Overleden: 1982 Zoals veel juniorenmysteries, is de Nancy Drew-serie bedacht en werd (althans in het begin) de plot geschetst door Edward Stratemeyer [> Franklin W. Dixon] van het Stratemeyer Concern. Zijn dochter, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams nam later de uitgeverij over en claimde lange tijd de schrijver te zijn van àlle Nancy Drew-verhalen vanaf 1930 tot 1982. Onderzoek bracht aan het licht dat dit niet het geval was. De Nancy-verhalen werden, evenals andere Stratemeyer-series, geschreven door een aantal voorheen anonieme professionele schrijvers, waarvan de belangrijkste Mildred A. Wirt Benson (zie onder) was tot het moment dat Harriet Adams in 1953 (vanaf nummer 30) inderdaad begon met het schrijven van nieuwe delen en ook de oude delen vanaf 1959 reviseerde. British Royal Banners 1199 – Present Geoff Parsons & Michael Faul Abstract The presentation begins with the (accepted) date of 1199, the death of King Richard I, the first king known to have used the three gold lions on red. It continues to show how King Edward III added the French Royal Arms, consequent to his claim to the French throne. There is then the change from “France Ancient” to “France Modern” by King Henry IV in 1405, which set the pattern of the arms and the standard for the next 198 years. The story then proceeds to show how, over the ensuing 234 years, there were no fewer than six versions of the standard until the adoption of the present pattern in 1837. The presentation includes pictures of all the designs, noting that, in the early stages, the arms appeared more often as a surcoat than a flag. There is also some anecdotal information regarding the various patterns. Abstract MERRILL, ASHLEY CHRISTINE. The Evolution of Nancy Drew, Cultural Icon: Readers, Writers, and Fanfiction Authors. (Under the direction of Mary Helen Thuente.) Nancy Drew is widely recognized as an influential American cultural icon. In this paper I make a detailed examination of Nancy's initial characterization as girl sleuth in the first ten books of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, published in the 1930s. I spend another chapter examining the initial volumes of later Nancy Drew series books, specifically the 1960s rewritten texts, the 1980s-90s Nancy Drew Files series, and the contemporary Girl Detective series. My penultimate chapter discusses Nancy Drew as realized in fanfiction, or stories written by readers and fans. My emphasis is on explaining Nancy's appeal as a cultural icon and the ways fanfiction authors reinvent and appropriate that icon for their own purposes in stories. To this end I cite fanfic writers and readers' response to why they read and write Nancy Drew fanfiction, and I analyze the content and function of a sample of stories written by Nancy Drew fans. I conclude that Nancy's appeal and the basis of her status as cultural icon is due to her unique nature as a figure frozen in transition between adolescence and adulthood, along with her more conventionally admirable traits. Her Everygirl appearance when removed from that unique matrix makes her extremely adaptable to readers for their own purposes, both within the context of fanfiction and without. Make Your Own Lion and Unicorn Puppets
Scotland’s historic properties feature lots of lions and unicorns – they’re in Scotland’s royal coat of arms. Lions were thought to represent bravery and strength – the king of the animal world. The unicorn has been a Scottish royal symbol for around 600 years and – believe it or not – is Scotland’s national animal. Unicorns symbolised innocence and power. People considered them wild and untamed, so they’re often shown chained around their neck. When James VI of Scotland unified Scotland and England in 1603, he changed his coat of arms to include one unicorn and one lion either side of a shield. TOP TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR PUPPETS This activity ideally needs a printer and some brass paper fasteners. If you don’t have a printer, why not use the templates as inspiration for drawing your own versions! And if you don’t have paper fasteners (split pins), you could experiment with tying a big knot in some string or wool, threading the string through a small hole in your papers (a hole punch would create too big a hole) and tying another big knot on the other side. If you’ve got beads or buttons you could also use these to secure the wire/string/wool either side of the paper body parts you’re attaching together. A Novel Idea: A Narrative Inquiry into Queer Engagements with Fiction By Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Curriculum, Teaching, & Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd 2015 A Novel Idea: A Narrative Inquiry into Queer Engagements with Fiction Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd Doctor of Philosophy Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This thesis explores the role reading novels (textual or graphic) played in the survival and desires of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer) students. At the time this research project was conceived, there were not many psychoanalytic and queer feminist critical literacy research studies concerned with how LGBTQ students were using literacy in relation to self-care and trauma caused by anti-LGBTQ oppression. Also LGBTQ students were frequently being characterized in positivist anti-oppression research as one-dimensional victims who were not exercising any agency, while being told by lesbian and gay celebrities to tolerate unlivable conditions at their schools because a better life in a LGBTQ enclave awaits them. Disempowering research, the unlivable lives LGBTQ students are expected to endure in schools and the need for further queer feminist research into specifically queer and trans critical literacies served as the central motivations for the undertaking of this project. This research study focuses on the ways in which LGBTQ students have come to understand the relationships between reading novels, self-care, trauma, and the development of a queer critical literacy. Narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and creative analytic practices were the methodologies used in this project. -

HERALDIC TERMS The following terms, and their definitions, are used in heraldry. Some terms and practices were used in period real-world heraldry only. Some terms and practices are used in modern real-world heraldry only. Other terms and practices are used in SCA heraldry only. Most are used in both real-world and SCA heraldry. All are presented here as an aid to heraldic research and education. A LA CUISSE, A LA QUISE - at the thigh ABAISED, ABAISSÉ, ABASED - a charge or element depicted lower than its normal position ABATEMENTS - marks of disgrace placed on the shield of an offender of the law. There are extreme few records of such being employed, and then only noted in rolls. (As who would display their device if it had an abatement on it?) ABISME - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ABOUTÉ - end to end ABOVE - an ambiguous term which should be avoided in blazon. Generally, two charges one of which is above the other on the field can be blazoned better as "in pale an X and a Y" or "an A and in chief a B". See atop, ensigned. ABYSS - a minor charge in the center of the shield drawn smaller than usual ACCOLLÉ - (1) two shields side-by-side, sometimes united by their bottom tips overlapping or being connected to each other by their sides; (2) an animal with a crown, collar or other item around its neck; (3) keys, weapons or other implements placed saltirewise behind the shield in a heraldic display. -

Town Unveils New Flag & Coat of Arms
TOWN UNVEILS NEW FLAG & COAT OF ARMS For Immediate Release December 10, 2013 Niagara-on-the-Lake - Lord Mayor, accompanied by the Right Reverend D. Ralph Spence, Albion Herald Extraordinary, officially unveiled a new town flag and coat of arms today before an audience at the Courthouse. Following the official proclamation ceremony, a procession, led by the Fort George Fife & Drum Corps and completed by an honour guard from the 809 Newark Squadron Air Cadets, witnessed the raising of the flag. The procession then continued on to St. Mark’s Church for a special service commemorating the Burning of Niagara. “We thought this was a fitting date to introduce a symbol of hope and promise given the devastation that occurred exactly 200 years to the day, the burning of our town,” stated Lord Mayor Eke. “From ashes comes rebirth and hope.” The new flag, coat of arms and badge have been granted by the Chief Herald of Canada, Dr. Claire Boudreau, Director of the Canadian Heraldic Authority within the office of the Governor General. Bishop Spence, who served as Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Niagara from 1998 - 2008, represented the Chief Herald and read the official proclamation. He is one of only four Canadians who hold the title of herald extraordinary. A description of the new coat of arms, flag and badge, known as armorial bearings in heraldry, is attached. 113 The Law of Arms in New Zealand: A Response Gregor Macaulay* :Noel Cox has written that "Ifany laws of arms were inherited by New Zealand, it 'was the Law of Arms of England, in 1840",1 and that in England and l'Jew Zealand today "the Law of Arms is the same in each jurisdiction",2 The statements cannot both be true; each is individually mistaken; and the English la~N of arms is in any case unworkable in New Zealand. In England, the laws of arms may be defined as the law governing "the use of anms, crests, supporters and other armorial insignia [which] is to be found in the customs and usages of the [English] Court ofChivalry",3 "augmented either by rulings of the [English] kings of arms or by warrants from the Earl Marshal [of England]".4 There are several standard reference books in English heraldry, but not even one revised and edited by a herald may, in his own words, be considered "authoritative in any official sense",5 and a definitive volume detailing the law of arms of England has never been published. A basic difficulty exists, therefore, in knowing precisely what the content of the law is that is being discussed. Even in England there are some extraordinary lacunae. For instance, the English heralds seem not to know who may legally inherit heraldic badges.6 If the English law of arms of 1840 had been inherited by New Zealand it would have come within the ambit of the English Laws Act 1858 (succeeded by the English Laws Act 1908).
