Permeability of rosmarinic acid in Prunella vulgaris and ursolic acid in Salvia officinalis extracts across Caco-2 cell monolayers Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Rosmarinic acid (RA), a caffeic ca id-related compound found in high concentrations in Prunella vulgaris (self- heal), and ursolic acid (UA), a pentacyclic triterpene acid concentrated in Salvia officinalis (sage), have been traditionally used to treat inflammation in the mouth, and may also be beneficial for gastrointestinal health in general. Aim of the study To investigate the permeabilities of RA nda UA as pure compounds and in Prunella vulgaris and Salvia officinalis ethanol extracts across human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell monolayers. Materials and methods The permeabilities and phase II biotransformation of RA nda UA as pure compounds and in herbal extracts were compared using Caco-2 cells with HPLC detection. Results −6 The ppa arent permeability coefficient (Papp) for RA nda RA in Prunella vulgaris extracts was 0.2 ± 0.05 × 10 −6 cm/s, significantly increased to 0.9 ± 0.2 × 10 cm/s after β-glucuronidase/sulfatase treatment. Papp for UA and UA in Salvia officinalis extract was 2.7 ± 0.3 × 10−6 cm/s and 2.3 ± 0.5 × 10−6 cm/s before and after β- glucuronidase/sulfatase treatment, respectively. Neither compound was affected in permeability by the herbal extract matrix. Conclusion RA nda UA in herbal extracts had similar uptake as that found using the pure compounds, which may simplify the prediction of compound efficacy, but the apparent lack of intestinal glucuronidation/sulfation of UA is likely to further enhance the bioavailability of that compound compared with RA. However, understanding the evolution of these phenomena in the order, and clarifying borders of and relationships among lamialean families, has been hindered by largely unresolved trees in the past. Results: Our analysis of the rapidly evolving trnK/matK, trnL-F and rps16 chloroplast regions enabled us to infer more precise phylogenetic hypotheses for the Lamiales. Relationships among the nine first-branching families in the Lamiales tree are now resolved with very strong support. Subsequent to Plocospermataceae, a clade consisting of Carlemanniaceae plus Oleaceae branches, followed by Tetrachondraceae and a newly inferred clade composed of Gesneriaceae plus Calceolariaceae, which is also supported by morphological characters. Plantaginaceae (incl. Gratioleae) and Scrophulariaceae are well separated in the backbone grade; Lamiaceae and Verbenaceae appear in distant clades, while the recently described Linderniaceae are confirmed to be monophyletic and in an isolated position. Conclusions: Confidence about deep nodes of the Lamiales tree is an important step towards understanding the evolutionary diversification of a major clade of flowering plants. The degree of resolution obtained here now provides a first opportunity to discuss the evolution of morphological and biochemical traits in Lamiales.

Accepted 15 September, 2010 The ITS sequences of the original plants of Spica prunellae and its confusable species including 16 individuals belonging to 6 species from 12 localities, were analyzed. The results showed that the length of ITS sequences was 584 bp after alignment and the overhanging terminals were cut. When alignment gaps were treated as missing data, there were 150 variable sites. The percent divergence between species was 10.9%, with a transitions/transversions ratio of 1.53. There were 11 variable and 9 informative sites among the ITS sequences of 4 species in Prunella Linn. There were specific sites at 5, 474 and 525 nt of the ITS sequence of P. grandiflora. There were 122 specific sites between genus Ajuga and genus Prunella. Both phylogenetic trees constructed by Maximum parsimony method and Neighbor-Joining method indicated that Prunella vulgaris Linn., P. asiatica Nakai. and P. hispida Benth. had a very close relationship. The character of ITS sequences can be used for providing the molecular markers for identifying Chinese Prunella (S. prunellae).

The Dacian knowl- edge of the curative properties of medicinal plants was documented by Herodotus, Hippocrates, Galen, and Dioscorides. It must be emphasized that modern chemical screening has confirmed the therapeutic properties of the medicinal plants used by the Dacians. More interesting is that Dacians used many of these herbs for differ- ent dishes. Practically, for Dacians, food was medicine. Recent research on some Romanian medicinal plants has highlighted their pharmacognostical importance. It is known that currently, the importance and dynamics of the research on medicinal plants in the area of drug discovery continues to increase worldwide. The main reason is not only the high efficiency of secondary metabolites in case of serious diseases (cancer, viral infections, malaria, etc.) but also the minimization of the side effects of the synthetic drugs. (Lamiaceae family) species is widespread throughout the world and the fruit-spike is used in folk medicine in many countries. The Romanian resource of Prunellae spica is poorly studied from a phytochemical and pharmacological point of view; accordingly, the present study aimed to evaluate the anti-ulcer action of a hydroalcoholic extract of this species with standardized polyphenol content. The extracts used were phytochemically characterized by the total polyphenol content (TPC) and by the determination of the constituents (phenol-carboxylic acids, flavonoids) by HPLC-MS/MS. Quantitative analysis showed the presence of flavonoids in glycosidic form in fairly large quantities (hyperoside, rutoside, isoquercitrin); on the other hand, smaller quantities of aglycones (quercetol, kaempferol, apigenin) were identified and quantified.

Following systematic Jibou Botanical Garden, investigations undertaken in the botanical garden a large number of spontaneous flora, spontaneous taxons were found from the Romanian flora (650 species of adventive and vascular plants and 20 species of moss). Also were inventoried 38 species of subspontaneous plants, adventive plants, permanently established in Romania and 176 vascular plant floristic analysis, Romania species that have migrated from culture and multiply by themselves throughout the garden. In the garden greenhouses were found 183 subspontaneous species and weeds, both from the Romanian flora as well as tropical plants introduced by accident. Thus the total number of wild species rises to 1055, a large number compared to the occupied area. Some rare spontaneous plants and endemic to the Romanian flora (Galium abaujense, Cephalaria radiata, Crocus banaticus) were found. Cultivated species that once migrated from culture, accommodated to environmental conditions and conquered new territories; standing out is the Cyrtomium falcatum fern, once escaped from the greenhouses it continues to develop on their outer walls. Jibou Botanical Garden is the second largest exotic species can adapt and breed further without any botanical garden in Romania, after "Anastasie Fătu" care [11].

In this study we analysed habitats and population structure of A. montana in the Romanian NE Carpathians. We asked for differences in population structure between habitat types and how popula- tion structure is related to environmental conditions. We investigated population structure and habitat characteristics in 25 populations of A. montana on three 1 m × 1 m-plots each (total of 75 plots). The plot-based assessment of the population structure included the numbers of rosettes (rosette density), flower heads (flower head density), flowering rosettes and flower stems per flowering rosette.
