The Zara case study. È forse possibile, in tempi di crisi economica e finanziaria, considerare l’area Mediterranea come la nuova frontiera del rinascimento globale? Rispondere a questa domanda è stata la grande sfida che ci si è proposti in questa tesi di laurea. Cina, India e Brasile sono indubbiamente paesi performanti; ma se una potenziale via d'uscita alle problematiche economiche d'imprese europee meridionali, come ad esempio quelle italiane o spagnole, fosse da ricercare proprio dietro l’angolo? Sotto il profilo del business, l’area geografica del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa potrebbe essere a buon diritto considerata tra le più promettenti a livello globale, come testimonia il crescente fenomeno d'internazionalizzazione che si colloca alla base di scelte di delocalizzazione e investimento da parte di numerose aziende europee all’interno della regione. Tuttavia, un'attenta analisi in merito non può prescindere da una distinzione tra le due differenti aree che la compongono: da un lato i paesi mediorientali del Golfo Persico e dall’altro il Mediterraneo vero e proprio, area su cui verrà concentrata maggiormente l’attenzione.

Three gastrocotylid genera share similar morphology and anatomy but are distinguished by this character: Pseudaxine Parona & Perugia, 1890 has no vagina, Allogastrocotyle Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983 has two vaginae, and Pseudaxinoides Lebedev, 1968 has multiple vaginae. In the course of a study of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia 1890, we found specimens with structures resembling “multiple vaginae”; we compared them with specimens without vaginae in terms of both morphology and molecular characterisitics (COI barcode), and found that they belonged to the same species.

    IAI SEMINAR, ROME, 21 MAY 2009 Impact of the crisis for the Mediterranean Bénédict de Saint-Laurent Delegate General, ANIMA Investment Network Abstract This paper provides a prospective view of the economic future of Southern Mediterranean countries (MED countries), based on ANIMA and Invest in Med experience (EU programmes for the 2002-2011 period). It focuses on the impact of the current financial crisis, the economic perspectives offered to the region and its strategies for creating wealth or jobs. The MED economic situation is mixed. On the one hand, the challenges ahead are huge in terms of social needs, job creation, governance issues. The economic fabric is still weak and dominated by a few sectors and gigantic projects (energy, real estate, tourism, telecoms, textile, agri-business). SMEs do not receive the needed support, especially in terms of financing. On the other hand, the reforms implemented in most countries are starting to pay off. A positive growth differential has now been established vis-à-vis Europe, even in terms of GDP per capita. A significant increase in foreign investment has been observed over the last decade. Private equity funds are flourishing. The region is suffering from the ongoing financial crisis, but less than other parts of the world. The author, Bénédict de Saint-Laurent, is Delegate General of ANIMA -a multi-country platform supporting the economic development of the Mediterranean www.anima.coop – leading programmes such as Invest in Med www.invest-in-med.eu.     International Cartographic Association Commission on Cartographic Heritage into the Digital 14th ICA Conference Digital Approaches to Cartographic Heritage Conference Proceedings ISSN XXXX-XXXX - Thessaloniki, Greece, 8-10 May 2019 _____________________________________________________________________________________ Lyudmila Filatova1, Dmitri Gusev2, Sergey Stafeyev3 Iterative Reconstruction of Ptolemy’s West Africa Using Modern GIS Analysis Keywords: Claudius Ptolemy, ancient geography, GIS analysis, historical cartography, georeferencing Summary: The multifaceted and challenging problem of reconstructing Claudius Ptolemy’s map of ancient West Africa from the numeric coordinate data and other information found in his seminal ‘Geography’ and visualizing the results in modern projections using popular and powerful GIS tools, such as ArcGIS and Google Earth, is addressed by the authors iteratively. We apply a combination of several old and new techniques ranging from tradi- tional toponymic analysis to novel modifications of cluster analysis. Our hybrid human- machine method demonstrates that Ptolemy’s information on West Africa is a compilation of data from three or more sources, including at least one version or derivative of The Periplus of Hanno. The newest iteration adds data for three more provinces of Ptolemy’s Libya — Mauretania Caesariensis, Africa and Aethiopia Interior— to Mauretania Tingitana and Libya Interior investigated in an earlier, unpublished version of the work that the late Lyudmila Filatova had contributed to as the founder of our multi-year project. The surviv- ing co-authors used their newest digital analysis methods (triangulation and flocking with Bayesian correction) and took into account their recent finds on Ptolemy’s Sinae (Guinea/Senegal, where Ptolemy had placed fish-eating Aethiopians). We discuss some of the weaknesses and fallacies of the earlier approaches to the problem.
