The exceptional decor brings memories of the past back to life, upholds traditions, is home to the art of the people who lived here and plays host to prestigious events. It is not just a place steeped in history, though. It has much more to offer. The tradition of providing visitors with a warm welcome is as present as ever in its gourmet restaurants and delightful hotels that play host to celebrity guests. The Baux-de-Provence appellation is a symbol of quality. Its vines, grown on sun-drenched rocky soil, produce generous wines. Its olive oil is warm and fruity. Set in the heart of the Alpilles regional country park, Les Baux-de- Provence is a listed heritage site that has won titles such as “Remarkable Heritage Site”, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France” or an “Outstanding Centre for Flavoursome Food”. In fact, the village is unique because it is just that bit more famous than others, and just a bit more magical. Introduction Le projet de centrale photovoltaïque au sol se trouve sur la commune de Sénas au lieu dit la Sablière du Grand Vallon. Figure 1 : Localisation de l’aire d’étude par rapport au centre ville de Sénas (source : Google Earth) La lecture paysagère a été réalisée à différentes échelles, celles des périmètres d’étude. - 1/ Le périmètre d’étude immédiat correspond à l’aire d’étude : Il a essentiellement servi pour l’analyse des sensibilités des composants paysagers vis-à-vis de l’implantation et des travaux ainsi que pour les propositions de mesures d’intégration paysagère. - 2/ L’échelle locale celle du périmètre d’étude rapproché dans un rayon de 1,5 km : Elle a permis d’étudier plus finement les composants paysagers qui conditionnent les perceptions immédiates et rapprochées. - 3/ L’échelle du territoire celle du périmètre d’étude éloigné : Elle est volontairement large afin de prendre en compte tous les enjeux paysagers et patrimoniaux. Elle a permis de caractériser la nature des paysages et d’inventorier le patrimoine protégé. L’aire d’étude se situe à l’ouest de la commune de Sénas. Elle correspond à l’emprise d’une ancienne carrière colluvionnaire, d’environ 21 ha bordant la route RD569.

    This page intentionally left blank Murder in Aubagne Lynching, Law, and Justice during the French Revolution This is a study of factions, lynching, murder, terror, and counterterror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795–1798. Another major theme is the conver- gence of lynching from below with official terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to con- tinue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. This study uses the tech- niques of microhistory to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of factions, the emer- gence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror. D. M. G. Sutherland received his M.A. from the University of Sussex and his Ph.D. from the University of London. He is currently professor of history at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of The Chouans: The Social Origins of Popular Counterrevolution in Upper Brittany, 1770–1796 (1982), France, 1789–1815: Revolution and Counterrevolution (1985), and The French Revolution, 1770– 1815: The Quest for a Civic Order (2003) as well as numerous scholarly articles.

    Richard Thomson Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night the museum of modern art, new york The Starry Night without doubt, vincent van gogh’s painting the starry night (fig. 1) is an iconic image of modern culture. One of the beacons of The Museum of Modern Art, every day it draws thousands of visitors who want to gaze at it, be instructed about it, or be photographed in front of it. The picture has a far-flung and flexible identity in our collective musée imaginaire, whether in material form decorating a tie or T-shirt, as a visual quotation in a book cover or caricature, or as a ubiquitously understood allusion to anguish in a sentimental popular song. Starry Night belongs in the front rank of the modern cultural vernacular. This is rather a surprising status to have been achieved by a painting that was executed with neither fanfare nor much explanation in Van Gogh’s own correspondence, that on reflection the artist found did not satisfy him, and that displeased his crucial supporter and primary critic, his brother Theo. Starry Night was painted in June 1889, at a period of great complexity in Vincent’s life. Living at the asylum of Saint-Rémy in the south of France, a Dutchman in Provence, he was cut off from his country, family, and fellow artists. His isolation was enhanced by his state of health, psychologically fragile and erratic. Yet for all these taxing disadvantages, Van Gogh was determined to fulfill himself as an artist, the road that he had taken in 1880.

Pendant 4 jours, la France a été frappée et tétanisée par le massacre qui a vu disparaître 17 innocents. Mais la France n’a pas baissé la tête. Le dimanche 11 janvier marque un record absolu dans l’his- toire du pays : à travers la formidable et excep- tionnelle mobilisation de millions de citoyens, la France a envoyé un triple message à tous les peuples du monde. Un premier message de deuil, de recueillement, d’hommage aux victimes de cette barbarie, et de solidarité à leurs familles et à leurs proches. Un deuxième message de révolte, de résistance et de combat contre toute forme de fanatisme, d’into- lérance, d’intégrisme et de violence aveugle. Et, enfin, un troisième message de communion autour des valeurs de notre République dont nous sommes fiers : Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité, et en particulier la liberté qui englobe la liberté d’ex- pression, si bien symbolisée par Charlie Hebdo, coutumier de l’irrévérence joyeuse. Je remercie et félicite les 6 à 8 000 Saint-Rémoises et Saint-Rémois, ainsi que les très nombreux ha- bitants des communes voisines, qui ont participé ensemble à cet élan républicain et contribué à ce record national, voire international.
