Types of Dance Styles International Standard Ballroom Dances Ballroom Dance: Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertaining and elite styles of dancing. In the earlier days, ballroom dancewas only for the privileged class of people, the socialites if you must. This style of dancing with a partner, originated in Germany, but is now a popular act followed in varied dance styles. Today, the popularity of ballroom dance is evident, given the innumerable shows and competitions worldwide that revere dance, in all its form. This dance includes many other styles sub-categorized under this. There are many dance techniques that have been developed especially in America. The International Standard recognizes around 10 styles that belong to the category of ballroom dancing, whereas the American style has few forms that are different from those included under the International Standard. Tango: It definitely does take two to tango and this dance also belongs to the American Style category. Like all ballroom dancers, the male has to lead the female partner. The choreography of this dance is what sets it apart from other styles, varying between the International Standard, and that which is American. Waltz: The waltz is danced to melodic, slow music and is an equally beautiful dance form. The waltz is a graceful form of dance, that requires fluidity and delicate movement. When danced by the International Standard norms, this dance is performed more closely towards each other as compared to the American Style. Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style, gives a dancer flexibility to combine slow and fast dance steps together. -

Engaging Minds, Informing Practice Tutors and Presenters Alice White, MA, BA (Hons) Embracing Social Media Alice graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2015 with a First Class Honours degree in Contemporary Dance, and went on to gain an MA in Dance Performance at the University of Chichester. Currently the Lead Press and Communications Officer at the Royal Academy of Dance, Alice has previously worked in marketing and communications at organisations such as Trinity Laban and The Place, gaining an in depth and confident understanding of social media strategy. Amelia Wilkinson, MSc Physiotherapy (pre-reg), MSc Dance Science, BA (Hons) Sociology, APPI certified Pilates Instructor Enhancing Silver Swans® Provision Amelia originally trained as a dancer at The Royal Ballet School and is now a dance science educator, physiotherapist and Pilates instructor. Her expertise in health and wellbeing is informed by both her dance for health and physiotherapy research. Most recently she examined community dwelling stroke survivors’ perceptions of upper limb dysfunction and its impact on quality of life. She currently works as a Health and Performance Enhancement Tutor across two Centre for Advanced Training programmes and delivers dance science CPD courses across the UK and internationally for the RAD. Caroline Palmer, ARAD (Dip. PDTC) Analysing Discovering Repertoire Choreographic Style with Benesh Notation Caroline trained in classical ballet in London with Andrew Hardie and Maria Fay. She danced professionally for 10 years mainly with the Deutsche Opera in Dusseldorf. In 1979 Caroline retrained as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Dance and subsequently taught on the degree course at Laban, London. -

PRESS RELEASE FOURTH ROUND OF SMALL GRANTS ANNOUNCED BY THE THEATRES TRUST 8am, 29 January 2014, London, UK The Theatres Trust is pleased to announce its fourth round of small capital grants to theatres across the nation. Awards are made to five community theatres for projects that will make important capital improvements, including one of the rarest surviving music halls, Hoxton Hall, and the community-owned and volunteer-run Beccles Public Hall & Theatre. Grants have been awarded to: Alnwick Playhouse: This cultural hub in Northumberland receives £5,000 towards the ‘Alnwick Playhouse & Community Arts Centre Roof Repairs’ project to enable it to carry out urgent remedial repairs and protect the fabric of the building. Beccles Public Hall & Theatre: It receives £5,000 towards an ‘Improving Access to the Stage’ project, removing part of a side wall to give better access to the stage, and remedial works to remodel the roof as part of a larger programme of renovation and improvement works. Hoxton Hall, London: This rare Grade II* listed music hall in Hackney, East London, receives £5,000 towards its ‘Conservation, Restoration and Modernisation’ project to carry out structural and strengthening works to its upper balcony which will enable it to create four new and accessible performance formats. Tara Arts: London’s first Asian-led theatre, based in Wandsworth, receives £5,000 towards the installation of a set of internal double-leaf, fire-proof acoustic doors for its new auditorium as part of the ‘Tara Theatre Renovation Project’. Yvonne Arnaud Theatre: Guildford’s Grade II listed theatre receives £5,000 towards the ‘Refurbishment and Installation of Automatic Sliding Doors’ to improve accessibility through upgrading the main entrance to the theatre and the entrance to the auditorium. -

OfcomOfcom Broadcast Preliminary and On Demand View Bulletin Published 17 September 2020 Britain’s Got Talent Type of case Broadcast Standards Outcome Not Pursued Service ITV Date & time 5 September 2020, 20:00 Category Protection of children/generally accepted standards/dangerous behaviour/due impartiality Summary This programme included a performance by the British dance group Diversity which represented the events of 2020, including the Coronavirus pandemic and global anti-racism protests. We concluded that the programme did not raise issues which warranted investigation under the Broadcasting Code. Ofcom received approximately 24,5001 complaints about the above programme. Complainants outlined a range of concerns about Diversity’s performance, including that the themes of violence and racism were inappropriate for family viewing, that it expressed support for the political organisation ‘Black Lives Matter’ and that it was racist towards White people. Ofcom also received a number of messages of support and praise for the performance. Ofcom has assessed this programme against the relevant rules in the Broadcasting Code (“the Code”). Our assessment is that this programme did not raise any issues which warranted investigation. In our view, Diversity’s performance was an artistic expression of topical social issues and did not contain any content which was racist, unsuitably violent or otherwise inappropriate in the context of this programme. BAME diversity in the performing arts has once again been high on the agenda this year, from the runaway success of Hamilton on Broadway to the latest announcement from Arts Council England of £4.6 million to boost diversity. Very often the discussion is focussed on increasing the representation of diverse ethnicities on stage and this is crucially important. However, I’ve been acutely aware that one of the biggest issues is the lack of trained diverse talent coming through. Casting directors and theatre producers alike often complain that they’d like to cast more Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic performers but that they don’t get enough turning up to audition. Inspired by some of the success stories coming out of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation’s scholarship programme – such as Emmanuel Kojo who is interviewed in these pages – the Foundation decided to commission this " I PASSIONATELY research. The aim was to come up with some positive recommendations that BELIEVE THAT can be adopted by people involved at every stage of the talent pipeline from THE STAGE NEEDS school to stage. TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF THE UK I passionately believe that the stage needs to reflect the diversity of the POPULATION OR IT UK population or it risks becoming side-lined. -

Alma’s extraordinary soulful voice and sharply observed lyrics hit somewhere between Sia and Amy Winehouse. Perhaps understandable the world wants to know where and the how the 22-year-old Finnish powerhouse (currently working with MNEK, Rudimental, Charlie XCX, Sub Focus, Tove Lo, Justin Tranter and 2 Inch Punch) began her career in music. “I don’t think I ever really started,” Alma recalls. “It’s just when I was little, I understood that singing made me feel things. It made me feel safe, it made me feel good, it made me feel better. It’s how I’ve survived everything, cliché as that sounds.” Alma needn’t worry about clichés: with her long, electric-neon hair, baggy punk attire and magnetic attitude she is everything but the stereotypical pop princess. “She looks like a cybergoth reimagining of a young Adele and sounds like Beth Ditto had she been raised on tropical house,” The Observer wrote recently - they hit the nail on the head. Growing up between Helsinki in the winter and Lapland in the summer, Alma sang constantly. “If I was happy, if I was sad, if I was walking alone in the dark and a bit scared,” she says. “It made me feel like I had a shelter around me.” Singing was her secret security blanket —until one summer when her family were driving north for the season. She told her parents that she wanted to sing for them, and they imagined they were in for a rendition of something by the Spice Girls or Destiny’s Child. -
