INTRODUCTION BYTHE EDITOR HEN Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne- Jones, William Morris, and some fellow-artists painted on the damp walls of the Oxford Un- ion debating hall in 1857, their ignorance of fresco technique led them to produce haunt- ing images of the Middle Ages which, in ghostly fashion, began to fade almost immedi- ately; but the more permanent legacy of this episode was a body of richly revealing anecdotes about the Pre- Raphaelites themselves. Burne-Jones, for example, recalled that Mor- ris was so fanatically precise about the details of medieval costume Figure 1 that he arranged for "a stout little smith" in Oxford to produce a suit of armor which the painters could use as a model. When the basinet arrived, Morris at once tried it on, and Burne-Jones, working high above, looked down and was startled to see his friend "embedded in iron, dancing with rage and roaring inside" because the visor would not lift.1 This picture of Morris imprisoned and blinded by a piece of medie- val armor is an intriguing one: certainly it hints at an interpretation of his career that is not very flattering. But we ought to set alongside it another anecdote, from the last decade of Morris's life, the symbol- ism of which seems equally potent. Early in November 1892, young Sydney Cockerell, recently hired by Morris to catalogue his incunab- ula and medieval manuscripts, spent the entire day immersed in that remote age while studying materials in Morris's library. As evening approached, he emerged again into the nineteenth century (or so he thought) and climbed the staircase of Kelmscott House: "When I went up into the drawing room to say goodnight Morris and his wife were playing at draughts, with large ivory pieces, red and white. -

Steeped in the classical training of an English gentleman, Edward Dodwell (1777/78– 1832) first traveled through Greece in 1801. He returned in 1805 in the company of an Italian artist, Simone Pomardi (1757–1830), and together they toured the country for fourteen months, drawing and documenting the landscape with exacting detail. They produced around a thousand illustrations, most of which are now in the collection of the Packard Humanities Institute in Los Altos, California. A selection from this rich archive is presented here for the first time in the United States. Dodwell and Pomardi frequently used a camera obscura, an optical device that made it easier to create accurate images. Beyond providing evidence for the appearance of monuments and vistas, their illustrations manifest the ideal of the picturesque that enraptured so many European travelers. The sight of ancient temples lying in ruin, or of the Greek people under Turkish rule as part of the Ottoman Empire, prompted meditation on the transience of human accomplishments. As Dodwell himself wrote: “When we contemplated the scene around us, and beheld the sites of ruined states, and kingdoms, and cities, which were once elevated to a high pitch of prosperity and renown, but which have now vanished like a dream . we could not but forcibly feel that nations perish as well as individuals.” Dodwell’s own words accompany the majority of images in this exhibition. His descriptions are drawn from his Classical and Topographical Tour through Greece, during the Years 1801, 1805, and 1806 (London, 1819). The author’s original spelling, capitalization, and punctuation have been retained. -

Little is known about Page’s life, but the freshness of his approach impressed me, as did his evident pleasure in drawing ruins. His relationship with his patron and probable pupil, Mary Hamilton Campbell, Lady Ruthven, an amateur archaeologist who appears to have taken him to Greece, was previously unknown, as was Page’s involvement with her brother William Campbell, with whom he travelled to Turkey. There is more work to be done on Page, but in the meantime I hope this catalogue will add a little to our understanding of the Enlightenment fascination with classical Greece. My own longstanding interest in the Ottoman period remains undimmed, and it has been a pleasure to revisit it. -

Bock has created a first definition of the fungi after the antiquity in 1539. P. Boccone has publised nummerous new fungi in the years 1674 and 1697. Both were progressists for the contemporary knowledge on fungi. You can download the volume you want to your computer, flash drive, etc. We are starting the transcription project with Volume I (1827-1834). Let Mary Warnement ([email protected]) know what page or pages you would like to transcribe so that we do not have volunteers duplicating efforts. Transcribing for Search We are transcribing for search and retrieval rather than for manuscript fidelity. Having searched for and found a page of interest using our transcriptions, a researcher can, if they desire, refer to the scan of the found page for scriptural details. The key to transcribing for search is uniformity across the transcriptions. To achieve this uniformity, we record in this How to Transcribe document guidelines for transcription. This is a working document. When you encounter a situation that is not sufficiently well covered in the document, bring it to the attention of the group for discussion, resolution, and inclusion in an updated version of the document. 1) General Guidelines 1.1) Unless otherwise specified, spell out abbreviations.
