The presence of the frog in its habitat is easily detected from its advertisement call; males usually call in a chorus, they call to each other in a large group. Bioacoustic of calls of a typical individual male of H. celebensis have not been described in detail, although it is very easy to find this species in freshwater swamps, permanent ponds, or slow-flowing waters in the lowland areas. The purpose of the bioacoustic analysis on H. celebensis’s calls that were recorded at Bahodopi area is to build a reference collection to be compared with H. celebensis’s bioacoustics from other regions in Sulawesi. Because of the wide distribution of this frog in Sulawesi; genetic structure of H. celebensis population may also follow the genetic structure of Ingerophrynus celebensispopulation. Calls of H. celebensis have two types of calls, i.e. pure tone and pulse; however, pure tones have three variation, namely pure tone type 1, pure tone type 2 and pure tone type 3; however pulsed call has only one type. www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Congolius, a new genus of African reed frog endemic to the central Congo: A potential case of convergent evolution Tadeáš Nečas1,2*, Gabriel Badjedjea3, Michal Vopálenský4 & Václav Gvoždík1,5* The reed frog genus Hyperolius (Afrobatrachia, Hyperoliidae) is a speciose genus containing over 140 species of mostly small to medium-sized frogs distributed in sub-Saharan Africa. Its high level of colour polymorphism, together with in anurans relatively rare sexual dichromatism, make systematic studies more difcult. As a result, the knowledge of the diversity and taxonomy of this genus is still limited. Hyperolius robustus known only from a handful of localities in rain forests of the central Congo Basin is one of the least known species. Here, we have used molecular methods for the frst time to study the phylogenetic position of this taxon, accompanied by an analysis of phenotype based on external (morphometric) and internal (osteological) morphological characters. Our phylogenetic results undoubtedly placed H. robustus out of Hyperolius into a common clade with sympatric Cryptothylax and West African Morerella. To prevent the uncovered paraphyly, we place H. robustus into a new genus, Congolius. The review of all available data suggests that the new genus is endemic to the central Congolian lowland rain forests. The analysis of phenotype underlined morphological similarity of the new genus to some Hyperolius species. This uniformity of body shape (including cranial shape) indicates that the two genera have either retained ancestral morphology or evolved through convergent evolution under similar ecological pressures in the African rain forests. African reed frogs, Hyperoliidae Laurent, 1943, are presently encompassing almost 230 species in 17 genera. -

Barroso1 Amphibians are models for studying applied ecological issues such as habitat loss, pollution, disease, and global climate change due to their sensitivity and vulnerability to changes in the environment. Developmental series of amphibians are informative about their biology, and X-ray based 3D reconstruction holds promise for quantifying morphological changes during growth—some with a direct impact on the possibility of an experimental investigation on several of the ecological topics listed above. However, 3D resolution and discrimination of their soft tissues have been difcult with traditional X-ray computed tomography, without time-consuming contrast staining. Tomographic data were initially performed (pre-processing and reconstruction) using the open- source software tool SYRMEP Tomo Project. Data processing and analysis of the reconstructed tomography volumes were conducted using the segmentation semi-automatic settings of the software Avizo Fire 8, which provide information about each investigated tissues, organs or bone elements. Hence, volumetric analyses were carried out to quantify the development of structures in diferent tadpole developmental stages. Our work shows that synchrotron X-ray microtomography using phase-contrast mode resolves the edges of the internal tissues (as well as overall tadpole morphology), facilitating the segmentation of the investigated tissues. Reconstruction algorithms and segmentation software played an important role in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of each target structure of the Thoropa miliaris tadpole at diferent stages of development, providing information on volume, shape and length. -

This hypothesis was tested by first elucidating phylogenetically closed Sarawak frog species via DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA gene, and later determining their microhabitat guild and partitioning via nonmetric dimensional scale. Mitochondrial 16S gene revealed 5 monophyletic groups consisting of Hylarana erythraea + Amnirana nicobariensis, Chalcorana raniceps, Abavorana luctuosa, Pulchrana signata + P. picturata, and P. baramica + P. glandulosa + P. laterimaculata. On the other hand, microhabitat utilization grouped the frogs into 5 ecological guilds consisting of semiarboreal species at the forest edge (C. raniceps), ground dwellers in an unforested region (H. erythraea), ground dwellers (rock) at the forest edge (P. picturata), ground dwellers on the forest floor and forest edge species (P. signata, P. glandulosa, A. luctuosa, O. hosii), and semiarboreal forest (riverine) species (P. baramica). Thus, the microhabitats used were not influenced by the proposed phylogenetic relationships. -

Für die übrigen drei Gebiete (Nimba Berge, Ziama, Pic de Fon) werteten wir Literaturdaten aus und untersuchten Belegexemplare in der Sammlung des Museums Koenig in Bonn (ZFMK). Insgesamt listen wir 73 für Südostguinea nachgewiesene Amphibienarten auf. Die Anzahl der pro Gebiet nachgewiesenen Arten reichte von 29 bis 58. Der Prozentsatz, der für Oberguinea endemischen Arten (insgesamt 39) pro Gebiet, schwankte von 42 bis 53 %. Einige Arten werden von uns detaillierter diskutiert. Der hohe Anteil von Störungsanzeigern (farmbush species) in allen untersuchten Gebieten ist ein untrügliches Zeichen für die be- reits deutlich fortgeschrittene Walddegradation, am dramatischsten sichtbar in Déré. Wir unterstreichen die Bedeu- tung von Wald-Guinea als eines der artenreichsten Gebiete Afrikas und fordern nachdrücklich einen intensiveren Schutz der verbliebenen Wälder und eine gründliche Untersuchung der vielen endemischen Amphibienarten über die nahezu keine Daten verfügbar sind. -

However, recent phylogenetic studies of African torrent-frogs have uncovered high divergence in these phenotypically and ecologically similar frogs, in particular between West African torrent-frogs versus Central (Petropedetes) and East African (Arthroleptides and Ericabatrachus) lineages. Because of the considerable molecular divergence, and external morphology of the single West African torrent-frog species a new genus was erected (Odontobatrachus). In this study we aim to clarify the systematic position of West African torrent-frogs (Odontobatrachus). We determine the relationships of torrent-frogs using a multi-locus, nuclear and mitochondrial, dataset and include genera of all African and Asian ranoid families. Using micro-tomographic scanning we examine osteology and external morphological features of West African torrent-frogs to compare them with other ranoids. Results: Our analyses reveal Petropedetidae (Arthroleptides, Ericabatrachus, Petropedetes) as the sister taxon of the Pyxicephalidae. The phylogenetic position of Odontobatrachus is clearly outside Petropedetidae, and not closely related to any other ranoid family.
