An Interview with Sensei Toshihiro Oshiro Oshiro Toshihiro: The Way of Yamanni-ryu by Dong Tran Dong Tran: When and where were you born? Toshihiro Oshiro: I was born May 1st, 1949 in Haneji, Okinawa, Japan. DT: When did you begin training in karate? Did your youth revolve around martial arts? TO: I started when I was sixteen. But in actuality, when I was eight or nine in elementary school my sempai already taught me karate and bojutsu. So you can say I already began at age eight. But it's not similar to the way you practice in the dojo today; it's more like kids playing baseball or basketball, that kind of thing. DT: Was it called Shorin-ryu then? TO: No. I wish I could remember the kata they taught me. It was a mixture of Pinan and Naihanchi katas but I don't know who made that kata. After WWII many Okinawan karate practitioners were prisoners of war and one of the stockades was near Haneji so I guess one of them taught karate to our town people. DT: Who was your first karate sensei? Did you also train with Nagamine Shoshin sensei? Did you teach at his dojo? TO: My first and main karate sensei was Shima Masao sensei. One year after I joined his dojo, he recommended that I go train at the hombu (HQ) dojo. When I made shodan I became assistant instructor and then instructor. But leading a class is not the same thing as teaching. They are two entirely different things! Shima sensei taught me from the Fukyu gata to Chinto. -
The Development of Japanese Cotton Weaving Industry in Edo Period
Takeshi Abe Osaka University [email protected] The Development of Japanese Cotton Weaving Industry in Edo Period Introduction Prior to the Japanese industrialization which began in the late 1880s, manufacturing such as weaving, silk reeling, brewery, and the related commerce had already highly developed around the farming villages in the Edo period (1603-1868). We have many Japanese books and articles that argued about the Japanese manufacturing in the period, especially after the latter half of 18th century1. However, most of them argue about only one industry at a specific narrow area, and neglected the development of the industry in the whole Japan. In addition, such basic facts as the starting period of the respective local industries, the transition of their production, and so on, are not necessarily known, although the literature well elucidated the differences of production forms (i.e., putting-out or manufactory). There were lots of manufacturing industries in the Edo period. Table 1 shows the production values of the important industries in 1874, which reflect the approximate situation at the end of the Edo period. According to this table, brewery and weaving were most important, and in weaving, cotton and silk were overwhelming. This paper focuses on the cotton weaving industry, and confirms quantitatively the transition of production volumes, further considering about some aspects of its development all over Japan. 1 Ichikawa (1958) is an excellent survey about them. 1 1. Basic Data In the Edo period, with the penetration of market economy, cotton cloth, which was the material of popular kimono and the other wear, came to be woven in the many local areas, closely related to the production of raw cotton and hand-spun yarn. -
Kobudo Weapons Rules
KBC Kobudo Competition Rules & Divisions ARTICLE 1: KOBUDO COMPETITION AREA 1. Must be of suitable size to allow Kata to be performed without restriction. 2. Kumite tatami flooring is acceptable but hardwood flooring is preferred. ARTICLE 2: OFFICIAL DRESS REFEREES 1. Referees and Judges must wear the official uniform designated by the Referee Council. This uniform must be worn at all tournaments and courses. 2. The official uniform will be usually be the same as described in the WKF rules. COMPETITORS 1. Competitors may wear a traditional white uniform as in Karate competition or traditional black uniform or a combination of black top-white bottom or black bottom-white top. 2. Hakama may not be worn except in the Kobudo Demo Division. 3. Sleeves may be rolled up for Sai performance. ARTICLE 3: JUDGING PANEL 1. A judging panel of specifically trained Kobudo Judges will be appointed by the KBC Officials Committee. 2. Competitors will perform Kata chosen from the list of recognized Kobudo Kata as referenced in Article 8. 3. Preferably, the panel of Judges will include those representing the different Kobudo Ryuha 4. The Judging Panel will consist of one Head Judge and either four or two corner judges (depending on availability). ARTICLE 4: ORGANIZATION OF THE COMPETITION AND DIVISIONS 1. Kobudo competitors shall compete in the age and skill divisions as described below for Regular Weapons (Bo, Eku, Sai, Tonfa): 9 & Under Novice / Intermediate / Advanced 10-13 Novice / Intermediate / Advanced 14-17 Novice / Intermediate 14-17 Advanced 18 & Over Novice / Intermediate 18 & Over Advanced 17 & Under Black 18 & Over Black. -

Himeji – (2 Hours) Dinner and Overnight in Himeji
Travelling the path of Musashi *Note: This itinerary doesn’t follow Musashi’s life in chronological order due to travel logistics. It does however, begin and end at his place of birth and death. The trip begins with a flight to Osaka, Japan. Depending on when flights arrive (day or evening) will dictate on which day the true itinerary begins. Day 1: Mimasaka Visit Musashi museum/shrine; believe to be the birthplace of Musashi. (About an hour visit) Depart Osaka by train [Japan Railways Limited Express operates a train from Osaka to Mimasaka, every 4 hours. Tickets cost $30 - $45 and the journey takes 1 h 37 min.] It is ten minutes on foot from Chizu railroad Miyamoto Musashi Station. Taxi to Hirafuku – 30 min ride from Mimasaka to Hyogo Sayo-cho in Hirafuku. At the age of 13 years old, Musashi challenged Kihei Arima who practiced Katori Shinto Ryu. Musashi attacked with a staff, and Kihei defended with a Wakizashi. Masashi threw Kihei to the ground with his hands, and then beat him to death as he tried to get up. Train to Himeji – (2 hours) dinner and overnight in Himeji Day 2: Himeji In his 30’s; Musashi helped in the construction of Akashi Castle and helped organize the layout of the town of Himeji. During his stay, he taught martial arts, particularly kenjutsu and shuriken throwing, and he perfected his Enmei-ryu kenjutsu style. Visit castle and local sites. Train to Sekigahara 2.5 hours. (0vernight in Sekigahara town) Day 3: Battle of Sekigahara Sekigahara was the biggest, the bloodiest, the most violent and most important of all samurai battles, fought between the factions of a nation divided in two, East and West. -

Pressure Points for Self-Defense and Healing Laura Copenhaver Introduction A knowledge of the ancient Asian healing arts can be incredibly beneficial to a martial artist for both fighting and healing. An understanding of where the body is most susceptible to pain can give your techniques—be they holds, chokes, or strikes—an added impact. In addition, pressure point attacks impair the ability of your opponent and so give you a strong advantage. A knowledge of pressure points can also allow you to take care of your own injuries and the injuries of the people you train with. Familiarity and experience with these healing practices will make you a more valuable member of your dojo and a more fearsome opponent. This paper will discussing the origin of pressure point techniques and their applications in both healing and self-defense. Origins Five thousand years ago in China, when weapons consisted of stones, spears, axes and arrows, a curious discovery was made. Soldiers reported that when they were struck during battle in certain areas of their bodies, life long illnesses and maladies would suddenly vanish.1 This relationship between trauma 197 Pressure Points for Self-Defense and Healing and recovery helped lay the groundwork for the meridian based understanding of the body. Through trial and error, physicians of the time charted the points on the body that seemed to stimulate healing, relieve pain and regulate energy. A holistic method of hands-on healing then grew from this knowledge. Similar practices could also be found in India at around the same time, and some time later, in Japan. -

Original scientific paper Received: 27 January 2014 Accepted: 14 March 2014 DOI: 10.15176/vol51no109 UDK 796.8(520) Ritual Formalism and the Intangible Body of the Japanese Koryū Budō Culture LEO RAFOLT Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb koryū budō gendai budō The paper presents an analysis of the interrelationkoryū bud betweenō the traditional Japanese martial arts culture ( ) and its modern correspondents ( ). The analysis is based on the idea of inscribing on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, as Japan’s oldest martialkoryū cultural asset. Initial proposals to do so were put forward in the last ten years by some Japanese martial arts organizations, budōe.g. Nippon Budokan, especially by its legacy division. The paper interprets the ritual-like and pattern-like formalism of the Japanese modern and traditional legacy, especially in the context ofbud “Japaneseō nationalist history” after the Meiji Restoration. Emphasis is therefore put on the structures of movements that pre-exist in the ritual practices of the classical culture and are still present in modern martial arts systems, because of their hereditary and pre-formalized performativity. THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE YOSHUKAN KARATE ASSOCIATION Winter 2020 SENSEI DOMETRICH PROMOTED TO 9TH DAN, HANSHI GRADE Sensei Devorah Dometrich, Chief Instructor of the RYU KYU KOBUDO HOZON SHINKOKAI (Okinawan Weapons Preservation Society) has been promoted to 9th Dan, Hanshi (Grand Master grade) by her group of 29 Shibu (Senior Students). Sensei Dometrich has devoted her life to studying and teaching the ancient okinawan weapons comprised of: Bo; Tekko; Nunchaku; Sai; Tonfa; Tinbe; Eku; and Kama. Sensei has developed a large community of senior teachers in three countries and spends a tremendous amount of time each year driving across North America and promoting her art.
