IL BAROLO 2010 SELEZIONE UFFICIALE DELL’ENOTECA REGIONALE DEL BAROLO Nei giorni scorsi, la convocazione del Comitato Tecnico ha dato il via all'ultimo mese di preparativi, assolvendo il complicato ed impegnativo compito di valutare i 20 campioni di Barolo 2010 scelti per l'occasione ed individuare quello più rappresentativo per la “Selezione Ufficiale”, la partita numerata di bottiglie e magnum che verrà "sigillata" con tappo anonimo, "vestita" da un'etichetta artistica ed utilizzata come bottiglia istituzionale negli eventi e nelle manifestazioni dell'Enoteca. Commenta Federico Scarzello, Presidente dell’Enoteca Regionale del Barolo: "Come sempre il la- voro dei nostri tecnici ed esperti degustatori è stato prezioso. Ringraziamo pertanto Giovanni Bres- sano, Gianluca Colombo, Armando Cordero, Luca Faccenda, Giancarlo Germano, Lorenzo Tablino e Gianluca Viberti (in ordine alfabetico), perché con la consueta competenza hanno svolto un ottimo lavoro data la straordinaria qualità dei vini. Si è trattato della prima sessione dopo il rinnovo del Consiglio di Amministrazione del novembre scorso e per l'occasione abbiamo inserito alcune nuove professionalità che hanno interagito molto positivamente e hanno contribuito a confermare il ruolo centrale della Commissione Tecnica non solo nella scelta della Selezione Ufficiale, ma anche nelle degustazioni di ammissione e di controllo della qualità che sono alla base di ogni Enoteca Regiona- le." Archiviata la scelta del Barolo Istituzionale, si procede ora alla definizione dell’etichetta artistica che ne dovrà vestire la bottiglia. Dopo artisti come Beverly Pepper, Park Eun Sun, Mikhail Shemya- kin, Kyoji Nagatani e Joe Tilson, sarà il torinese Ezio Gribaudo a valorizzare con la sua creatività l'immagine dell'ultima annata in commercio e a giudicare dalle bozze visionate fino ad ora il risul- tato sarà decisamente delicato ed evocativo allo stesso tempo. Spiega il Presidente Scarzello: "Proseguendo nella direzione intrapresa da alcuni anni, ecco un al- tro importante personaggio legato al mondo del vino con quella stessa professionalità e quella stessa passione che animano i nostri produttori e che contribuiscono a tenere alto il prestigio e la qualità del Barolo. Dopo il Sommelier Campione del Mondo 2010 Luca Gardini, il wine writer e cri- tico enologico italiano di maggior richiamo nazionale ed internazionale Ian D'Agata e la Regina dei Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, per questa edizione il Barolo respira ancora un clima internaziona- le e si onora di dedicare la sua nuova annata a Monica Larner, giornalista di elevata competenza che si è fatta strada nel settore enologico come corrispondente dall’Italia per il noto magazine sta- tunitense Wine Enthusiast e dallo scorso anno è stata scelta da Robert Parker come corrispondente italiana per la rivista “The Wine Advocate”. A breve verrà reso noto il programma completo della giornata di inaugurazione che prelude alla settimana di degustazione del Barolo 2010 e saranno “svelati” in anteprima non solo i nomi delle aziende che aderiscono all’evento, ma anche le “etichette” con le quali saranno presenti. Conclude il Presidente Scarzello: “Fra pochi giorni scade il termine entro il quale i nostri produttori possono decidere di partecipare, dopodiché elaboreremo i dati ricevuti ed i nominativi delle cantine e le schede dei vini saranno pubblicati prima della presentazione sia sulle nostre pagine Facebook e Twitter, sia nell’apposita sezione creata sul sito www.enotecadelbarolo.it, che ad un anno di vita sta riscuotendo un ottimo successo e conta centinaia di contatti ogni giorno. Dopo aver frequentato il liceo in Italia e in California, consegue la laurea in giornalismo (un Master of the Arts e una laurea breve in studi italiani) rispettivamente presso la Boston University e la New York University. Studentessa impegnata e rispettosa dell’etica del buon giornalismo, inizia la sua carriera lavorando per il quotidiano italiano La Repubblica, poi per 4 anni collabora con la sede romana di Business Week ed infine firma una joint venture con l'International Herald Tribune, per cui scrive fra l’altro il suo primo artico- lo sul vino, e il Corriere della Sera. Monica cresce in un ambiente che ha sempre nutrito un profondo apprezzamento per la cultura del vino: il padre, infatti, ne era innamorato fin da quando era studente di cinema a Parigi e nel 1997 si riti- ra dal lavoro ed acquista un ranch di 134 acri in Ballard Canyon (Santa Barbara, California) per realizzare il sogno di una vita: produrre vino. Monica collabora nella selezione dei cloni e nelle operazioni di conduzio- ne della tenuta, ma nel 2005 Stevan Larner muore tragicamente in un incidente in vigneto ed oggi Michael, fratello di Monica ed enologo, gestisce l'impresa vinicola di famiglia. Solare, curiosa ed eclettica, la Larner diventa molto presto un membro attivo dell’Ordine dei Gior- nalisti e gran parte della sua vita sociale si lega alla comunità della Stampa Estera in Italia. È Sommelier ac- creditato all'Associazione Italiana Sommelier e comincia a viaggiare in ogni angolo della penisola per racco- gliere materiale finalizzato alla pubblicazione di quattro guide. Scrive fra l’altro Living, Studying and Wor- king in Italy (Henry Holt) e In Love in Italy (Rizzoli USA) e crea un archivio fotografico di 50.000 immagini: non c'è città italiana, regione o isola che non abbia descritto o fotografato. Nel 2003, il magazine Wine Enthusiast le affida l’incarico di primo corrispondente con sede in Ita- lia ed il Managing Editor Joe Czerwinski la addestra formalmente ad utilizzare il sistema di valutazione in centesimi. This period of renewal, vigor and innovation was known as the Sicilian Wine Renaissance, and one of its architects, its Michelangelo, was Diego Planeta. His vision became the blueprint for a complete transformation of Sicilian wine. Sicilia is more than a wine appellation. It has become a global brand recognized across the food, travel and lifestyle sectors. Sicilian wine would nd its entry into the world of ne wine thanks to international grapes but would ultimately cement its reputation in that arena thanks to its rich patrimony of indigenous varieties. Indeed, the enormous biodiversity represented by Sicilian wine is its greatest competitive edge. Most importantly, Sicilia would become a ercely united group of like-minded wine producers under the leadership of Diego Planeta and the other two leading architects of the Sicilian Wine Renaissance, Giacomo Rallo (of Donnafugata) and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita. Together, the three men founded Assovini Sicilia, the private vintners’ association that promotes Sicilian wine, and other initiatives that would make wine a cornerstone of the island economy.

First, the winter seemed endless, then the Spring did not want to come and now our Summer is still dealing with Spring. Everything is green after getting so much water in the past three months—we would make it through any drought, which is exactly what the vineyards need. This year’s vintage is about three weeks behind in its growth as we head into the hot and dry weather of June, July and August. What can we do? We keep our fingers crossed and pray for a hot and merciless Summer. We promise, we won’t complain if we have to sweat. By the way, a terrific Summer is also what all other wine regions in Europe need—can you imagine, it snowed in Burgundy on May 26th.     UNDER $25 GREAT WINES Extracted From Rick Brusca’s Wine Database **** RED WINES **** A note about ratings. Although many magazines, web sites, and commercial retailers rate wines, the most influential are probably three magazines: The Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, and The Wine Advocate. The Wine Enthusiast magazine reviews over 1000 wines for each issue; not all are published, but all are available at their web site. Wine Spectator reviews 400-1000 wines per issue (and their wine editors taste about 20,000 wines each year). Both use a traditional 100-point scale, and both use panels of professional wine tasters. Tastings are usually done blind, in flights organized by varietal, appellation, or region, and often begin with a wine previously rated, which is tasted non-blind as a reference point. A typical tasting-session comprises 20 to 30 wines. The Wine Advocate, launched by wine critic Robert M. Parker in 1978, also reviews many wines in each issue. The magazine’s success allowed Parker to quit practicing law in 1984, and to devote himself full-time to wine (we should all be so lucky). In 2012, a majority stake in The Wine Advocate was sold to investors from Singapore, with a plan to go from print+online, to fully on-line; however, this has not happened and the print magazine still exists. The role of Editor-in-Chief went from Parker to Lisa Perotti-Brown, and a second editorial office opened in Singapore. Following lead wine critic Antonio Galloni’s departure from The Wine Advocate in 2013, three new core critics were recruited, Jeb Dunnuck, Monica Larner and Luis Guitérrez.

    Italy, Tuscany: 1971 Tignanello October 30, 2015 http://www.erobertparker.com Some forty years have passed since the first bottle of Tignanello was released in 1974. Piero Antinori, the man who conceived of this landmark red blend published a coffee table biography of his wine to celebrate its birthday. In his book, Tignanello 1971, A Tuscan Story, he writes: "Great wine is the sum of a grapevine and an idea." Piero Antinori had both, in generous supply, when he was charged with heading his family's wine company at the young age of 28. Thanks to a sudden burst of youthful inspiration, Antinori created a wine that would rewrite all the rules for vino Italiano and would bring his country to the enological world stage. The point cannot be exaggerated: Tignanello ushered Italy into the world of modern winemaking. It was nothing short of revolutionary. Tignanello is a wine of significant cultural context. At the end of the 1960's when Piero Antinori took over the Antinori wine dynasty, Italy was in the midst of the dynamic post-World War II reconstruction years known as the Italian Economic Miracle. There was a sense of optimism, hope and a feeling that a new era had started. This prolonged period of economic growth meant that people could buy their first home, car and travel abroad. Industry and manufacturing would spur renewed infrastructure and public works. Sophisticated political discourse and social momentum would lead to enormously creative years for art, literature and cinema. The year 1966 would prove to be a personal turning point for Piero Antinori: He was called to head the family wine company, he got married and he saw the birth of his first daughter Albiera.

He first opened a small store in the very centre of Rome, in Via Sistina and moved several years later to Via Condotti to create the legendary jewels that are appreciated all over the world today using the most precious stones. Many years have gone by, and four generations later Giovanni Bulgari, the son of Paolo, has started a venture in wines, continuing the same quest for excellence and commitment to elegance and beauty as his great, great grandfather had started. The Podernuovo estate was bought in 2004 by Paolo and Giovanni Bulgari and is located in the Southern tip of Tuscany, positioned within a triangle between Umbria and Lazio. The 54 acres of vineyard at Palazzone are part of the municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni, an ancient thermal retreat. The previously abandoned vineyard was completely replanted in 2007 and its South-East exposure imparts the wines its structure and elegance.
