This lesson uses vocabulary from the topic “Culture”.

Warm-up 1 Use this exercise or any other idea to teach/revise reality show and documentary. Ask students to give you some examples of both types of programmes. Accept their answers in Polish if necessary.

Reading and Speaking 2 Before students read the texts, write the names of the four programmes on the board and ask students to guess what the shows are about. Praise their ideas but do not reveal the answers. Ask students to read the descriptions and match them to the photos on the right. Tell students to ignore the highlighted words at this stage. Check the answers as a class and ask if any of their predictions were right.

Extra Idea If you have Internet access in your classroom, watch the trailers of these programmes.

3 Give students a few minutes to discuss the questions in pairs before eliciting their answers as a class.

4 This is a typical exam task. In this exercise, students have to read again the texts in Exercise 2 (descriptions of TV programmes) and texts A–C (notes with information about three teenagers). Their task to match the teenagers with the programmes they are likely to find interesting. Set a time limit for students to read the texts and do the matching. Do not explain any words at this stage. Encourage students to compare their answers in pairs before checking them as a class. Ask students to justify their answers.

Vocabulary 5 Before students do this exercise, ask them to focus on the highlighted words in Exercise 2. Check if students know these words or if they can work out their meaning from the context. For each word, ask: Is it a noun, a verb, an adjective etc.? Ask questions to check that students really understand them, e.g. Is Brad Pitt a minor celebrity? Has a medallist won or lost something? When you have taught/revised all nine words, ask students to complete the sentences. Point out that sometimes students have to write more than one word in each gap.

6 If possible, ask students to use dictionaries to check different meaning of the nine words until they find the answers to this task. If they need some help, point out that words 2– 4 are verbs.

Writing 7 This is an exam-style task. It's a good idea to do it in class, but if you are short of time, you can assign it as homework. Make sure that students have enough time to plan their answers at school, though.
