Bibliographie Grünes Gewölbe 1800 Bis 2020 Bibliographie Grünes Gewölbe 1800 bis 2020 CHRISTINE NAGEL Die Zusammenstellung ist der Versuch, sämtliche Literatur zur Geschichte und den Werken der kurfürstlichen und königlichen Schatzkammer Grünes Gewölbe, der Kunst- kammer und des Museums Grünes Gewölbe seit 1800 zu erfassen. Im 18. Jahrhundert legte zunächst Johann Georg Keyßler in seinen Neuesten Reisen vom 30. Oktober 1730 eine Kurzbeschreibung der einzelnen Räume des Grünen Gewölbes vor. Es folgten einige ähnlich summarische. Mit dem 1831 von Carl Andreas Adolph Freiherr (Baron) von Landsberg publizierten Sammlungsführer »Das grüne Gewölbe in Dresden« begann die tiefergehende Auseinandersetzung mit einzelnen Stücken, die in den folgenden Publika- tionen verfeinert wurde. Die fortschreitende Forschungsarbeit lässt sich in den immer ausführlicheren Museumsführern verfolgen. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erschienen zudem die ersten illustrierten Werke. Zur besseren Orientierung in der Geschichte des Museums sind die Amtszeiten der Inspektoren und Direktoren des Grünen Gewölbes vorangestellt. Neben Bestandskatalogen und Sammlungsführern entstanden zahlreiche Aufsätze und Beiträge in Fachzeitschriften, Ausstellungskatalogen und Monographien; sowohl von den Mitarbeitern der Sammlung als auch von externen Wissenschaftlern, die, soweit sie recherchierbar und bekannt sind, hier aufgenommen wurden. Die Bibliographie gliedert sich in drei Abschnitte: Der erste umfasst dabei die Zeit vor der kriegsbedingten kompletten Schließung und Auslagerung 1942, der zweite zeigt den Neubeginn der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit nach der Rückkehr der Bestände aus der Sow- jetunion 1958, und der dritte spiegelt die wissenschaftliche Arbeit nach der politischen Wende 1989/90 wider. Innerhalb der chronologischen Ordnung sind die Publikationen in Ausstellungskataloge und weitere Literatur unterschieden, wobei letztere in alphabetischer Reihenfolge aufge- listet ist. Nicht aufgenommen wurden die zahlreichen Artikel in Tageszeitungen, Berichte über die Arbeit der Museen in den Jahrbüchern der Königlichen bzw. Staatlichen Kunssammlun- gen Dresden, Rezensionen und Kalender. Bei Publikationen (Bildheften, Ausstellungs- führern, Monographien), die mehrere Auflagen erreichten, sind die unveränderten Wie- derauflagen bei der Erstauflage genannt. Vereinzelt waren Auflagen nicht mehr nach- weisbar. Katalogeinträge sind nicht einzeln erfasst, da dies den Rahmen sprengen würde. Die Auswahl der Ausstellungskataloge erfolgte unter dem Kriterium der maßgeblichen Beteiligung des Grünen Gewölbes oder der in der Sammlung liegenden wissenschaftlichen Leitung der Publikation oder Ausstellung. Powazek Master of Arts, Graduate Program in Art History University of California, Riverside, June 2020 Dr. Kristoffer Neville, Chairperson When the Albertine Dukes of Saxony gained the Electoral privilege in the second half of the sixteenth century, they ascended to a higher echelon of European princes. Elector August (r. 1553-1586) marked this new status by commissioning a monumental tomb in Freiberg Cathedral in Saxony for his deceased brother, Moritz, who had first won the Electoral privilege for the Albertine line of rulers. The tomb’s magnificence and scale, completed in 1563, immediately set it into relation to the grandest funerary memorials of Europe, the tombs of popes and monarchs, and thus establishing the new Saxon Electors as worthy peers in rank and status to the most powerful rulers of the period. By the end of his reign, Elector August sought to enshrine the succeeding rulers of his line in an even grander project, a dynastic chapel built into Freiberg Cathedral directly in front of the tomb of Moritz.

Abstract This thesis challenges the traditional paradigm, which assumes that the period c.1050-c.1250 saw a move away from the ‘biblical’ or ‘liturgical’ kingship of the early Middle Ages towards ‘administrative’ or ‘law-centred’ interpretations of rulership. By taking an interdisciplinary and transnational approach, and by bringing together types of source material that have traditionally been studied in isolation, a continued flourishing of Christ-centred kingship in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries is exposed. In demonstrating that Christological understandings of royal power were not incompatible with bureaucratic development, the shared liturgically inspired vocabulary deployed by monarchs in the three realms is made manifest. The practice of monarchical inauguration forms the focal point of the thesis, which is structured around three different types of source material: liturgical texts, narrative accounts and charters. Rather than attempting to trace the development of this ritual, an approach that has been taken many times before, this thesis is concerned with how royal inauguration was understood by contemporaries. Key insights include the importance of considering queens in the construction of images of royalty, the continued significance of unction despite papal attempts to lower the status of royal anointing, and the depth of symbolism inherent in the act of coronation, which enables a reinterpretation of this part of the inauguration rite.

    HANDPICKED COLLECTING BOXWOOD CARVINGS FROM THE SIXTEENTH TO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURIES Alexandra Suda & Barbara Drake Boehm In 1862, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in Protestant England, the Duke of Devonshire sent a circlet of carved wooden prayer beads to a special exhibition at London’s South Kensington Museum, which had opened only five years earlier ‘to increase the means of industrial education and extend the influence of science and art upon productive industry.’1 Even in the vast halls of that great museum, and among over eight thousand works of art, this precious object from the duke’s collection at Chatsworth House was undoubtedly a surprising − even suspect − object [FIG. 134].2 Of the rosary’s myriad images, drawn from both the Old and New Testaments, only two, on the circlet’s terminal paternoster nut, were singled out for mention in the catalogue: ‘The Crowning of the Virgin’ and ‘The Sacrifice of the Mass’, both long- standing sore points of dispute between Roman Catholics and Protestants, the one having to do with the role of the Virgin Mary and the other the inter- pretation of the Last Supper of Christ and his apostles. The scene described as ‘The Sacrifice of the Mass’ is, more specifically, a depiction of the Mass of St Gregory [FIGS. 135, 136]. For Roman Catholics, the story of Christ’s appearance to St Gregory at the al - tar confirmed the doctrine of transubstantiation: the belief that the bread and wine of the Mass become the body and blood of Jesus. It is a family collection, formed by a father and son: Baron Anselm von Rothschild (1803–1874) of Frankfurt and Vienna, and Baron Ferdinand, who became a British citizen in 1860, and a Trustee of the British Museum in 1896. Named after Baron Ferdinand’s Renaissance-style château, Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, the Bequest is a 19th-century recreation of a princely Kunstkammer or ‘art chamber’ of the Renaissance. The collection demonstrates how, within two generations, the Rothschilds expanded from Frankfurt to become Europe’s leading banking dynasty.
