Forward Bobby Robins has already endeared himself to Condors fans as a physical presence in the Bakersfield lineup. Fans noticed him immediately for his fights, but Robins has tallied some big goals for Bakersfield this year as well. Prior to his return to North America, Robins spent two seasons playing hockey in Europe. The styles of play between North America and Europe can be quite different, especially for a guy who likes to mix it up as much as Robins. “The biggest difference is physicality,” Robins said. “There is very little checking, and that’s a big part of my game.” The transition for Robins, who spent two years playing professional hockey in the ECHL and AHL before heading over-seas, was not an easy one. “In the Austrian league, I got three different suspen- sions for clean hits,” claimed Robins. “There were two 3-game suspensions, and one 4-game one for clean hits. It’s frustrating, it’s hard to get going and get on a roll when you are losing playing time for clean hits.” But the physical play is not the only adjustment that Robins had to make. Robins remarked, “They also play on big (Olympic sized) ice surfaces over there, and that takes some getting used to as well.” The experience was good to help Robins develop other skills. “I think just being able to be on a large sheet of ice and be involved in a skill game like that. It definitely helped me worked on my speed and be more comfortable stick handling the puck,” Robins noted. “I have always been com- fortable with the physical game, but going over there helped my offensive skills.” Before Robins ever had a chance to play in a regular season game for Bakersfield, he injured his hand and was forced to watch the first month and a half of the season from the stands. Anyone who was around him during this time could see how anxious he was to get back out on the ice. “It was really frustrating. It was definitely a test for me,” said Robins. “I had to take something positive out of it, and it showed me how much will power I had. I had to ignore all of those voices telling me it’s not worth it, and come to the rink and work hard every day.” Robins expressed his excitement to return to the Condors lineup by engaging in three fights in his first two games back. He admits that he had some concern about fighting again so soon. “The hand was a big concern right off the bat. Especially and injury like that where the doctors said its 75 or 80 percent healed and I needed to take it easy,” Robins explained. “I felt like the only way to over- come that fear of being injured again was to just go at it.” He’s done just that, picking up 54 PIM in his first 9 games to go along with 3 goals and 1 assist. “I knew in the back of my head I had to do what I had come here to do. That was to come to North America and play the game that I was meant to play. I play a physical, hard-nosed style, and fight- ing is a part of that.”
