Welcome to Westerly’s Downtown Hoedown, Westerly’s 24th annual auction extravaganza. History says that the Westerly Auction event is not to be missed, and this year is going to be no different!

We are fortunate that auction co-chairs, Nicole Nguyen and Amy Venner-Hamdi have led the efforts this year! Their organization and management of the myriad of details surrounding an event like this is impeccable. Their countless hours of service have resulted in a well- attended event and hugely successful gift collection that will benefit our children. Their efforts have been supported by your item donations, and by many other volunteers, working in concert with the Advancement Office, Jessica Ngo, Director of Advancement, and Toni DiNapoli, Advancement Associate. All of your collective efforts have made this wonderful evening possible.

This annual event is so important for the School on many levels. First, it allows our community members to celebrate all that is wonderful about Westerly and helps strengthen our community bonds. Second, your generous financial support assists our students and the programming that is so essential to their education.

MARK DRILLING, STOKES AUCTION GROUP, AUCTIONEER Mark Drilling is our auctioneer for this year’s Downtown Hoedown! Mark’s enthusiasm, talent and sense of humor grabs everyone’s attention. After having been involved in the auction profession as a young man, Mark attended the Western College of Auctioneering to become an auctioneer. He has been serving the nonprofit community since 1997 and is a member of the National Auctioneers Association, the AAA and sits on the board of the Active Auctioneers Foundation.

Whether he’s raising money for a school, medical research or civic organizations, Mark truly feels he’s making a difference and that he has the best job in the world. While Mark finds it difficult to pick a favorite event, he does have a special place in his heart for charities benefiting children and the environment.

DANI L’WREN, EVENT DJ A Renaissance woman, who goes by the stage name of Dani L’Wren is a powerhouse who can set any stage on fire with her captivating talent and electric performance. Her passion for combining music, dance, and interactive artistic production into every show with a twist of her own finesse creates an unforgettable experience.

Dani was inspired to begin DJing when she watched DJs take the stage during the Made in America festival. She was selected amidst thousands of other DJ competitors as one of 30 finalists to compete in the Your Shot USA 2015 DJ Competition on VEVO. Having the opportunity to perform around the world from Toronto to Japan greatly influences Dani’s musical selection, artistic expression, and performance. Dani loves to curate a specific vibe and electric experience.

ASHLEY JONES AND NATHAN ORTIZ, DANCERS

Ashley L. Jones Ashley Jones’ primary training was under the tutelage of Anthony & Terri Sellars at Orange County Dance Center where she rose to principal ballerina with Ballet Repertory Theatre. Ashley has both performed and choreographed for Good Day LA, Marriott, Robbins Brothers, and numerous other corporate clients as well as being named one of Long Beach’s 30 under 30 performing artists. She is the founding instructor of Segerstrom Center for the Arts Dance for Disabilities School and recently became adaptive dance certified through Boston Ballet. In addition, Ashley currently serves as the jazz company director for the School of Dance and Music, the Dance Program Director of Marina High School, and dances professionally for Kenneth Walker Dance Project and Contempo Ballet.

Nathan Ortiz Nathan Ortiz is a So Cal native who has performed with the Kenneth Walker Dance Project, a contemporary ballet company, for the past 6 years. Over the years, Nathan has been fortunate to become affiliated with modern dance companies in So Cal, which include Funderburk Dance Artists, Louise Reichlin & Dancers, No Strings Attached, Freshwater Dance Collective, Pasadena Civic Ballet, and Nanette Brodie Dance Theater. He continues to focus on Dance Education, particularly for high school students, and has taken residencies at public schools throughout the LA County area. Nathan is currently a candidate for Master of Fine Arts programs at Arizona State University, California University of the Arts, and University of California, Riverside.

1 4 Days & 3 Nights Ranch Experience near Sacramento, CA for 16 Welcome to Fourteen Oaks, a place where you can fill your hours with activities or simply renew your spirit. It is centrally located in Northern California, about one and a half hours drive from the Sacramento Airport, and 20 minutes north of Marysville, in the city of Bangor.

The original ranch house, 2560 Sq. Ft., has four bedrooms and three baths and was built in 1998. The guesthouse, adjacent to the main house, 1100 Sq. Ft. consists of four bedroom/bath suites and was completed in 2012.

The open floor plan of the main house includes a living room, family room, dining room, and kitchen with a dining nook. The living areas are furnished with over-stuffed sofas, creating a mood for complete relaxation. The dining room displays a large wooden table that seats 12-14. The fully equipped kitchen is large and is the hub of the ranch. The family room has a TV, computer and a stereo system. The four themed bedrooms have queen sized beds and are tastefully decorated; reflecting the gold rush era which creates a fun sense of whimsy. The guest house has 4 individual themed suites and extends the same spirit.

The outdoor dining area can accommodate 12-14. There is large BBQ, stone fire pit and also plenty of extra seating. Shuffleboard, horseshoes, exotic animals (zebras and buffalos!), skeet shooting and archery on site.

The 220 acre working cattle ranch has rolling hills, oak trees and exotic animal pastures. The views are not to be believed and can be enjoyed from both inside and outside the home. 14 Downtown Hoedown 2018 6 How Much Is That Puppy In the Window? As many of you know, we went on a search for an auction puppy. In our auction, we have been switch- ing off having puppies from breeders and shelters. This year our puppy is from a breeder. We would like to introduce “Bandit”, a loyal and incredibly sweet, classic Sheepadoodle who will grow to about 50 pounds and 22 inches tall.

Sheepadoodles are a wonderful cross between a Standard Poodle and an Old English Sheepdog. The Sheepadoodle is a willing and easily trainable student. He’s both a clown and a scholar who will keep you laughing at his shenanigans and amazed at his intelligence. Our Fund-an-Item this year is mission-driven, focusing on innovation, leadership, and exploration. We are excited about these enhancements to our student programs.

Professional Development- RULER Program Social emotional learning is a critical component of our school’s mission. This year we have been developing a robust and meaningful social emotional learning program as part of our K-8 curriculum. Throughout the fall, our administration and faculty researched and engaged in professional development to examine how we approach and teach social emotional learning. Classroom practices, school policies, and relationships with our families and community have essential components as we build our comprehensive program. We are pleased to announce that as part of this ongoing work, Westerly School will be adopting RULER, a comprehensive curriculum designed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, as our social emotional anchor program. RULER is an acronym that stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. This approach dovetails with our educational philoso- phy here at Westerly, and fits well with our K-8 developmental needs. Our administration and faculty are looking forward to collaborating to ensure a successful implementation of the curriculum for the 2018-2019 school year. Your contributions will go towards training our faculty and resources to be able to implement this important program for our students’ social emotional learning.

Garden and Sustainability The Westerly Garden started in 2011 with enthusiastic parents, excited kids and teachers, and a few garden beds. We now have a thriving Garden Club and Ground Ed classes in which students are ap- plying math and science skills to grow vegetables and fruits and learning about sustainability. The new classroom spaces provided us a wonderful opportunity to expand our garden area and design a permanent framework for Westerly. We envision the garden as a place for all of the Westerly community to visit and enjoy. The Garden committee and Administrative Team has collaborated for years drawing up a master plan.
