Vision for the Future – Living Within Our Means…

Managing the resources of a faith community is not very different from managing a household budget: often, it comes down to the question How can we provide what our family needs, given the limited resources that we have? In those times when our families have more resources at our disposal, it’s easier to provide those things that our families need and want. But, in those times when resources are scarce, families are often forced to make difficult choices in order to prioritize their spending, in order to ensure that they don’t spend more than they’re able to afford.

Currently, Saint Mark, Saint Michael, and Queen of the Rosary are experiencing lean times. Our operating expenses are greater than our operating income across the board. Each community is struggling to balance their budgets and meet their financial responsibilities as our Grouping prepares to become a new Parish in early 2021.

Over the past few decades, parish registrations, Mass attendance, and offertory contributions have been decreasing or flat. The effect of the grand jury report is being felt at each of our parishes – donations toward the operation of all our parishes have decreased significantly over the past year. As a result, expenses at all our parishes are greater than our income and we need to be aware of the reality of our current financial situation:

At Saint Mark, for every $20.00 that we receive in the collection basket, we are spending $30.72 on Saint Mark expenses and employee compensation.

At Saint Michael, for every $20.00 that we receive in the collection basket, we are spending $20.76 on Saint Michael expenses and employee compensation.

At Queen of the Rosary, for every $20.00 that we receive in the collection basket, we are spending $27.22 on Queen of the Rosary expenses and employee compensation.

In order to keep our Faith Community solvent, we must begin to live within our means.

As we continue to prepare for our future as a Parish Family, I am asking for your prayerful support as we continue looking at the various areas of our budget to live within our means. If you can increase your weekly offering or your Parish Share Pledge, that would increase the operating income and enable us to live within our means.

The Advisory Councils, Pastoral and Finance, are striving to be responsible with respect to the financial limitations of the Elizabeth, Glassport, South Allegheny Grouping. They continue to discuss ideas on the best way to serve the People of God while ensuring that our Faith Community returns to financial solvency.

Please join with the Clergy Team, Advisory Councils and Pastoral Staff as we continue to pray and discover how we will become the Church Alive! in 2021 and beyond.
