Larry Green, state labor market analyst who monitors the employment picture in several Southeast Tennessee counties, including Bradley, said the “pleasantly surprising” drop in April’s rate came even as construction saw a slight dip. So are its numbers. None know this heartbreaking fact more than the loved ones of the Wfallen soldier. It is he, or she, whom we honor today. It is Memorial Day, a time to reflect on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of American ideals like life, liber- ty and expression — freedoms that are privileges in our democ- racy yet not such a gift in the eyes of those who rule through oppression and who choose to intimidate by aggression. Of the thousands of communities whose heartstrings entwine the collective conscience of the nation, we believe the residents of Cleveland and Bradley County continue to cling to humane values like commemorating heroism while bowing our heads in memory of those who have given so much. As done in recent editions, we reflect on a Memorial Day address delivered May 31, 2004, in Ashland, Ohio, at the com- munity’s sprawling cemetery. Speaker Peter W. Schramm told a large crowd, “We have come here to remember and honor those who have done their duty, as God allowed them to see that duty.” To serve as a soldier in today’s America is a choice. To die as a soldier in today’s America is a personal testament, one that tells a story of courage, commitment and camaraderie among those who share a common vision. LOOKING Its telling has come often. BACK Its telling, sadly, will be repeated. Some interesting facts In his words 13 years ago, Schramm spoke to the realities of war, its “brutal facts” as he called them. Forget about the negative When people call themselves stupid, ugly or anything nega- tive, it's holding them back. In your mind, you think that you can't do this or that. Hope is and will be your best friend, who keeps pushing you for- ward. People don't tend to try whenever they tell themselves they can't do it. They don’t learn how to do what they want to achieve and lose moti- vation. I am sure that every- body, at one point in their lives, will or has laid in bed telling themselves that they aren't good enough. Often, this feeling comes from the insults of the per- son's peers or failure. Nowadays, people don’t have the mindset of, "If you once fail, try again" because people will always tell them they can't do it and make them feel hor- rible after they fail once. Failure is completely okay, it's teaching you a way to not do something, and maybe even do something else. This isn’t becoming known to the youth Banner photo, SARALYN NORKUS Banner photo, SARALYN NORKUS of today. I am so much more than they think I am, and I was inspired to try to be better than myself every day. By doing this, you can have more positivity in your life, better yourself and the people around you, and avoid serious illnesses like depression and anxiety. When you call yourself these names, you are pulling more negativity in your life which stunts production, happiness, and overall healthiness. You have to be confident if you wish to have a joyous life. By being confident in yourself, you can achieve so much more than you think you can. My art teacher, Mr. Broadnax, always tells us to never say "I can't do” but rather say "It's hard to do.” People in that classroom absolutely took a leap of improvement in their drawing skills, and one of the reasons they were able to do that is because of the positive aura in the class. Those who tell themselves that they can do things have a better chance of doing it. This mindset will not develop overnight, and you may have good days and bad days. However, it's better than always telling yourself you can't do something. If you work hard, then eventually you Banner photo, SARALYN NORKUS can achieve your goals, no matter what they are. CLEVELAND MIDDLE SCHOOL students enjoyed ‘battling’ it out in Zorb balls.
