Rules for Modern Warfare 1960 to 2020 ARMOUR VALUES BOOK So what is this all about then? I figured that people would like a handy reference guide to compare armoured vehicles to make informed decisions about what to field and more importantly gain intelligence about what they might be potentially facing on the battlefield. Just like in the real world away from our miniature battlefield on the table, defence agencies employ military intelligence1 assets and analysts to figure out what the opposition has and how best to counter it. No point firing your LAW-66 at the front aspect of the T-62 bearing down on you as it will be too late to realise it will not penetrate when the T-62 turns you into red mists with it’s U-5Ts 115mm gun! Lucky for you though you attended the briefing on opposition armoured forces and now know that you should wait for the T-62 to rumble past and hit it in the side… Now, of course, that won’t work if it’s a T-90m you’re facing!! The following book contains the (nearly) complete armoured vehicles (including support and infantry guns) for the American Army, British, West Germans, Israeli, Italian, French, and Soviet/Russian armies. This book is a work in progress, so updated versions will be coming along and may even include the Dutch, Belgian, Norwegian and East German and Chinese armies -if I don’t decide to do a Volume II. This is the Second Edition, adding new equipment that has/will shortly be entering, service, since 1990. This Updated edition spans 1960 to 2020. This book does not include points costs and any TO&E (Table of Organisation & Equipment). It is intended as a reference guide for players of COLD WAR3! To compare and contrast their armies against their opponents so there are no nasty surprises and arguments when your 90mm gun bounces off the armour of their Challenger II MBT. I bear no responsibility if using this book leads to your utter destruction on the tabletop! Rules for Modern Warfare 1960 to 2020 ARMOUR VALUES BOOK The United Kingdom has always been at the forefront of armoured vehicle development ever since the first Mk.I Tanks rumbled across the mud of Flanders. Once the UK switched from Cruiser/Heavy Tank concept to one of universal tanks emphasising firepower and armour over mobility as demonstrated in the Centurion tanks that entered production near the end of WW2 and remained until the development of the Chieftain in the 1960’s. Without the cancellation of the Iranian Shir-Iran2 the Uk would never have adopted the Challenger I. Unfortunately, financial problems have always beset the Uk government hindering advancements and productions. Challenger will continue to be the main MBt -beating contenders such as the US Abrams M2a3 and the German Leopard 2a5 to become the Challenger -3. Developments in armoured laminates and composite armours gave the world Chobham (from the Uk town where it was developed) and subsequently Dorchester wich improves upon the formula! With the end of WW2, the UK’s mechanised forces where greatly drawn down with a few tired M3 half trackls remaining in service. The veritable Saracen entered service in the 1950’s in response to the Malaya Emergency and then went on to serve up until it’s replacement with the Fv432 in 1964! The Fv432 still carries on in service as a mortar platform and other specialised roles, with the McV-80 Warrior replacing all Fv432’s in front line mechanised service. Warrior was due to be upgraded with a new survivability package and a new turret mounting a 40mm caseless round gun, but this has since been cancelled -was due to be rolling out in 2020. Now Warrior will be replaced with Ajax and the Boxer APC’s. Boxer is an 8 wheeled multi-role APC, with a variety of armaments that can be fitted to the chasis wich has armour upgrade packages that can be modified as the threat dictates. It will also have counter IED and ECM packages as standard and will roll out across the British army starting in 2023. Ajax is a fully tracked scout vehicle system, with 40mm turret (from the warrior upgrade project) and will be entering service at some point in the future if the project is not cancelled due to issues with noise and vibration for the crew(s). • Flyhawk M1A2 SEP Main Battle Tank 72Nd Scale Review
Background – the M1 Abrams: The M1 tank is named for former Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams, commander of the US military forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. Designed as a replacement for the M60 Patton tank, the first prototypes were developed by Chrysler and General Motors in 1976. As the new tank was to be turbine powered, the Chrysler prototype was chosen for production to take advantage of the company’s extensive experience with land based turbine powered vehicles. The tank entered service with the US Army as the M1 Abrams in 1980, with a total of 3,200 vehicles produced from 1979 to 1985. The multi-fuel turbine engine can run on diesel, kerosene, any grade of gasoline, and JP-4 and JP-8 jet fuel. The vehicle features composite armour, protection from nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and carries its ammunition in a special blow-out compartment that vents outboard to protect the crew. It is operated by a crew of four, weighs 68 tons, and can achieve 66 kmh. The main gun is the Royal Ordnance 105mm gun, produced under license. The vehicle can also be fitted with mine roller or mine plow attachments. The tank has been exported to Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Iraq. Beginning in 1986, the tank was up-gunned to the Rheinmetall 120mm, also produced under license. Known as the M1A1, more than 5,000 of this variant were completed from 1986 to 1992. Review Copyright 2017 Robert G. Brown The M1A2 is an improved M1A1 and features a thermal viewer for the commander, GPS navigation equipment, digital controls and displays, and an improved fire control system.

  • Procurement Politics, Technology Transfer and the Challenges of Collaborative MBT Projects in the NATO Alliance Since 1945
A Standard European Tank? Procurement Politics, Technology Transfer and the Challenges of Collaborative MBT Projects in the NATO Alliance since 1945 Mike Cubbin School of Arts and Media Salford University Submitted to the University of Salford in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2019 Abstract International cooperation in weapons technology projects has long been a feature of alliance politics; and, there are many advantages to both international technology transfer and standardisation within military alliances. International collaboration between national defence industries has produced successful weapon systems from technologically advanced fighter aircraft to anti-tank missiles. Given the success of many joint defence projects, one unresolved question is why there have been no successful collaborative international main battle tank (MBT) projects since 1945. This thesis seeks to answer this question by considering four case studies of failed attempts to produce an MBT through an international collaborative tank project: first and second, the Franco-German efforts to produce a standard European tank, or Euro-Panzer (represented by two separate projects in 1957-63 and 1977- 83); third, the US-German MBT-70 project (1963-70); and, fourth, the Anglo-German Future Main Battle Tank, or KPz3 (1971-77). In order to provide an explanation of the causes of failure on four separate occasions, the analysis includes reference to other high-technology civilian and military joint projects which either succeeded,
