3 World Literature in a Poem The Case of Herberto Helder1 Helena C. Buescu It is arguable that, if world literature is also a mode of reading, as David Damrosch states, there may be special cases in which the choice of works to be read and/or to be translated has to be accounted for as a poetic gesture towards a planetary literary awareness. In such instances, the sense of literary estrangement is part of the reading process, and the project of its non- domestication (perhaps a stronger way to draw on Lawrence Venuti’s notion of foreignization) is very much at the centre of the hermeneutical process. In what follows I will be dealing with an interesting case of translation (or some- thing akin to it), from the point of view of a poet. It is not only that it is a poet who translates poems by others. It is also, as we shall see, that he translates them as a poet, that is, as part of his own poetic stance. What is (and what isn’t) a literary translation? That is the question that lies at the heart of this endeavour. As we shall see, it is also a case in which, through translation, cultural diversity and provenance are transformed into a clearly distinguished work: translating is a mode of reading, but it is also a mode of shifting socio- logical and aesthetic functions and procedures. This is why we may be able to say that world literature is not solely a mode of reading, but a mode that deals with the constant invention of reading—by reshaping the centre and the peripheries of literary systems, and by thus proposing ever-changing forms of actually reading texts that seemed to have been already read. -

Starting with Michener's early life experiences in Doylestown (Pennsylvania), the conversation includes his family's poverty, his wanderings across the United States, and his reading at the local public library. The dialogue includes his education at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania), St. Andrews University (Scotland), Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) where he became a social studies teacher, and Harvard (Cambridge, Massachusetts) where he pursued, but did not complete, a Ph.D. in education. Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years. Lontar’s Publications Division, the backbone of the organization, has the significant task of determining which literary works are to be translated so as to reflect Indonesia’s cultural wealth. The Lontar Foundation publishes books under four imprints: Lontar, BTW, Amanah, and Godown. All titles released prior to 2002 (when Godown and Amanah were established) carried the Lontar imprint. Perspektif gender diperlukan untuk menggali persoalan-persoalan tentang ketidakadilan yang menimpa perempuan dalam cerita pendek ”Makkunrai” karya Lily Yulianti Farid. Dalam analisis gender, terdapat kaitan erat antara perbedaan gender (gender differences) dan ketidakadilan gender (gender inequality) dengan struktur ketidakadilan masyarakat secara lebih luas. Analisis gender yang dilakukan, pada umumnya berupaya untuk memahami pokok persoalan ketimpangan relasi gender, yakni pada sistem dan struktur sosial yang tidak adil yang merugikan kaum perempuan. Dalam cerpen yang berjudul Makkunrai (bahasa Bugis = perempuan) karya Lily Yulianti Farid, tokoh Aku yang adalah seorang perempuan merasakan perbedaan perilaku masyarakat (Bugis/Makasar) terhadap kaum laki- laki dan perempuan. Sejak lahir, tokoh Aku harus hidup dalam dominasi laki-laki. Sejak lahir, tokoh Aku sudah tidak dikehendaki oleh keluarga besar, ia adalah perempuan. Peran perempuan berada di bawah kekangan dominasi harta dan kekuasaan, sehingga ia harus menuruti keinginan masyarakat patrilineal di segala bidang, termasuk dalam penentuan teman hidup yang akan dijalaninya sampai mati. Perilaku kakek, yang merelakan istrinya menderita, bahkan harus mati karena menahan perasaan karena tidak mau diduakan, menjadi mercu suar bagi tokoh Aku yang akhirnya memberanikan diri untuk melepaskan diri dari masyarakatnya. Indianapolis First Friends Meeting embarked on this journey over three years ago. We moved from a hope and dream of a program such as this to a reality with a completed period of study when eleven of our youth were affirmed by our Meeting in June 2015. This ten-month program of study and experience was created for our young people to help them explore their spirituality, discover their identity as Quakers and to inform them of Quaker history, faith and practice. While Quakers do not confirm creeds or statements made for them at baptism, etc, we felt it important that young people be informed and af - firmed in their understanding of who they are as Friends. -

Imagining Indian Literature: Towards a Historiography of Translation MRINMOY PRAMANICK Research question what this paper tries to address is the role of translation in imagining nation and national literature in Indian context from a bhasha perspective. This paper argues that a partial history of literary translation can be proposed from the act of imagining national literature in a certain language. Research in this subject concerns on the history of literary translation by the government and non-government publishing houses, academic disciplines and academic activities like seminar, conferences, symposium, workshops etc. as the stepping stones for imagining nation through translation. This paper took quite a few examples of above mentioned literary activities to propose a history of translation as well as the history of Indian literature in a bhasha context. Keywords: Indian literature, nation, national literature, historiography, bangla translation, ecology of translation. ... the major modern Indian languages have developed not only through ‘vertical’ translations from the languages of power and knowledge - English and Sanskrit - but also by engaging in ‘horizontal’ translations of one another, ultimately contributing to the creation of an inherently pluralistic body of literature in India. Imagining Indian Literature in Bangla can be traced back from 19th century with the translation of Indian literary texts from West Indian languages by Jyotindranath Tagore and also with the translation of Rabindranath Tagore’s translations of Indian poetry. This paper traced the history of translation and imagination of National literature from early 20th century as theoretically Indian Literature were assumed to be studied. -
JAMES A. MICHENER Has Published More Than 30 Books
Bowdoin College Commencement 1992 One of America’s leading writers of historical fiction, JAMES A. MICHENER has published more than 30 books. His writing career began with the publication in 1947 of a book of interrelated stories titled Tales of the South Pacific, based upon his experiences in the U.S. Navy where he served on 49 different Pacific islands. The work won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and inspired one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize. Michener’s first book set the course for his career, which would feature works about many cultures with emphasis on the relationships between different peoples and the need to overcome ignorance and prejudice. Random House has published Michener’s works on Japan (Sayonara), Hawaii (Hawaii), Spain (Iberia), Southeast Asia (The Voice of Asia), South Africa (The Covenant) and Poland (Poland), among others. Michener has also written a number of works about the United States, including Centennial, which became a television series, Chesapeake, and Texas. Since 1987, the prolific Michener has written five books, including Alaska and his most recent work, The Novel. His books have been issued in virtually every language in the world. Michener has also been involved in public service, beginning with an unsuccessful 1962 bid for Congress. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an experience which he used to write his 1982 novel Space. This is an observational field-based case study, which focuses upon Sand by Saya, a micro business that designs and assembles sandals in New York City with a worldwide distribution network. Sand by Saya lost its biggest Japanese buyer, Mr. Saito, due to weak sales of its newest product line, a line that was lower priced and poorly manufactured. The case ends with the CEO of the firm contemplating how she managed to get into this predicament, how she might have avoided it, and then what actions should be taken beyond legal retaliation. Part 2 includes a brief teaching note that provides a short description of entrepreneurial marketing, brand extension and product life cycle. Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Program Southeast Asia is home to the largest number of social media users globally. Digital technology is shaping the way Southeast Asians interact, maintain contact, and express who they are, their family relationships. It is also a region known for its mobile population with high numbers of overseas workers, international students, refugees/asylum seekers, and migrants seeking permanent residency or citizenship in other countries. Online multimedia content is one way that migrants and mobile Southeast Asians express their sense of connectedness to their family members, belonging, multiple and varied identities, and cultural backgrounds. This two-day workshop of 13 presentations and 20 participants aims to provide a contemporary understanding of online multimedia expression of identity, belonging, and intergenerational family relationships of migrants and mobile subjects of Southeast Asian descent. What do these online multimedia production and stories tell us about the effects of migration and mobility on family intergenerational relationships, that of children, parents, grandparents, and extended kin networks? By focusing on online multimedia expression of Southeast Asians, we aim to comprehend social and cultural change in this region and beyond, that is shaped by digital technology, and particularly in relation to issues of identity, belonging and family relationships. In addition, we are interested in exploring the nuances of how technology shapes this process of change, including addressing a wider range of issues beyond connectedness such as power, conflict, and kinship relations. -

Logistics UIW-Heidelberg Study Center Physical Address: Heidelberg, Germany - Bergstrasse 106, 69121 II. Course Description Part of the UIW Core Curriculum, this course includes close reading and discussion of texts of all kinds from a wide range of periods and societies to reveal the diversity of literature as a means of cultural statement. This course is designed as a directed exploration of worldwide literary genres and techniques of close study that emphasizes the development of critical reading skills and methodologies of literary analysis, i.e. of what can be said well about a work of art. Close readings of the assigned literary works will help develop our appreciation of literature as finely crafted, multidimensional art. In addition, such readings allow us to examine the connections between literature and culture. In examining these connections, we explore the role of art and the artist in social justice, an important aspect of study at our university. III. Course Objective Having finished this course, students will have a refined background knowledge of world literature, beginning with Ancient Near Eastern texts and ending with 20m century literature. They will develop and practice active reading which gets the reader involved with texts and authors. They will be able to identify various critical approaches and methodologies. Students will develop the skills required to present ideas clearly and effectively about literature in oral and written forms, for instance through a well-crafted paper which conveys a strong thesis with textual backing, demonstrating their ability to do research. -
