This project looks at the development of West End using the Sintes family and its boatbuilding business as a case study on how generational businesses are affected by tourism, natural disasters, and urban development. This project has used oral histories of the Sintes family to tell their personal story of West End, this terraqueous gap filled with boats, crawfish boils, natural disasters, and human loss, and in doing so, preserved and recorded a part of West End’s maritime lake culture that might otherwise be lost. Key Words: Maritime lake community; maritime lake culture; liminal space; terraqueous environment; local history; family business; New Orleans; Lake Pontchartrain vi Introduction The history of the Sintes family and its business, Sintes Boat Works and Sea Chest, a boat construction and repair marina on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a story of perseverance, hardship, and a community held together by water and land. The purpose of this project is to preserve and record a part of West End’s maritime lake culture through a family history defined

    1 50th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY® AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED The 50th Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards were presented Saturday evening, June 5th for the second time via webcast only. The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statues. Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2020 calendar year. A total of 912 entries were received, 765 English and 195 Spanish in 68 English Categories and 34 Spanish Categories. Nominations were announced on May 5th with 195 English and 76 Spanish. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to our accountant. The Spanish and English awards are judged and scored separately and then presented at the ceremony. 353 Emmy® statues were handed out to 263 individuals. The top two recipients were Maikel D'Agostino, Photograpoher/Editor, KUVS Unvision 19, Sacramento with ten, and Jonathan Bloom, Video Journalist, KNTV NBC Bay Area, with Six. The Emmy® is awarded to individuals but there is a lot of interest in the station counts: KNTV NBC Bay Area took home 16 for the English contest and KUVS Univision 19 with 12 for the Spanish contest. The overall Excellence Emmy® awards went to KNTV NBC Bay Area, English and KUVS Univision 19, Spanish. The prestigious Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can award was presented to Wayne Freedman, Reporter, KGO ABC 7, San Francisco.

    Geographies of New Orleans West End: “The Coney Island of New Orleans” Richard Campanella, Geographer, Tulane School of Architecture [email protected] Published in the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, November 3, 2019 Author’s note: This is the third in a series exploring the coastal communities that once surrounded greater New Orleans, principally along the brackish waters of the tidal lagoon known as Lake Pontchartrain. In previous months we looked at Spanish Fort and Milneburg; today we examine their neighbor to the west. Though utterly transformed today, these hamlets remind us that New Orleans, a riverine and deltaic city, may also be considered a coastal city. To most New Orleanians of the 1800s, Lake Pontchartrain represented two things. Firstly, it abounded in natural resources, including fish and game, oysters, and rangia shells, as well as timber, firewood, and clay in the piney woods on the other side. Secondly, the brackish bay was a recreational destination, where fresh breezes and bathing awaited city dwellers seeking respite from the malodorous metropolis. The problem was access: how to get across the swamplands between the city and lakeshore? The original route entailed trekking the Bayou Road and plying Bayou St. John northward to its lake outlet. To improve that connection, Spanish Gov. Hector Carondelet had excavated in 1794 a canal named for him to link with the bayou and access a lakeside point that been militarized since the early 1700s. Later known as Spanish Fort, this spot would become New Orleans’ first lakefront recreational destination, starting in the early 1820s. In 1831, downtown businessmen built a railroad to the lake and ordained a spot on the marshy shore, where Elysian Fields Avenue today crosses Leon C.

    Steve Rowland Actor, Singer, Columnist, Recording Producer, Author Born in Hollywood, actor, singer, columnist, author and record producer Steve Rowland grew up in Beverly Hills during the Golden Age of Hollywood. His father was film director Roy Rowland, his mother Ruth was a scriptwriter and the niece of Louis B. Mayer of MGM fame. Steve almost "naturally" began an acting career in the 50s, starring in over 35 TV shows like “Bonanza”, “Wanted Dead Or Alive” and a two year role in “The Legend of Wyatt Earp”. His first film appearance was at 11 year's old in MGM's "Boy's Ranch", singing Darling Clementine in the campfire scene. Film appearances included co-starring roles in “The Battle of the Bulge” with Henry Fonda and Telly Savalas, “Gun Glory” with Stuart Granger and Rhonda Fleming, “Crime in the Streets” with John Cassavetes and Sal Mineo, and the original “The Thin Red Line” with Keir Dullea and Jack Warden. These were also the years when as a member of "Hollywood royalty" Steve was inspired to write monthly columns for the popular fan magazines, The View From Rowland’s Head being the most famous, as he mingled with the stars and starlets of the time : Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Natalie Wood, Tuesday Weld, Kathy Case, Carmen Phillips to name a few. And with his all-time friend Budd Albright, he hit the music scene with the group "West Coast Twist Kings", and with Earl Bostic he performed in the "Ringleaders". The lure of ‘the swinging sixties’ soon brought Steve to London where he produced records for the Fontana label.

There is growing evidence of a culture that silences victims of harassment and those who report inappropriate workplace behavior at NBC. NBCUniversal’s recent decision not to renew Gabrielle Union’s contract on America’s Got Talent is just the ​ ​ latest example of a concerning pattern of behavior on the part of NBC. Union was allegedly let go after raising concerns about racist jokes made on set and having been told repeatedly that her hairstyles were “too black.” These allegations represent unacceptable workplace behavior that no one should be subject to, let alone terminated for reporting. We are grateful that NBC has committed to Union that they will investigate her allegations and termination. However, NBC must be transparent about the findings of their investigation and take concrete steps to reform the toxic culture throughout the company. Union’s experience is only one example of the systemic silencing of victims of harassment and those who have spoken up at NBC. As reported extensively by Ronan Farrow and others, NBC ignored complaints of sexual misconduct against Matt Lauer and stymied Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein while at NBC. Farrow has also reported that at least seven women have signed non-disclosure agreements with the company after alleging sexual harassment, including individuals who made complaints about Lauer before November 2017.

Hurricane Camille drove in from the Gulf of Mexico and obliterated the Mississippi and Alabama Coast. destroying five of our fellow yacht clubs. I am sure that in the past such a hurricane has destroyed maybe one or two other yacht clubs. but never in the history of yacht racing have five clubs been destroyed in one evening. Three of these clubs were completely destroyed and now are only a clean spot of ground. The only way you can tell that anything was there before is the fact that there is no grass on the ground where they once stood. Two of the other yacht clubs were torn apart to such a degree that they will have to be completely rebuilt. The support of you and your club and its members is desperately need­ ed to help rebuild these clubs. The completely destroyed clubs were the Pass Christian Yacht Club. The Gulfport Yacht Club and The Biloxi Yacht Club. The two other c1lJb9 most completely destroyed were the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club an4, Yacht Club. We at the New Crleans Yacht Club and The So~ survived this Hurricane with little or no damage: thereto try to do something to help our neighbors.
