    J. Black Sea/Mediterranean Environment Vol. 20, No. 2: 122˗126 (2014) RESEARCH ARTICLE Phthalates pollution in algae of Turkish coast Sinem Erakın, Neşe Binark, Kasım Cemal Güven1*, Burak Coban2, Hüseyin Erduğan3 1 Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV), P. O. Box: 10, Beykoz, Istanbul, TURKEY 2 Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Bulent Ecevit University, Zonguldak, TURKEY 3 Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, 18 Mart University, Çanakkale, TURKEY *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract In this work phthalates pollution in red, brown and green algae in the Black Sea, Istanbul Starait and Çanakkale Strait were investigated. The detected phthalate derivatives were DEP, DIBP, DBP and DEHP. Very toxic phthalate DEHP was found only in the Istanbul Strait. Phthalates pollution of algae depends on the pollution of sea water. Keywords: Phthalates, red, brown, green algae, Turkish coast Introduction Phthalates are phthalic acid esters used since 1931. They increase flexibility and transparency of plastics, detergents, wax, paints, printings, textiles and also used in pharmacy as tablet coatings, emulsifying, suspending agents and cosmetics. They were used approximately six million tons every year. Phthalates are released into environment during various utilization and create high risk for human health. They cause breast/hepatic cancer, allergies, disrupt endocrine system. Various phthalate derivatives are shown in Table 1. Phthalates have been detected in seawater and marine organisms by various authors (Giam et al. 1978; Sullivan et al. 1982; Ernst 1983; Waldock 1983; Preston and Al˗Omran 1986; Tan 1995; Wahidulla and De Souza 1995), in fish (Stalling et al. 1973), in jellyfish in the atoll (Morris 1970), in shrimp (Laughlin et al.

To compensate for this apparent injustice, Kommersant Vlast analytical weekly has compiled The Entire Russian Fleet directory. It is especially topical since even Russia’s Commander-in-Chief compared himself to a slave on the galleys a week ago. The directory lists all 238 battle ships and submarines of Russia’s Naval Fleet, with their board numbers, year of entering service, name and rank of their commanders. It also contains the data telling to which unit a ship or a submarine belongs. For first-class ships, there are schemes and tactic-technical characteristics. So detailed data on all Russian Navy vessels, from missile cruisers to base type trawlers, is for the first time compiled in one directory, making it unique in the range and amount of information it covers. The Entire Russian Fleet carries on the series of publications devoted to Russia’s armed forces. Vlast has already published similar directories about the Russian Army (#17-18 in 2002, #18 in 2003, and #7 in 2005) and Russia’s military bases (#19 in 2007).

RELATIONAL NARRATIVES: CONSTRUCTING MEANING IN CONTEMPORARY LITERATURES IN FRENCH by Rebecca Loescher A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland March, 2017 Abstract The act of narrating permeates daily life: from the tales we tell about our identities to published works of fiction, narratives fundamentally shape human perception. With this in mind, Relational Narratives: Constructing Meaning in Contemporary Literatures in French explores narrative mode as a means for structuring innovative thought-models. Marrying close readings with socio-cultural analyses, it examines relational narrative modes in six works of prose published since the turn of the 1980s: François Bon’s Sortie d’usine (1982), Assia Djebar’s L’Amour, la fantasia (1985), Maryse Condé’s Traversée de la Mangrove (1989), Patrick Chamoiseau’s Texaco (1992), Koffi Kwahulé’s Babyface (2006), and Annie Ernaux’s Les Années (2008). Part One, on narrative voice and temporality, argues that relational narratives bring temporally divergent voices into a single space of resonance. Part Two turns to the portrayal of narrative truths, whether collective, individual, historical, or purely fabricated, as well as to the mixing of genres, which include autobiography, historical realism, testimony, ethnography, and the marvelous. I contend that truth in relational narratives is multiple and shifting, and requires that the reader actively construct meaning. Finally, Part Three examines the political implications of relational narration. First, I show that relational narratives remain fully grounded in specific socio-cultural contexts — or their lieu, the space from which Édouard Glissant contends relation becomes possible.

  • Freedom by Reaching the Wooden World: American Slaves and the British Navy During the War of 1812
Freedom by Reaching the Wooden World: American Slaves and the British Navy during the War of 1812. As HMS Victorious lay at anchor in Lynnhaven Bay, off Norfolk, in the early morning hours of 10 March 1813, a boat approached from the Chesapeake shore.1 Its occupants, nine American Black men drew the attention of the sailors in the guard boat circling the 74 gun ship. The men were runaway slaves. After a cautious inspection, the guard boat’s crew towed them to the Victorious where the nine Black men climbed up the ship’s side and entered freedom.

Why these the following year. They settled at Danville, Montgomery County, men did not follow the overwhelming majority of their cadet where Sharp read for the law and set up his practice.
