He first opened a small store in the very centre of Rome, in Via Sistina and moved several years later to Via Condotti to create the legendary jewels that are appreciated all over the world today using the most precious stones. Many years have gone by, and four generations later Giovanni Bulgari, the son of Paolo, has started a venture in wines, continuing the same quest for excellence and commitment to elegance and beauty as his great, great grandfather had started. The Podernuovo estate was bought in 2004 by Paolo and Giovanni Bulgari and is located in the Southern tip of Tuscany, positioned within a triangle between Umbria and Lazio. The 54 acres of vineyard at Palazzone are part of the municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni, an ancient thermal retreat. The previously abandoned vineyard was completely replanted in 2007 and its South-East exposure imparts the wines its structure and elegance. The variegated soil goes from clayey and chalky, to sandy and pebbly, an ideal environment, combined with a mild climate: warm summers and relatively cold winters Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone and moderate rainfall. The altitude of the vineyard is of 340 to 380 meters above sea level capitalizing on its natural slight slopes to avoid water stagnation. 3 INT R ODU C TIO N Historical vocaon Centuries ago Podernuovo a Palazzone was a staging post along the branch of the Via Cassia, the important Roman consular road. Subsequently, it became a trading outpost for Castello of Fighine, a middle age castle, which also owned the farming estate of Podernuovo. Today the vineyard lies within an untouched and authentic piece of Tuscany, were the countryside is still farmed in respect of the territories’ environmental balance and its ancient agricultural history. This Region’s vineyards have been tended since the Middle Ages thus creating a special energy and motivation for those who work here to produce excellent wines. Everyone here knows to be part of the region’s history, perpetuating centuries old tradition and craftsmanship, honouring nature as well as their ancestors. “Vocation” is an important concept at Podernuovo a Palazzone, it refers not only to the people who have elected wine- making and tending the land as the main focus of their lives, but also to the land itself, which Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone through the centuries has always been called a noble mission. 4 INT R ODU C TIO N Why the Company was founded The vineyard is a personal project and investment of Paolo and Giovanni Bulgari. They already own other estates in and around Tuscany and have always been passionate about nature in general and wine in particular. In 2004 Paolo and Giovanni discovered Podernuovo, a small village close to Palazzone. They fell in love with this authentic piece of land and decided to purchase the estate and start to produce wine with the following objectives: • To make elegant wines with simplicity • To realize this project with strong content and great passion in a contest of full respect of the environment Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone • To improve the “made in Tuscany” asset 5 OU R O R GANI Z A TIO N Business Culture The company has been established with a long term vision in order to improve the full potential of the terroir for the production of extraordinary wines. Employees and Management are empowered in order to capitalize on each individual talent and commitment with a strong culture of respect for nature and the environment. Management Culture Our Management team combine various business background from Bulgari and from inside the wine industry bringing a global prospective to our company. For further info please refer to Appendix 1. PNAP Headquarter The company operates out of the winery’s headquarter located in the estate. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone 6 OU R O R GANI Z A TIO N Management and Employees The company is managed by Giovanni Bulgari (CEO), Giulio Figarolo di Gropello (CFO and Managing Director) and Francesca Zanoni as board member (Marketing & Communication). Matheus de Carvalho in charge of Sales, Stefania Aggravi in charge of Logistics and Administration, Stefano Piccio as winery master, Giorgio Gigliotti as vineyard master. The above team is coordinating a group of approximately 15 full time employees plus a number of part-time workers. An external oenologist works as a consultant. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone For more details see Appendix 1. 7 OU R P R ODU C T S The winery focus on the producon of three great red wines Therra a Tuscany blend of Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Argirio a Cabernet Franc. Sotirio a Pure Sangiovese. Sotirio, Argirio and Therra are wines that appeal to those who appreciate excellence obtained by combining outstanding vineyards with unparalleled commitment. According to the poet Valentino Zeichen “Wine is the source of all poetry: I believe all classical Greco Roman poetry was produced by wine. Wine suddenly moves us closer to the truth, to knowledge, all the rest is foolishness”. Production target 150.000 bottles. Target will be reached with the 2014 vintage For all details on our products please refer to Appendix 2. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone 8 GRAP E S AN D VINE Y AR D Grape varieties: mainly Sangiovese, followed by Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The property extends over 55 hectares of which 22 are vineyards and lies in a beautiful setting where the demanding conditions that draw out the best in grapes are endowing them with temperament. The rigorous climate and terroir create character in a wine. Among the many different elements that make Podernuovo a Palazzone unique are its climate cycles and its vineyards located in different altitudes and sun exposures. The terroir is contained between Monte Cetona and other nearby hills and it is not over affected by the presence of large lakes or reservoirs. The range of temperatures between day and night are extreme, and the same is true for the summer and winter. Working the land is hard work but vital for our type of agriculture. For our grapes to be healthy and productive they have to be submitted to a significant temperature stress. This confers the unique structure and richness to our wines. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone 9 TH E CELLA R The “jewel” of the estate is without doubt the cellar that hosts all the production premises. Designed to perfectly blend-in with the landscape, it is a prime example of highly functional but entirely non invasive architecture. The estate uses geothermal sources to heat and cool the entire wine production and aging process, the solar power plants are used for energy to guarantee a harmonic approach to the landscape. Through a long corridor one gets access to all the production premises, from the vinification, maceration to the aging of the wines to the packaging and shipment. The tasting room whit its unparelleled view on the entire process and also on the landscape completes the experience. Gardens and terrace surround the wine cellar that was conceived by Alvisi Kirimoto & Partners. The walls are very thick and the structure of the cellar follows the ground’s morphology. The cellar in its Siena coloured tones perfectly integrates into the landscape. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone 10 TH E CELLA R The cellar was designed by prominent architect Massimo Alvisi of Alivisi-Kirimoto & Partners, an international firm with a strong focus on sustainability and eco-consciousness. As everyone who works at Podernuovo will confirm, land and nature are the most important elements of this project. The challenge was to build a cellar that could “support” nature, let the wines mature, without being invasive. Perfectly in line with our winemaking philosophy, Alvisi managed to design an elegant, modern yet simple, functional, efficient and above all environmentally sustainable building with breath-taking views. Massimo Alvisi commented “Beauty in my mind is mainly related to function, and a building is functional if the people who work in it enjoy its surrounding, feel the space around them as serene and not oppressive. I find this place very beautiful”. Confidential and Privileged| Podernuovo aPalazzone 11 MARKETIN G AN D C OMMUNIC A TIO N The logo designed by Japanese architect and designer Junko Kirimoto is a reference to a vineyard picture taken many years ago by Giovanni’s mother at his grandmother’s vineyard near Rome, a place where Giovanni has spent a lot of time during his childhood. The designer has reproduced the vineyard by using a Japanese paint brush using the colour of our wine. We believe this logo ideally represents the elegance and simplicity that are the core element of our philosophy. Marketing and Communication is managed by Francesca Zanoni who has worked for many years at Bulgari before joining Podernuovo a Palazzone. Francesca is well acquainted with the family; in her view, the core element of this project is Giovanni Bulgari’s sense of excellence and elegance that can be applied from wine to his communication. She knows the level of excellence that Bulgari family strives to achieve neither related to cost of the wine nor their family name but rather to the DNA and she is there to make this known.

e.g. Burgundy 2000 Italy, Sicily: A Spotlight on Planeta’s Didacus MONICA LARNER 18th Mar 2021 | The Wine Advocate (/articles/the-wine-advocate) | March 2021 Week 3 (/articles/the- wine-advocate?issue=GPJPk6WFMAniSRFxN) With this article I’d like to honor the memory of a man who loomed large in Sicilian wine and who, to my mind and countless others, was one of the most respected protagonists of vino italiano. Diego Planeta died on September 19, 2020, at 80 years old. Some 20 to 30 years ago, Sicilian wine saw a complete overhaul, moving from a quantity-based farming philosophy to quality. This period of renewal, vigor and innovation was known as the Sicilian Wine Renaissance, and one of its architects, its Michelangelo, was Diego Planeta. His vision became the blueprint for a complete transformation of Sicilian wine. Sicilia is more than a wine appellation. It has become a global brand recognized across the food, travel and lifestyle sectors. Sicilian wine would nd its entry into the world of ne wine thanks to international grapes but would ultimately cement its reputation in that arena thanks to its rich patrimony of indigenous varieties. Indeed, the enormous biodiversity represented by Sicilian wine is its greatest competitive edge. Most importantly, Sicilia would become a ercely united group of like-minded wine producers under the leadership of Diego Planeta and the other two leading architects of the Sicilian Wine Renaissance, Giacomo Rallo (of Donnafugata) and Lucio Tasca d’Almerita. Together, the three men founded Assovini Sicilia, the private vintners’ association that promotes Sicilian wine, and other initiatives that would make wine a cornerstone of the island economy.

This month we travel to the toe and heel of the boot of Southern Italy and Sardinia to discover the luscious wines produced in these regions. The wines from these areas may not be as famous as their northern neighbours. Nevertheless, they are experiencing a renaissance that is catching a lot of attention. Southern Italy's vineyards are ancient and host hundreds of offbeat, native grape varieties. Our guest speaker, Jay Whiteley, an Italian Wine Educator with Ian D'Agata's 3iC school, will help us sort through the wines and grapes from Sicily, Calabria, Sardinia, Compania, Puglia, Abruzzo, and Basilicata. In Campania and the northern part of Basilicata, winemakers have been finding success with the Aglianico grape. The slightly colder climate is ideal for this grape and produces wines that are garnet-colored with high tannins and acidity. Harsh when young, but after some aging they become elegant and complex, and reveal lovely plummy flavors with a hint of chocolate. Sardinia's terroir is a combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas offers useful diversity of topography and mesoclimates. To further these benefits, the available soils and bedrocks vary from granite, limestone and sandstone to mineral-rich clays and free-draining sands and gravels.

1 La Spinetta One Liter Club, for the real wine lover... Summer 2013 Keeping our fingers crossed... Vintage report 2013: who says 13 is a lucky number in Italy? First, the winter seemed endless, then the Spring did not want to come and now our Summer is still dealing with Spring. Everything is green after getting so much water in the past three months—we would make it through any drought, which is exactly what the vineyards need. This year’s vintage is about three weeks behind in its growth as we head into the hot and dry weather of June, July and August. What can we do? We keep our fingers crossed and pray for a hot and merciless Summer. We promise, we won’t complain if we have to sweat. By the way, a terrific Summer is also what all other wine regions in Europe need—can you imagine, it snowed in Burgundy on May 26th. Bruno, Carlo and Giorgio Rivetti and the La Spinetta Team A word from Giorgio “The grape does not fall far from the vine”…? I consider myself a very fortunate man. Among the many good things in my life that are all somehow related to wine and my passion for it, I am also a very proud father of three children. While my two girls from my second marriage are still very young, I have a grown up son, Andrea, 32 years, who not only shares my passion for grape juice, but who is driven, designated, very hard working and who shows great respect for me and what my family has done in the past 35 years.

UNDER $25 GREAT WINES Extracted From Rick Brusca’s Wine Database **** RED WINES **** A note about ratings. Although many magazines, web sites, and commercial retailers rate wines, the most influential are probably three magazines: The Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, and The Wine Advocate. The Wine Enthusiast magazine reviews over 1000 wines for each issue; not all are published, but all are available at their web site. Wine Spectator reviews 400-1000 wines per issue (and their wine editors taste about 20,000 wines each year). Both use a traditional 100-point scale, and both use panels of professional wine tasters. Tastings are usually done blind, in flights organized by varietal, appellation, or region, and often begin with a wine previously rated, which is tasted non-blind as a reference point. A typical tasting-session comprises 20 to 30 wines. The Wine Advocate, launched by wine critic Robert M. Parker in 1978, also reviews many wines in each issue. The magazine’s success allowed Parker to quit practicing law in 1984, and to devote himself full-time to wine (we should all be so lucky). In 2012, a majority stake in The Wine Advocate was sold to investors from Singapore, with a plan to go from print+online, to fully on-line; however, this has not happened and the print magazine still exists. The role of Editor-in-Chief went from Parker to Lisa Perotti-Brown, and a second editorial office opened in Singapore. Following lead wine critic Antonio Galloni’s departure from The Wine Advocate in 2013, three new core critics were recruited, Jeb Dunnuck, Monica Larner and Luis Guitérrez.

  • Italy, Tuscany: 1971 Tignanello October 30, 2015
Italy, Tuscany: 1971 Tignanello October 30, 2015 http://www.erobertparker.com Some forty years have passed since the first bottle of Tignanello was released in 1974. Piero Antinori, the man who conceived of this landmark red blend published a coffee table biography of his wine to celebrate its birthday. In his book, Tignanello 1971, A Tuscan Story, he writes: "Great wine is the sum of a grapevine and an idea." Piero Antinori had both, in generous supply, when he was charged with heading his family's wine company at the young age of 28. Thanks to a sudden burst of youthful inspiration, Antinori created a wine that would rewrite all the rules for vino Italiano and would bring his country to the enological world stage. The point cannot be exaggerated: Tignanello ushered Italy into the world of modern winemaking. It was nothing short of revolutionary. Tignanello is a wine of significant cultural context. At the end of the 1960's when Piero Antinori took over the Antinori wine dynasty, Italy was in the midst of the dynamic post-World War II reconstruction years known as the Italian Economic Miracle. There was a sense of optimism, hope and a feeling that a new era had started. This prolonged period of economic growth meant that people could buy their first home, car and travel abroad. Industry and manufacturing would spur renewed infrastructure and public works. Sophisticated political discourse and social momentum would lead to enormously creative years for art, literature and cinema. The year 1966 would prove to be a personal turning point for Piero Antinori: He was called to head the family wine company, he got married and he saw the birth of his first daughter Albiera.
