S.S. France – S.S. Norway S.S. France – S.S. Norway Die France wurde 1956 von der französischen Reederei CGT in Auftrag gegeben und entstand auf der Werft Chantiers de l‘Atlantique in St. Nazaire. Am 11. Mai 1960 lief die France nach der Taufe durch Madame De Gaulle vom Stapel und wurde am 6. Januar 1962 von der Werft abgeliefert. Ab Februar 1962 kam das Schiff auf der Nordatlantikroute zwischen Le Havre und New York zum Ein- satz. Bis 1969 hielten die France und die United States mit wechselseitigen Abfahrten den Transatlan- tik-Liniendienst aufrecht. Der Siegeszug der Luftfahrt zeichnete sich in den 1960er Jahren aber bereits deutlich ab. Vor allem in den Wintermonaten gingen daher zahlreiche Liner auf Kreuzfahrt. Doch auch das vermochte die verbliebenen Ozeandampfer nicht zu retten, zumal die Ölkrise den kostendeckenden Betrieb der „durstigen“ Schiffe völlig unmöglich machte. Die französische Re- gierung strich daher 1974 der CGT die Subventionen. Dies bedeutete das Ende: Die France wurde außer Dienst gestellt und in Le Havre am sogenannten „Pier der Vergessenen“ aufgelegt. 1979 erwarb der norwegische Reeder Knut Kloster das Schiff zum Schrottwert von 18 Mio. US-Dol- lar. Noch in Le Havre wurde die France in Norway umbenannt und verlegte zur Hapag-Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven. Hier sollte in neun Monaten aus dem Ozeanliner ein modernes Megakreuzfahrt- schiff entstehen – das erste seiner Art und Trendsetter für den bis heute anhaltenden Boom. Im Mai 1980 verließ die Norway die Werft und steuerte den neuen Heimathafen Oslo an, wo sie von Zehntausenden jubelnd empfangen wurde. Ausgangspunkt für die geplanten regelmäßigen Kreuzfahrten in die Karibik sollte Miami sein. Entgegen der Prophezeiung vieler Experten wurde die Norway binnen kürzester Zeit zu einem grandiosen Erfolg für die Norwegian Caribbean Line. 1990 erfolgte ein zweiter grundlegender Umbau in Bremerhaven. Am Morgen des 25. Mai 2003 ereignete sich an Bord der Norway, die nach einer Kreuzfahrt im Hafen von Miami lag, eine schwere Kesselexplosion, bei der acht Besatzungsmitglieder ums Leben kamen. Was zunächst keiner ahnte, sollte dieses Unglück das Ende der mehr als vier Jahrzehnte langen Dienstzeit bedeuten. Das Schiff wur- de am 15. August 2006 zum Abbruch vor dem indischen Alang gestrandet und bis 2008 komplett zerlegt. Modellbauer Bauzeit Maßstab Klaus Neureiter ca. 500 h 1:200.

It was constructed with funding from United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the prettiest merchant ship ever built. This china embodies both the mission of using nuclear power for peace while incorporating the design inclinations of the ship.

They speed past it on Columbus Boulevard, I-95, and the Walt Whitman Bridge. They glance at it while shopping at IKEA. For some, it is just another eyesore on Philadelphia’s desolate waterfront, no different from the moldering old cruisers and troop transports moored in the South Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Ghost Ship on the Delaware. www.ssunitedstatesconservancy.org Some may pull over to the side of the road and take a closer look through a barbed wire fence. They then realize that the Ghost Ship is of a different pedigree than an old troop transport. Its two finned funnels, painted in faded red, white and blue, are dramatically raked back. Its superstructure is low and streamlined, lacking the balconies and large picture windows that make today’s cruise ships look like floating condominiums. Its hull is yacht-like, defined by a thrusting prow and gracefully rounded stern. Looking across the river to Camden, one might see that the hull of the Ghost Ship bears more than a passing resemblance to the low-slung, sweeping one of the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey. This ship is imposing without being ponderous, sleek but still dignified. Even though her engines fell silent almost forty years ago, she still appears to be thrusting ahead at forty knots into the gray seas of the North Atlantic. Finally, if one takes the time to look at the bow of the Ghost Ship, it is clear that she has no ordinary name.

    Cruise line called on to take responsibility for toxic cruise ship 2006-07-26 18:07:16 Shipbreaking 26 July 2006 - In a registered letter(i) sent on 21 July 2006, the NGO Platform on Shipbreaking, representing over a dozen human rights, public health, and environmental organizations from the world over, delivered an ultimatum to Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) president, Mr. Colin Veitch, former owner of the SS Norway (SS Blue Lady, ex-SS France), to buy back the ship, completely decontaminate it of the over 1,200 tonnes of asbestos and unknown quantities of PCBs and other toxins, and to make the vessel available for sale to buyers wishing to re-use it. The coalition of human rights, public health, and environmental organizations threatened to launch a protracted consumer campaign against the cruise line company if it fails to act. The SS Norway was damaged by an engine room explosion in Florida in 2003. NCL subsequently sent the vessel to Germany and then to Malaysia and then sold it to Indian ship-breakers in the Spring of this year. The massive cruise ship contaminated with toxic waste materials is now anchored off the Alang ship-scrapping beaches. The Alang yards are notorious for widespread environmental contamination and horrific labor conditions where an estimated worker perishes per day either from accidents or from cancer from toxic substances inside the structure of the ships. “It is not acceptable that the environmental liabilities of this major tourism company be simply dumped on some of the poorest and most desperate workers in India,” said Ingvild Jenssen, coordinator of the NGO Platform from Brussels.
