Breaking Down Borders and Bridging Barriers: Iranian Taziyeh Theatre Khosrow Shahriari A thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Media, Film and Theatre University of New South Wales July 2006 ABSTRACT In the twentieth century, Western theatre practitioners, aware of the gap between actor and spectator and the barrier between the stage and the auditorium, experimented with ways to bridge this gap and cross barriers, which in the western theatrical tradition have been ignored over the centuries. Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Piscator, Brecht, Grotowski, and more recently Peter Brook are only a few of the figures who tried to engage spectators and enable them to participate more fully in the play. Yet in Iran there has existed for over three centuries a form of theatre which, thanks to its unique method of approaching reality, creates precise moments in which the worlds of the actor and the spectator come together in perfect unity. It is called ‘taziyeh’, and the aim of this thesis is to offer a comprehensive account of this complex and sophisticated theatre. The thesis examines taziyeh through the accounts of eyewitnesses, and explores taziyeh’s method of acting, its form, concepts, the aims of each performance, its sources and origins, and the evolution of this Iranian phenomenon from its emergence in the tenth century. Developed from the philosophical point of view of Iranian mysticism on the one hand, and annual mourning ceremonies with ancient roots on the other, taziyeh has been performed by hundreds of different professional groups for more than three hundred years. -

To the memory of my brother Ali Abstract This study aims at investigating the representations of Persia in a number of canonical and non-canonical texts in English literature. The theoretical framework comes from Edward Said’s analysis of orientalism. It is argued that the case of Persia instances the heterogeneous and striated character of orientalism (‘representations’ rather than ‘representation’ in the title). It is shown that while a number of relatively similar set of motifs and topoi, mainly derived from classical tradition and contemporary travel writing, circulate in the works of the three Renaissance authors included (Spenser, Marlowe, Milton), they are differently inflected and serve different thematic and ideological purposes. It is also suggested that the somewhat nascent orientalism of these authors develops into a more fully-fledged one in Thomas Moore’s Lalla Rookh where a basically Romantic notion of Persia as an exotic land is overridden by its construction as a realm fallen to foreign domination and cultural dispossession so as to displace the poet’s radical political views. -

Remembering the Ottomans’ life of pleasure and Persians’ round-the-clock life of mourning, I decried my bad luck [at having been born in Persia]. (translation by Esmaeil Haddadian Moghaddam) Much as the traditional picaresque hero is supposed to dissect society from below, here the critique works through comparison. Constantinople, where Hajji Baba has just arrived, offers all things good; Persia, from whence he has come, suffers from all things bad. -

Occidentalist Perceptions of European Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Persian Travel Diaries In the midst of Europe’s nineteenth-century industrial revolution, four men embarked on separate journeys to the wondrous Farangestan – a land of fascinating objects, mysterious technologies, heavenly women, and magical spaces. Determined to learn the secret of Farangestan’s advancements, the travelers kept detailed records of their observations. These diaries mapped an aspirational path to progress for curious Iranian audiences who were eager to change the course of history. Two hundred years later, Travels in Farangi space unpacks these writings to reveal a challenging new interpreta- tion of Iran’s experience of modernity. This book opens the Persian travelers’ long-forgotten suitcases, and ana- lyzes the descriptions contained within to gain insight into Occidentalist perspectives on modern Europe. By carefully tracing the physical and men- tal journeys of these travelers, the book paints a picture of European archi- tecture that is nothing like what one would expect. Vahid Vahdat is an architect, urban designer, and historian of architecture and urban form. His primary field of research is the theory and history of modern architecture and urban space, with an emphasis on non-Western experiences of modernity. List of British Consular Officials in the Ottoman Empire and its former territories, from the sixteenth century to about 1860 July 2011 Introduction The following list has grown from a set of rough notes compiled by David Wilson while he was helping to catalogue the papers of Sir John Elijah Blunt at the University of Birmingham. The original aim was simply to identify people mentioned in those papers, but it soon became obvious that they were connected by a complicated network of family relationships extending over several generations. A more detailed account of those most closely connected with the Blunt family is being prepared separately, but it is hoped this draft list may be useful for people researching other families or particular consulates, since there does not appear to be a single reliable source of information with such a wide coverage. In preparing this list, it was found that many of the sources are unreliable, incomplete or contradictory; this led to the adoption of a format which tries to show clearly where each piece of information came from. This does produce a rather cluttered effect, with a lot of brackets, but it makes it simple to remove redundant material or insert new as the project develops. Quite a lot of material from earlier drafts has already been removed as the picture became clearer. The aim has been to include all appointments from the foundation of the Levant Company in 1581 up to 1 Jan 1860, although some later appointments are also listed. The end point was chosen as being a time after the Crimean War when the Levant Consular Service had more or less settled down after the various upheavals that followed the transfer from the Levant Company to the Foreign Office. -

This study traces the multiple mediating voices, some editorial, some translational, that enabled a critical modernity to move across worlds.
