The Community Council is thrilled to have been granted £4,750 from the Big Lottery Fund : Awards for All to help us celebrate the Diamond Jubilee with a Jubilee Prom on Monday June 4th. This free event will take place at Radyr Golf Club which will be open to the public for the day. We will be staging a live music concert with a range of performers including youth bands, jazz and ending with a performance by a classical orchestra from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and, to end what we hope will be a wonderful day, lighting a beacon and fireworks. We will advertise this and other events over the four day weekend more widely nearer the time. I’m very pleased to say that after several years of negotiation, Cardiff Council’s Executive has approved the Charter with the other five community councils in Cardiff. We now have a liaison officer at Cardiff and once the documents are signed we hope to set up regular contact the better to work with Cardiff Council. Elsewhere in this issue you will see a questionnaire on the opening hours of Radyr Library. We hope you can let Cardiff know your preferences. We can’t extend the opening hours for now although we would like to and have asked Cardiff to consider it in future. We may be able to rearrange the hours we have and the questionnaire gives you some options. Over the past few months I have had questions about the use of traders’ signs. My understanding is that while a trader, say a builder or gardener, is working at a property they are allowed to put up a board with their name and other details. However, once that work has been completed the boards must come down. If a trade sign is left up after work is completed it becomes an advertisement and, surprisingly, that is a criminal act. The board can be reported to Cardiff Council’s planning enforcement team who can remove the sign. If the sign is on the highway, eg a grass verge, then the highways department can remove it. Cardiff Council’s system of receiving information via its C2C service works very well, I find. You can contact them by phone (20872087) or [email protected]. The more people who report something, for example a street light that has failed, flytipping or missed waste collections, the faster the response. If you do not wish to make a report yourself I am always happy to do it on your behalf. Helena Fox - Clerk to R&MCC
