2016 Directory GULF YACHTING ASSOCIATION The Gulf Yachting Association was organized to promote the sport of yacht racing on the Gulf Coast and in nearby areas. Founded in 1901 and reorganized in 1920, the GYA has grown from the original six clubs to over thirty member organizations. The GYA sanctions various yachting events, including interclub competition in one design and handicap rated yachts, and serves to coordinate the activities of its members. The GYA is a member of the United States Sailing Association (US Sailing), the governing body of the sport in this country, and is recognized as a member “regional sailing association” (RSA) of that organization. As a member RSA, the GYA provides representation to US Sailing for its sailors, encourages participation in national championships sanctioned by US Sailing, and provides an Appeals Committee to decide appeals involving the racing rules. The GYA is one of four yacht-racing associations forming “Area D”, one of eleven areas in the United States. Areas are geographical delineations within the jurisdiction of US Sailing that serve many functions in the administration of the sport. Documents governing the activities of the GYA are the Articles of Incorporation, the Bylaws, any special rules of order adopted by the Board of Directors, the current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised, and various rules and regulations governing yacht-racing competition. Membership in the association is provided for in two classifications for yacht clubs and other organizations that promote yachting: General Membership, which carries full participation in GYA affairs and Affiliate Membership, which provides for participation on a reduced basis. There is also an Associate Membership for individuals and a Sponsoring Membership for corporations or other entities wishing to support the work of the GYA, neither of which carries voting rights within the GYA. The GYA is structured with a Board of Directors as the senior body, with full authority to govern the organization, an Executive Committee to run the organization between meetings of the Board, three councils that promote specific types of yacht racing, and various committees to accomplish the work of the organization. Gulf Yachting Association Archives A GYA Historical Records Collection was established in 1993 in the University Archives and West Florida history Center of the John C. Pace Library at the University of West Florida in Pensacola (phone 850-474-2000). Currently the collection contains the Minutes of GYA Board Meetings from November 1920 through the Winter Meeting, January 7, 1996, and Winter Meeting, January, 2001 through Winter Meeting, August 30, 2014. Hurricane Camille drove in from the Gulf of Mexico and obliterated the Mississippi and Alabama Coast. destroying five of our fellow yacht clubs. I am sure that in the past such a hurricane has destroyed maybe one or two other yacht clubs. but never in the history of yacht racing have five clubs been destroyed in one evening. Three of these clubs were completely destroyed and now are only a clean spot of ground. The only way you can tell that anything was there before is the fact that there is no grass on the ground where they once stood. Two of the other yacht clubs were torn apart to such a degree that they will have to be completely rebuilt. The support of you and your club and its members is desperately need­ ed to help rebuild these clubs. The completely destroyed clubs were the Pass Christian Yacht Club. The Gulfport Yacht Club and The Biloxi Yacht Club. The two other c1lJb9 most completely destroyed were the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club an4, Yacht Club. We at the New Crleans Yacht Club and The So~ survived this Hurricane with little or no damage: thereto try to do something to help our neighbors.

The GYC Manager and his staff have been working diligently to ensure your onshore activities go smoothly. During the last 40 years, anyone associated with the GYA during that time knows how much Walter contributed to this organization.     NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Sir Thomas Lipton, Once a New Orleans Streetcar Driver If you’ve ever had tea (hot or iced), you’re likely to associate the “Lipton brand” name with inexpensive boxes of individual tea bags and the slogan, “Brisk Lipton Tea”. But a century ago, the name “Lipton” stood for the largest chain of grocery stores in the world. And the company’s founder, Thomas J. Lipton (May 10, 1848 – 2 October 1931), was perhaps the most loved and admired man on the planet. A marketing genius, he discovered how to brand himself. Sir Thomas J. Lipton, the man and the brand Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, 1st Baronet, KCVO (Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order), born into poverty to parents who had fled Northern Ireland and the Irish famine of the 1840s, was also one of New Orleans’ most celebrated streetcar drivers. Sir Thomas Lipton, famous multimillionaire tea merchant and yachting enthusiast, was employed as a mule-driver on the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad (now the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line). It is because mules and horses were used in New Orleans that locals still say “streetcar” instead of “trolley.” Trolleys are the electrified version, which were introduced in New Orleans on February 1, 1893. A special song, the “Trolley Polka,” was written to celebrate the event, but New Orleanians stuck to calling them streetcars. Thomas J. Lipton was born the youngest of five children in Glasgow, Scotland, May 10, 1848, although he would later state his birth year as 1850.

A favorite destination among New Orleanians was the Pass Christian Hotel. There, SYC’s meetings were held and the hotel became its headquarters for many years.

    Welcome to the 33rd annual Lake Pontchartrain Racing Circuit! 33 years ago, in 1985 the LPRC was formed, “To foster yacht racing on Lake Pontchartrain at the highest level of competition and to cause New Orleans Yacht Club, Pontchartrain Yacht Club, South- ern Yacht Club and Tammany Yacht Club to work together toward the common goal of sponsoring a successful annual racing circuit.” The Regatta Chairman then was Stewart R. (Tootie) Barnet, Jr. The vison then, and now, was to conduct a PHRF Regatta on Lake Pontchartrain with two primary purposes – to promote the highest level of competition on Lake Pontchartrain. And equally import- ant - to promote social interaction among Lake Pontchartrain Yacht Clubs. The GYA’s Capdevielle Interclub Championship has similar goals for one design regattas. These types of interclub regattas promote interaction between area Yacht Clubs and foster lasting personal relationships between members of differing clubs. There’s also a degree of competition among LPRC yacht clubs who are proud to show off their club’s resources. The original 1985 LPRC was a three-weekend event. Today, the LPRC has responded to competitors’ suggestions and evolved into a 3-day event with three Divisions: Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, and Racer / Cruiser. The cornerstone of the event is the distance race across Lake Pontchartrain. The distance race between clubs accomplishes LPRC’s second mandate – “to cause New Orleans Yacht Club, Pontchartrain Yacht Club, Southern Yacht Club and Tammany Yacht Club to work together toward the common goal of sponsoring a successful annual racing circuit.” The LPRC Regatta Committee has been planning and working on this regatta over the last 6 months.

Administrative/Biographical History In 1984, WYES, New Orleans' public television station, began broadcasting Informed Sources, a program devoted to in-depth discussion of the news by local journalists. During that first show, a panel of journalists speculated about the reasons for the financial dilemmas of the Louisiana World Exposition, locally known as the World's Fair. Now more than two decades later, every Friday night at 7:00 p.m., Louisiana's newsmen and women continue to speculate, discuss and examine the news of the week. The idea for Informed Sources originated in 1971 on WYES with City Desk, a news and talk show, which featured the staff of the New Orleans States-Item and ran for seven seasons. The station had been without a news program for several years when Marcia Kavanaugh Radlauer, an experienced television reporter and independent producer, was asked to create a new show. Like City Desk, the format was a panel discussion of current news, but instead of featuring journalists from only one source, a variety of participants from television, radio, newspapers and eventually, online newsletters contributed their talents and expertise. Informed Sources originally included a "Newsmakers" interview to help fill the half-hour, but before long that segment was omitted.
