The route across the French Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Med was established in 1950, keeping as close to the Spanish border as possible. It has to be done within 100 hours and traverses many Pyrenean cols made famous by the Tour de France, including the Tourmalet, Aubisque, Col de Portet d’Aspet and the Aspin. Undulating over the Col des Ares (797m) and the Col de Buret (602m) is delightful, especially when compared to the 14% inclines of approaching the Col de Portet d’Aspet (1069m).
