéricos e 101 nomes específicos válidos, mais II nomina dubia. No entanto, a revisão taxonômica desses 1.130 espécimes revelou que apenas 37 espécies em 16 gêneros foram corretamente identificadas, enquanto que os demais nomes representam determinações incorretas. No presente estudo, foram identificados 1.670 espécimes adicionais que não haviam sido registrados por Batista et aI. Como resultado final da pesquisa, foram revisados 2.800 espécimes, os quais atualmente agrupam-se em 37 gêneros e 134 espécies de liquens foliícolas e/ou fungos liquenícolas. -

(lichenized Ascomycota) in eastern North America with a key to North American species of Melaspilea s. lat. Gary B. PERLMUTTER, Shirley C. TUCKER, Eimy RIVAS PLATA, Philippe CLERC and Robert LU¨ CKING Abstract: Recently collected specimens of the crustose lichen Melaspilea demissa from south-eastern USA have been compared with those of Melaspilea spp. previously determined from North America. A review of both the historical and contemporary treatments of this species is provided. A lectotype was selected from the type collection of M. demissa in FH and is here proposed as it best matches incomplete citations in the original treatment. We also discuss the nomenclatural and taxonomic status of the name Opegrapha cymbiformis var. deformis (considered a synonym of M. gibberulosa). North American specimens of M. gibberulosa were found to be misidentifications, as were specimens attributed to M. lentiginosula, M. mesophlebia and M. octomera. We therefore recommend that these species be removed from the North American lichen checklist. We also present a key to North American Melaspilea. Harris New York Botanical Garden Douglas Ladd The Nature Conservancy Supported by the National Science Foundation grant 0206023 INTRODUCTION Well known as a biologically unique region North America, the Ozarks were long neglected from a lichenological standpoint. Systematic surveys and collecting work were initiated in the Missouri portion of the Ozarks in the early1980's, and were subsequently expanded to encompass the entire Ozark ecoregion, including small portions of Kansas and Illinois, and significant portions of Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. These efforts have revealed a surprisingly rich diversity of lichens in the region, including a significant number of undescribed taxa. Despite considerable field work in every county in the region, new records continue to be found at a distressing rate, and we cannot yet state the total diversity of Ozark lichen biota. This draft is a tentative first attempt to provide a comprehensive treatment of the lichens of the Ozarks. Included here are general keys, brief synopses of genera, key to species within each genus with more than one Ozark taxon, and summaries of the Ozark distribution and ecology of each species, sometimes accompanied by more detailed taxonomic descriptions and other comments. As will be immediately evident to the reader, this draft is being rushed into preliminary distribution to be available for testing at the 2005 Tuckerman Lichen Workshop in the Ozarks. Hence a few disclaimers are stressed: this is an uneven treatment, in that some genera have been carefully studied, with detailed species descriptions and ecological profiles, while other groups are still problematical, with more cursory and provisional treatments. -
