SOUTHERN YACHT CLUB YOUTH FOILING WORLD CUP 2021 https://southernchallenge.squarespace.com B O R l hul no- N Mo ling Foi 69F T O S A I L PROPOSED BY JONATHAN WEYGER In February of 2021, the best youth sailors in the word will gather in Gaeta, Italy to represent their country and compete in the inaugural Youth Foiling World Cup. S O This will be a groundbreaking event with full foiling boats U sailed by coed teams representing 16 countries from around T the world. Southern Challenge will be the only team H representing the US, and we will represent Southern Yacht Club. E R The teams will race identical boats called Persico 69Fs that were specially designed for this event. Like the America's Cup boats, the N Persico 69Fs are full foiling monohulls that will test the capabilities C of the best youth sailors from around the world at boat speeds up B H to 35 knots. This creates closure rates of up to 70 knots and O provides the most extreme challenges available to any sailor, R A regardless of age, in the sport of sailing. N L L T E O N S G A E I L Southern Yacht Club Southern Yacht Club's history dates back to its founding in Pass Christian, Mississippi in 1849 making it the second oldest yacht club (falling shortly behind the venerable New York Yacht Club). A favorite destination among New Orleanians was the Pass Christian Hotel. There, SYC’s meetings were held and the hotel became its headquarters for many years. This changed in 1857 when the club moved to New Orleans, hosting its regattas on Lake Pontchartrain. The 17 years of Civil War and Reconstruction greatly curtailed boating activities. However, in 1878 the club held its first postwar S regatta. The following year, a handsome clubhouse was built over O the water of Lake Pontchartrain. It became the scene of many elaborate social events, as well as numerous regattas. In 1899 a new U and larger clubhouse was built and in the 1920s, the clubhouse was T extensively enlarged and renovated. The grand ballroom addition H hosted many gala events which featured many emerging jazz pioneers of the day. During World War II, SYC saw heavy use by the E US Navy and Coast Guard and following the war in 1949. R A third clubhouse was expanded in the 1960s and '80s. Another major N expansion was set to begin in 2005, but Hurricane Katrina put a halt on plans. Southern's clubhouse was destroyed by a massive fire which burned in solitude C for hours following the storm. After two years of construction, Southern Yacht B H Club's fourth West End clubhouse was opened in 2009. Once again, SYC had a O permanent home and to this day, she is the crown jewel of the New Orleans R A Lakefront. Members of our yacht club have broken records and exceeded N boundaries in the world of sailing. Southern Yacht Club has won four Olympic L medals and numerous national and international championships. L T E Through more than 160 years of prosperity and adversity the Southern Yacht Club has O maintained a tradition of keen competition, sportsmanship and hospitality. We hope to N keep this tradition alive through our Southern Challenge campaign. Throughout the past S G few years, the Southern Yacht Club has been decreasing its participation in many large A regattas, with the exception of a few. Because of this, SYC has not been able to uphold its E I previous level of recognition and fame. We hope our campaign will not only bring that title L back to the Southern Yacht Club, but will put our name back on the map and show yacht clubs that we are still worth the invitation. Our skipper for this team is Langston Goldenberg. Langston, born and raised in New Orleans, learned how to sail at the age of eight.
