These two commandments are the source from which blessings flow for us, and upon them hangs all the Law and the Prophets, as Christ said (Mt. 22:40). Our hearts should burn with love for God and our eyes should be filled with tears of compassion for our brothers, because they are also created after the image and likeness of God, our Creator, and are like us. —Hieromonk Nikodemos of Karyes, Mount Athos, reposed 1986 .

1 Saint Joan Script Glossary Compiled by Richard Rossi Italicized definitions have an accompanying picture Scene I Meuse River: During the time of the play, this roughly North/South river indicated the border between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France. Approximately the red line, with Lorraine as the tan county at the bottom right, and Champagne on the left. Lorraine: The Duchy of Upper Lorraine, ruled by the dynasty of Gérard de Châtenois, was de facto independent from the 10th to 15th centuries. Intersected by the Meuse and Moselle rivers, it had a great deal of trade and information passing through, which made it an enticing target. In 1431, a mere two years after the start of Saint Joan, the Duchy was ceded to the House of Anjou, specifically René I, from whom it was incorporated into France in 1480. Champagne: Under the rule of the Counts of Champagne until 1284, the marriage of Philip the Fair and Joan I of Navarre brought it under the royal domain. During the High Middle Ages (1000-1300), the County of Champagne was one of the most powerful fiefs in France, home to the largest financial and commercial markets in Western Europe. 2 Vaucouleurs Castle: The main defense of “the town that armed Joan of Arc” and the residence of Robert de Baudricourt. The unruined structures, including the gothic chapel on the right, were rebuilt during the 18th century. Robert de Baudricourt: (1400-1454) minor French nobility, the son of the chamberlain of the Duke of Bar (Liebald de Baudricourt).

  • Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue
Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue by Joseph Youssef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Youssef (2019) Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue Joseph Youssef Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Based on 13 months of transnational ethnographic fieldwork between Egypt, Southern California, and Toronto, this dissertation examines questions around exemplarity, morality, and the cultivation of virtue among Coptic Orthodox Christians. Specifically, this thesis investigates the relationship between Coptic monks and the wider Coptic community. Many Copts view monasticism as a morally exemplary way of life. The monk as one who has forsaken all social ties and lives in the desert is regarded as one who has attained the highest form of virtue. This view results in different levels of engagement with monastic practice and competing voices for what it means to be a Coptic Christian. As will be demonstrated through ethnographic details, there is a gap between the ideals of the Coptic monastic imaginary and the lived reality of negotiating Christian virtue for monks and laity alike. Furthermore, this dissertation unpacks the ways in which Coptic monasticism is (re-)imagined and (re-)produced in North America and how Coptic subjectivity is (re-)negotiated in relation to Egypt and the Mother Church. ii Acknowledgments Becoming exemplary is a process as this dissertation will soon show. Whether one strives to be the best monk, Christian, or anthropologist, there are many along the path who are a part of this process, who challenge, encourage, and patiently watch for the individual to grow and formulate their vocation.

  • Shakespeare and Hospitality
Shakespeare and Hospitality This volume focuses on hospitality as a theoretically and historically cru- cial phenomenon in Shakespeare’s work with ramifications for contempo- rary thought and practice. Drawing a multifaceted picture of Shakespeare’s numerous scenes of hospitality—with their depictions of greeting, feeding, entertaining, and sheltering—the collection demonstrates how hospital- ity provides a compelling frame for the core ethical, political, theological, and ecological questions of Shakespeare’s time and our own. By reading Shakespeare’s plays in conjunction with contemporary theory as well as early modern texts and objects—including almanacs, recipe books, hus- bandry manuals, and religious tracts—this book reimagines Shakespeare’s playworld as one charged with the risks of hosting (rape and seduction, war and betrayal, enchantment and disenchantment) and the limits of gen- erosity (how much can or should one give the guest, with what attitude or comportment, and under what circumstances?). This substantial volume maps the terrain of Shakespearean hospitality in its rich complexity, offering key historical, rhetorical, and phenomenological approaches to this diverse subject. David B. “Spanning the history of Christian guidance from the Desert Fathers and Mothers to contemporary expressions in literature and film, this groundbreaking book traces spiritual direction from its roots to its flourishing. Informed and inspired by this first-rate historical analysis, our own ministries as spiritual directors will become blessed by the saints who preceded us.” — Susan S. Phillips, author of Candlelight: Illuminating the Art of Spiritual Direction “Written first as an important contribution to the Catholic tradition of spiritual direction, A Science of the Saints is also designed to be accessible to a more general audience. In this volume, a spiritual director will find many enriching reminders of what kind of person the director should be, the natural and unique unfolding of the spiritual life in each person, and the still-relevant wisdom of a 2000-year-old tradition of companionship designed to assist the human capacity to be enfolded in God.” — Norvene Vest, author of Preferring Christ, a Devotional Commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict A Science of the Saints Studies in Spiritual Direction Edited by Robert E.
