LIBRARY 13 © 1977 JOHN HENRY MEAGHER III ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 11 ABSTRACT This study examined architectural metaphor and setting in civic pageantry, religious processions, and selected re­ ligious plays of the middle ages and renaissance. A review of critical works revealed the use of an architectural setting and metaphor in classical Greek literature that continued in Roman and medieval literature. Related examples were the Palace of Venus, the House of Fortune, and the temple or castle of the Virgin. The study then explained the devotion to the Virgin Mother in the middle ages and renaissance. The study showed that two doctrines, the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of Mary, were illustrated in art, literature, and drama, show­ ing Mary as an active interceding figure. In civic pageantry from 1377 to 1556, the study found that the architectural metaphor and setting was symbolic of a heaven or structure which housed virgins personifying virtues, symbolically protective of royal genealogy. Pro­ tection of the royal line was associated with Mary, because she was a link in the royal line from David and Solomon to Jesus. As architecture was symbolic in civic pageantry of a protective place for the royal line, so architecture in religious drama was symbolic of, or associated with the Virgin Mother.

The Faux pas of a Vert Galant: The Historiography of Henry IV's Military Leadership Annette Finley-Croswhite* Old Dominion University Henry IV is one of the few historical figures whose military reputation rests on the fact that he operated successfully during the course of his life at all definable levels of military command: as a soldier and partisan leader, a battlefield tactician, a campaigner, and a national strategist. He fought in over two hundred engagements, never lost a battle, and was the major victor in four landmark battles. Nevertheless, until recently most judgments by French, British, and American historians, scholars like Pierre de Vaissière, Sir Charles Oman, Lynn Montross, and David Buisseret, have portrayed Henry IV not as a great military commander, but as a risk-taking opportunist, always the Vert Galant in the guise of a skilled tactician and cavalryman.

Powell Joan plantagenet, Known as the Fair Maid of Kent, was born in 1328. She grew to be one of the most beautiful and influential women of her age, Princess of Wales by her third marriage and mother of King Richard II. The study of her life sheds new light on the role of an intelligent woman in late fourteenth century England and may reveal some new insights into the early regnal years of her son. There are several aspects of Joan of Kent's life which are of interest. The first chapter will consist of a biographical sketch to document the known facts of a life which spanned fifty-seven years of one of the most vivid periods in English history. Joan of Kent's marital history has been the subject of historical confusion and debate. The sources of that confusion will be discussed, the facts clarified, and a hypothesis suggested as to the motivations behind the apparent actions of the personages involved. There has been speculation that it was Joan of Kent's garter for which the Order of the Garter was named. This theory was first advanced by Selden and has persisted in this century in the articles of Margaret Galway. It has been accepted by May McKisack and other modern historians.

Coss 2005 ABSTRACT The British soldier of the Peninsular War, 1808-1814, has in the last two centuries acquired a reputation as being a thief, scoundrel, criminal, and undesirable social outcast. Labeled “the scum of the earth” by their commander, the Duke of Wellington, these men were supposedly swept from the streets and jails into the army. Their unmatched success on the battlefield has been attributed to their savage and criminal natures and Wellington’s tactical ability. A detailed investigation, combining heretofore unmined demographic data, primary source accounts, and nutritional analysis, reveals a picture of the British soldier that presents his campaign and combat behaviors in a different light. Most likely an unemployed laborer or textile worker, the soldier enlisted because of economic need. A growing population, the impact of the war, and the transition from hand-made goods to machined products displaced large numbers of workers. Men joined the army in hopes of receiving regular wages and meals. In this they would be sorely disappointed. Enlisted for life, the soldier’s new primary social group became his surrogate family.

    The Origins of the Byzantine Empire: Anachronism and Evolution in Modern Historiography Joseph D. Wagner Introduction The modern understanding of the Byzantine Empire, the Roman Empire, which survived in Eastern Europe for over a thousand years, is a fallacy. There is no doubt that the Byzantines existed or that their empire occupied a place in the pantheon of world power. The issue under consideration is not so much when the Byzantine Empire began, but rather when this evolution of the Roman Empire first took place and how modern scholars view Byzantine origins. The term Byzantine Empire is an anachronism because what modern historiography calls “the Byzantines” never existed. Rather, these people considered themselves Roman even until the collapse of their empire in 1453 CE. This is relevant in today’s historiography for many reasons, among them because the Byzantine have not been studied with as much vigor as compared to their Greek and Roman ancestors. This is also an important historical issue because of a recent book detailing how the Byzantines dealt with their neighbors over the centuries. Edward Luttwak, a former political advisor and Johns Hopkins-trained historian, argued in his 2009 book The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire that the Byzantines were skilled diplomats, using money and land transfers to keep invading armies at bay.279 Luttwak proceeded to question whether these same strategies could be applied elsewhere; for example, in the United States. There are three schools of thought that rise from the relevant historiography: The Continuity School, the Discontinuity School, and the Evolution School. All three schools of thought will be discussed with due reference to their authors after an explanation of methodology.

Hall began work at the Public Record Office in 1879, ending his career there as an Assistant Keeper in 1921. At the same time, and until 1939, he was heavily involved with many organizations and institutions, most notably the Royal Historical Society, the London School of Economics and the Royal Commission on Public Records. His numerous activities as a ‘historical worker’ were aimed at the ‘promotion of historical enterprise(s)’. Before 1900 his writing, on historical topics, and his editorial work were carried out primarily independently. After that date much of his published work derived from his teaching work (most successfully from seminar-based collaborations); this included works which addressed archival science and archival management.

    The Art and Scienc of Victorian History Rosemary Jann THE ART AND SCIENCE OF VICTORIAN HISTORY By Rosemary Jatin The historical, Rosemary Jann reminds us, was the common coin of the nineteenth cen­ tury, the currency of its most characteristic art, and the security for its most significant intellectual transactions. Defenders of abso­ lutes, whether rational or religious, learned to use history as an asset and not a liability; and uneasy relativists found some compensation in its didactic value. Rival ideologies com­ peted for its sanctions. Poets and scientists looked to it for inspiration. The Victorians plundered the past for the raw stuff of imagination, and shaped what they found to their own political, social, and aesthetic ends. The explanatory value of the biological, the developmental, and the nar­ rative made the historical method the preemi­ nent paradigm of their age. It asserted its authority over both science and social science, and became the "philosophical" way of under­ standing national as well as personal identity. For Victorians, learning to harness what Wilfred Ward characterized as the "Time- spirit of the Nineteenth Century" was the best way to escape being driven by it. Professor Jann argues that works of history illuminate most fully the strategies essential to the nine­ teenth century's conquest of time. They are documents central to both the philosophical and literary dimensions of the Victorian mind. Standing at the intersection of its two ways of knowing, the rational and the imagi­ native, they perfectly reflect both that confla­ tion of the scientific, the historical, and the philosophical so characteristic of Victorian thought, and that didactic use bf the imag­ ined real that was central to its art.
