THE LLANCARFAN SOCIETY Newsletter 107 October 2001 Editorial It seems an age since I completed the last Newsletter, probably because the world has erupted into such violence during the past two months. We must hope against hope that some semblance of normality will return soon, freeing the world from both terrorism and terror. On a much more mundane level, may I ask for some contributions for the Newsletter? Years ago we almost came to an end, scraping the barrel to fill the pages. Then, for inexplicable reasons, we had plenty of material which lasted until last summer. Suddenly, my files have emptied, so what about it? I would be happy to consider a wider variety of topics, if only to get rid of my own name as a bye-line on so many articles! We have only rarely featured anything I would consider as creative writing so that field is open, whilst accounts of current activities in the village are always welcomed by expatriates. My address is on the back page! People and places Cancer Research For the second successive year Ann Ferris took part in "Race for Life" in Cardiff's Bute Park, starting at 9.30 on 11th July 2001. Approximately 6500 women participated and Ann completed the walk in 44 minutes. Thanks to friends (not forgetting family) near and far, £101.00 has been denoted to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Cardiff International Airport and TBI, the firm that runs it, seem trouble fraught indeed. After making a take-over bid in early September, the French Construction Company, Vinci, has now withdrawn its offer, which had already been accepted by TBI shareholders.

Introduction 1.1. This topic paper is one of a series produced by the Vale of Glamorgan as part of the evidence base for the Deposit Local Development Plan (LDP). Each topic paper can be read in isolation or together to gain a wider understanding of how the policies and/or allocations in the LDP have been developed to address issues facing the Vale of Glamorgan. It considers the requirements for the Vale of Glamorgan LDP in respect of the housing land supply needed to address the population forecasts during the Plan period. Further details on the Council’s population projections for the Vale of Glamorgan are set out in a separate background paper entitled ‘Population and Housing Projections’ (2011) 2. The Vale of Glamorgan LDP Strategic Housing Objective and Policy 2.1. The LDP recognises that one of the greatest demands for development land during the Plan period will come from the provision of housing to meet future changes in population growth.

BOROUGH COUNCIL OF WELLINGBOROUGH AGENDA ITEM 4 Development Committee 17 February 2020 Report of the Principal Planning Manager Local listing of the Roundhouse and proposed Article 4 Direction 1 Purpose of report For the committee to consider and approve the designation of the Roundhouse (or number 2 engine shed) as a locally listed building and for the committee to also approve an application for the addition of an Article 4(1) direction to the building in order to remove permitted development rights and prevent unauthorised demolition. 2 Executive summary 2.1 The Roundhouse is a railway locomotive engine shed built in 1872 by the Midland Railway. There is some concern locally that the building could be demolished and should be protected. It was not considered by English Heritage to be worthy of national listing but it is considered by the council to be worthy of local listing. 2.2 Local listing does not protect the building from demolition but is a material consideration in a planning application. 2.3 An article 4(1) direction would be required to be in place to remove the permitted development rights of the owner. In this case it would require the owner to seek planning permission for the partial or total demolition of the building. 3 Appendices Appendix 1 – Site location plan Appendix 2 – Photos of site Appendix 3 – Historic mapping Appendix 4 – Historic England report for listing Appendix 5 – Local list criteria 4 Proposed action: 4.1 The committee is invited to APPROVE that the Roundhouse is locally listed and to APPROVE that an article 4 (1) direction can be made.

1 RAILS BY THE SEA 2 RAILS BY THE SEA In what ways was the development of the seaside miniature railway influenced by the seaside spectacle and individual endeavour from 1900 until the present day? Dr. Marcus George Rooks, BDS (U. Wales). Primary FDSRCS(Eng) MA By Research and Independent Study. University of York Department of History September 2012 3 Abstract Little academic research has been undertaken concerning Seaside Miniature Railways as they fall outside more traditional subjects such as standard gauge and narrow gauge railway history and development. This dissertation is the first academic study on the subject and draws together aspects of miniature railways, fairground and leisure culture. It examines their history from their inception within the newly developing fairground culture of the United States towards the end of the 19th. century and their subsequent establishment and development within the UK. The development of the seaside and fairground spectacular were the catalysts for the establishment of the SMR in the UK. Their development was largely due to two individuals, W. Bassett-Lowke and Henry Greenly who realized their potential and the need to ally them with a suitable site such as the seaside resort. Without their input there is no doubt that SMRs would not have developed as they did. When they withdrew from the culture subsequent development was firmly in the hands of a number of individual entrepreneurs. Although embedded in the fairground culture they were not totally reliant on it which allowed them to flourish within the seaside resort even though the traditional fairground was in decline.
