Very readable, youthful Turgenev romantic/political novelBy A CustomerA very readable translation, although more can be gained with an elementary level of French to catch some of the untranslated idiomatic phrases of the faux aristocracy. This short novel is not as sentimental or melancholy as "Spring Torrents" or "First Love," and perhaps lacks the polish of his best-known work "Fathers and Sons," but the mixture of the setting (Baden Baden, Germany)with the characters from not only Russia, but also France, Germany et al., with a familiar plot device (love triangle) makes for not only an interesting love story but also an intriguing glance at the political history of Russia and western Europe. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a more complete understanding of Turgenev's works,the Russian novel in general, and the late 19th Century European literature. Personally, I have enjoyed all of Turgenev's novels and would recommend any of them. If you are new to Turgenev, however, I would definitely recommend starting with "Fathers and Sons." All of Turgenev's novels combined make for less reading than say Tolstoy's "War and Peace" or Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." Russians in Baden-BadenBy A reader"Smoke," a novel mainly set among wealthy Russians travelling abroad, is not without its problems. The story takes a while to get under way, and Turgenev's effort to fit the plot developments into the broader issue of Westernization in Russia at times places a strain on the narrative.However, a scene in chapter 26 (which gives the book its name) features one of the loveliest passages I have yet encountered in literature. It is a brief passage in which Litvinov, the main character, returning to Russia with his spirit crushed by the circumstances of his ill-fated trip to Baden-Baden, has a reverie prompted by the sight of the smoke he sees outside the train window. As is often the case with Turgenev's writing, it is a simple scene but one laden with humanity and warmth.(BTW: It is also worthwhile to examine this book in connection with Leonid Tsypkin's "Summer in Baden-Baden" which discusses the meeting there between Turgenev and Dostoevsky.)16 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Where's the Fire?By A CustomerTurgenev devotees will be pleased to find a copy of this most seldom reissued and perhaps least known of his novels. Its tidy paperback sheath, studded with sepia snapshots from the historical time it depicts, makes a fine outer garment for the spare and slender frame of a tale we find within. For, at first glance, "Smoke" will not appear to have many of the winning features which normally draw readers into Turgenev's fictional realms and keep them there, so happily immured: absent are the legendary lyrical descriptions of the Russian countryside and its owners to be found in such novels as "Rudin" and "Home of the Gentry," and missing are the complex character development and more involved political reflections which are hallmarks of the somewhat lesser yet still impressive "On the Eve." And the discoverer of "Smoke" will be sorely disappointed should she or he hope to find in this work something to satisfy the voracious literary appetite engendered by the sumptuous meal which "Fathers and Children" invariably is. "Smoke," like "Virgin Soil" which immediately followed it, has no dearth of defects. Its plot moves too swiftly, for example, giving no time for characters to change and events to move in credible ways. Its tone is often mean-spirited and sour. Practically no one likeable, aside, perhaps, from the unhappy Tatyana, appears in its pages. Its plot and even dialogue are too often puzzlingly predictable. Yet, for all its lacks, "Smoke" does accomplish the astonishing novelistic miracle, achieved by so few: the creation of two characters, in Irina Ratmirov and Grigory Litvinov, who are utterly unforgettable. Unsavory from first bite to final slurp, an encounter with them will leave the reader longing for some equally ferocious flavor as purgative to the palate. No small feat! Though to a 21st century American ear, this translation will sound quaintly Victorian (Constance Garnett, whose translating career death has not hurt one little bit) and cozily English (check out curiosities like "phiz" and "fly"), it is well-worth not only buying but reading. What better way, really, to point out the always-to-be-remembered truth that even immortals like the divine Turgenev were not continually engaged in the manufacture of masterpieces. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy. Enthusiasts of strong social and political commentary couched in novel format will appreciate this story of European community roots and changes, reflected both in Russian politics and in the lives of two individuals who find philosophies diverging.     A Supervised Learning Approach Towards Profiling the Preservation of Authorial Style in Literary Translations Gerard Lynch Centre for Applied Data Analytics Research University College Dublin Ireland [email protected] Abstract Recently there has been growing interest in the application of approaches from the text classi- fication literature to fine-grained problems of textual stylometry. This paper seeks to answer a question which has concerned the translation studies community: how does a literary transla- tor’s style vary across their translations of different authors? This study focuses on the works of Constance Garnett, one of the most prolific English-language translators of Russian literature, and uses supervised learning approaches to analyse her translations of three well-known Rus- sian authors, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dosteyevsky and Anton Chekhov. This analysis seeks to identify common linguistic patterns which hold for all of the translations from the same author. Based on the experimental results, it is ascertained that both document-level metrics and n-gram features prove useful for distinguishing between authorial contributions in our translation corpus and their individual efficacy increases further when these two feature types are combined, result- ing in classification accuracy of greater than 90 % on the task of predicting the original author of a textual segment using a Support Vector Machine classifier. The ratio of nouns and pronouns to total tokens are identified as distinguishing features in the document metrics space, along with occurrences of common adverbs and reporting verbs from the collection of n-gram features. 1 Introduction The application of supervised learning technologies to textual data from the humanities in order to shed light on stylometric questions has become more popular of late.

Copyright by Muhammad Ali 2021 Abstract This thesis examines the representation of nihilism in antinihilist and radical novels written in post-emancipation Tsarist Russia, between 1861 and 1881. During this period, nihilism emerged as a social and political phenomenon and contributed not only to the emerging differences between the generation of the “superfluous men” (1840s) and of the prominent literary critics (1860s), but also to the radicalization of a segment of society. As a result, it was actively discussed and debated in most of the literature produced in this period. I have limited my analysis to three of the maJor works written during this time: Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons, Nikolai Chernyshevsky's What Is To Be Done?, and Fyodor Dostoevsky's Demons. He was born in Orel, one hundred miles south of Moscow, in 1818. He had a privileged background, educated at home by tutors, and went on to the best of University educations—Moscow, St. Petersburg, Berlin. The influence of German philosophers, like Hegel, marked him strongly, and he soon returned to Russia, eager to share his knowledge of Hegel with Russian students. In l841 he returned to Russia, where he found himself increasingly swept up into literary circles. Despite intense opposition from within his family, especially from his mother, Turgenev persisted in devoting himself to his writing. Turgenev’s first literary successes were his ‘Sportsman’s Sketches,’ in which he made successful literature out of his love of hunting. For several years he lived and worked in Paris, until returning to a Russia which was not especially congenial to him. Significant literary figures, like Dostoyevsky, were in exile, and he himself was kept under close police surveillance. As his reputation grew, and his desire to travel out of his oppressive country intensified, Turgenev returned to Europe, in search both of spiritual alliances, and of relief, at a variety of spas, from what he was convinced was his increasingly bad health.

    Chapter Seven Virgin Soil 7.1 Introduction In Turgenev criticism, Virgin Soil (Нoвь - 1877) has met a similar fate to that of Smoke. It is generally regarded as an unsuccessful work that is not truly representative of Turgenev’s abilities as an author. As soon as it appeared, the work was adversely criticized both for its socio-political message and for its supposed lack of artistic value. In general, the critics maintained that Turgenev had long since lost touch with Russian reality, and was repeating himself without adding any insights that were relevant to the time at which he was writing (PSS XII, 526-7). Furthermore, they considered the general atmosphere and characterization to be pale and uninspired (idem 529). This verdict has, by and large, continued over time. That Turgenev’s powers had expired by the time he came to write Virgin Soil has become a commonplace. His protracted stay outside Russia, during which he supposedly lost contact with the details of Russian reality, is often given as a reason for the novel’s failure, but there is also the idea that Turgenev was unable to keep up with developments in the Russian novel itself – that the historical, epic style of Tolstoj, and Dostoevskij’s interest in psychological analysis, drew the readers away from the more conservative schemes that Turgenev continued to use.101 Recent researchers have issued similarly negative judgements. Freeborn, for example, holds that Turgenev lacked knowledge of the milieu he was describing, not only because he lived outside Russia but also because he was depicting an environment that was different from the circles of gentry to which he belonged.

It was the book in which many English readers were destined to make his acquaintance about a generation ago, and the effect of it was, like Swinburne's Songs Before Sunrise, Mazzini's Duties of Man, and other congenial documents, to break up the insular confines in which they had been reared and to enlarge their new horizon. Afterwards they went on to read Tolstoi, and Turgenev's powerful and antipathetic fellow-novelist, Dostoievsky, and many other Russian writers: but as he was the greatest artist of them all, his individual revelation of his country's predicament did not lose its effect.
