  • Charles Stephen Hawtrey
Charles Stephen Hawtrey Background Charles was born in a poor part of London in 1925, the eldest of eight children. He was the first born, and the last remaining sibling. Charles started work long before the age of ten to support his family, trying many careers along the way including brick laying, baking, elephant handling at London Zoo, and the British Army. In his early 20’s Charles and favourite brother Ron worked at London airport refuelling planes when Charles developed his desire to learn to fly. Finally earning his pilot’s licence through the help of friends, he took off around the world and flew professionally in distant Canada and Africa. He loved South Africa and enjoyed trying many new careers there where he even ran his own pub for a while in Durban. Charles returned to London where he met his wife to be, Olive, who went on a date with him believing he was the famous radio and future movie star. They married in 1956 and earned a living from many different endeavours including raising pigs which Olive enjoyed before they were ready to start a family. In 1958 Charles and Olive moved to Melbourne as “Ten Pound Poms” on a small ship called Fairsky, to find new career opportunities and a better life. Initially he worked as a bus driver and a car salesman before joining Australian Fixed Trusts where he became their top salesman for a number of years running. Working in this field brought him in contact with many retirees and gave him the idea to start his first small development in Melbourne for the over 50’s.

Water Street in the 1880s with Borough Buildings in the centre. Photo courtesy of Colin Wilkinson. WALKING ON WATER STREET Graham Jones explores the histories of various buildings in the Water Street area. Part 3 – BOROUGH BUILDINGS, WATER ST (1859 – ca . 1970) 1 In its early years Borough Buildings lived gracefully between two buildings which captured greater attention: Oriel Chambers (1864) at 14 Water Street, for which Peter Ellis was so rudely criticised when the building was originally constructed, and Middleton Buildings (ca. 1859) at 8 Water Street which, until 1916, was the home of the Cunard Line. The comment in Charles Reilly's 1921 tour of Water Street, 2 – “After the empty site, where the old Cunard Building was, comes the oddest building in Liverpool – Oriel Chambers,...” gives the impression that Borough Buildings did not exist. But it did, and during the century of its existence it provided office accommodation for The Liverpool Steam Ship Owners' Association, the American Chamber of Commerce and a variety of important businesses and shipping lines. Trade between America and the U.K.'s premier port had become so important by the end of the 18th century that an American Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1801. The first three attempts at laying a transatlantic cable between 1857 and 1865 had ended in failure when the cables broke or developed faults, but success was finally achieved in 1866, with the Great Eastern being one of the ships involved in cable laying. On September 20th of that year, following a letter from the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce regarding their proposal for a public dinner to celebrate the laying of the cable, the American Chamber met at Borough Buildings (to which they had moved their offices in 1864 from Exchange Street West).

1954, Addio Trieste... The Triestine Community of Melbourne Adriana Nelli A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University November 2000 -^27 2->v<^, \U6IL THESIS 994.5100451 NEL 30001007178181 Ne 1 li, Adriana 1954, addio Trieste— the Triestine community of MeIbourne I DECLARATION I hereby declare that this thesis is the product of my original work, including all translations from Italian and Triestine. An earlier form of Chapter 5 appeared in Robert Pascoe and Jarlath Ronayne, eds, The passeggiata of Exile: The Italian Story in Australia (Victoria University, Melbourne, 1998). Parts of my argument also appeared in 'L'esperienza migratoria triestina: L'identita' culturale e i suoi cambiamenti' in Gianfranco Cresciani, ed., Giuliano-Dalmati in Australia: Contributi e testimonianze per una storia (Associazione Giuliani nel Mondo, Trieste, 1999). Adriana Nelli ABSTRACT Triestine migration to Australia is the direct consequence of numerous disputations over the city's political boundaries in the immediate post- World War II period. As such the triestini themselves are not simply part of an overall migratory movement of Italians who took advantage of Australia's post-war immigration program, but their migration is also the reflection of an important period in the history of what today is known as the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.. 1954 marked the beginning of a brief but intense migratory flow from the city of Trieste towards Australia. Following a prolonged period of Anglo-American administration, the city had been returned to Italian jurisdiction once more; and with the dismantling of the Allied caretaker government and the subsequent economic integration of Trieste into the Italian State, a climate of uncertainty and precariousness had left the Triestines psychologically disenchanted and discouraged.

The ship was remarkable in that it was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. It was constructed with funding from United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the prettiest merchant ship ever built. This china embodies both the mission of using nuclear power for peace while incorporating the design inclinations of the ship.
