German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject. -

German culture after 1945 has been preoccupied by the memory of war, National Socialism, and the Holocaust; debates among historians are front-page news, particularly the Historians’ Debate of the 1980s and the Goldhagen debate of the 90s. Literature and film have been important vehicles for the process of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, or coming to terms with the past, and we will discuss texts that both portray and perform acts of memory. We will examine various strategies of remembering and memorializing the past, always asking what the significance of memory is for the present and future. Furthermore, we will examine a range of memory cultures, considering memories of the 1950s “economic miracle,” the 60s student movement and 70s radicalism, and the GDR and its demise, all of which coexist (and compete) with memories of the war and the Holocaust in the same cultural space. No expertise in spoken or written German is required for participation in the course. However, students majoring in German will be expected to read texts in the original German. -

Instructor: Marion Gerlind, PhD (510) 430-2673 • [email protected] Literature and Film of the Weimar Republic (in English translation) OLLI@Berkeley, Spring 2019 Mondays, April 1—29, 2019 (5 weeks), 10:00 a.m. — 12:30 p.m. University Hall 41B, Berkeley, CA 94720 In this interactive seminar we shall read and reflect on literature as well as watch and discuss films of the Weimar Republic (1919–33), one of the most creative periods in German history, following the traumatic Word War I and revolutionary times. Many of the critical issues and challenges during these short 14 years are still relevant today. The Weimar Republic was not only Germany’s first democracy, but also a center of cultural experimentation, producing cutting-edge art. We’ll explore some of the most popular works: Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s musical play, The Threepenny Opera, Joseph von Sternberg’s original film The Blue Angel, Irmgard Keun’s bestseller The Artificial Silk Girl, Leontine Sagan’s classic film Girls in Uniform, Erich Maria Remarque’s antiwar novel All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as compelling poetry by Else Lasker-Schüler, Gertrud Kolmar, and Mascha Kaléko. Format This course will be conducted in English (films with English subtitles). Your active participation and preparation is highly encouraged! I recommend that you read the literature in preparation for our sessions. I shall provide weekly study questions, introduce (con)texts in short lectures and facilitate our discussions. You will have the opportunity to discuss the literature/films in small and large groups. We’ll consider authors’ biographies in the socio-historical background of their work. -

53 (2/2019), pp. 109–123 The Polish Journal DOI: 10.19205/53.19.6 of Aesthetics Ido Lewit* “He Couldn’t Tell the Difference between The Merry Widow and Tristan and Isolde”: Kafka’s Anti-Wagnerian Philosophy of Music Abstract This essay exposes an anti-Wagnerian philosophy of music in Franz Kafka’s “Researches of a Dog” and “The Silence of the Sirens.” Themes of music, sound, and silence are over- whelmingly powerful in these stories and cannot be divorced from corporeal and visual aspects. These aspects are articulated in the selected texts in a manner that stands in stark opposition to Richard Wagner’s philosophy of music as presented in the composer’s sem- inal 1870 “Beethoven” essay. Keywords Richard Wagner, Franz Kafka, Philosophy of Music, Transcendence, Acousmatic Sound, Silence Max Brod, Franz Kafka’s close friend and literary executor, recalls in his bi- ography of the author that Kafka once said that “he couldn’t tell the differ- ence between The Merry Widow and Tristan and Isolde” (1995, 115). Brod evokes this memory in order to exemplify Kafka’s supposed lack of musi- cality. Indeed, for a German-speaking intellectual such as Kafka, not being able to differentiate Franz Lehár’s light operetta from Richard Wagner’s solemn, monumental music-drama would not simply be an example of unmusicality, but a symptom of cultural autism. (This course is also offered for graduate students as German 401.) Presumes no knowledge of the German language. In the course students learn basic vocabulary around topics such as classroom objects, daily routines, descriptions of people and objects, simple narration in present time, etc. German 101 covers material presented in the textbook VORSPRUNG from Kapitel 1 to Kapitel 6. Students read and discuss “real” texts (written by and for native) speakers from the start. Grammar is explained using examples from these texts as well as from a graphic novel, told in installments, that traces the journey of an American exchange student, Anna Adler, to the university in Tübingen as well as her adventures once there. The course also offers basic cultural insights and comparisons that are further elaborated on in second-year courses. Testing is done in increments of chapter quizzes; there is no mid- term and no traditional final exam. Students also complete writing & reading assignments as well as matching assessments, all with a take-home component. There are two oral projects. Class participation is encouraged and an attendance policy is in place. This course cannot be audited. -

Literatur, Politik&Biographie aus unserer Nachbarschaft Lesungen 2017: Lesung über Gottfried Benn Autoren-Leseabend mit Holger Hof am Dienstag, 4. April 2017, 19.00 Uhr, Wahlkreisbüro Gottfried Benn (1886-1956) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der literarischen Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er schrieb Gedichte, Dramen, Erzählungen und Essays. Besonders bekannt sind seine Gedichtbände (z. B. „Fleisch“ 1917), die stark expressionistisch geprägt sind. Benn hat neben seiner literarischen Tätigkeit immer auch als Arzt gearbeitet. Seit 1904 lebte Benn (mit einigen Unterbrechungen) in Berlin, von 1937 bis zu seinem Tod 1956 befand sich seine Wohnung mit der Arztpraxis in der Bozener Straße 20 in Schöneberg (nah an der Grenze zu Wilmersdorf). Den Gottfried-Benn-Abend gestaltet Holger Hof. Er lebt als freier Autor in Berlin und gilt als einer der kompetentesten Benn-Experten. Über Benn hat er u.a. eine Biografie geschrieben und eine Bildbiografie erstellt, zudem hat er den Briefwechsel mit Ernst Jünger herausgegeben. Über die Lese-Reihe: Der Berliner Westen, von der Kantstraße bis zum Bayerischen Platz, war vor allem in der Weimarer Republik die bevorzugte Wohngegend von Berliner Literaten. Viele Autorinnen und Autoren, die schon berühmt waren oder später berühmt wurden, haben hier gewohnt. Zu nennen sind vor allem Gottfried Benn, Walter Benjamin, Heinrich Mann, Else Lasker-Schüler, Anna Seghers, Kurt Tucholsky und Else Ury. Sie alle wohnten in Wilmersdorf oder Charlottenburg. chapter 17 Czech Language and Literature Peter Zusi Recent years have seen a certain tendency to refer to Kafka as a ‘Czech’ author – a curious designation for a writer whose literary works, without exception, are composed in German. As the preceding chapter describes, Kafka indeed lived most of his life in a city where Czech language and society gradually came to predominate over the German-speaking minor- ity, and Kafka – a native German-speaker – adapted deftly to this changing social landscape. Referring to Kafka as Czech, however, is inaccurate, explicable perhaps only as an attempt to counterbalance a contrasting simplification of his complicated biography: the marked tendency within Kafka scholarship to investigate his work exclusively in the context of German, Austrian or Prague-German literary history. The Czech socio-cultural impulses that surrounded Kafka in his native Prague have primarily figured in Kafka scholarship through sociological sketches portraying ethnic animosity, lack of communication and, at times, open violence between the two largest lin- guistic communities in the city. These historical realities have given rise to the persistent image of a ‘dividing wall’ between the Czech- and German- speaking inhabitants of Prague, with the two populations reading different newspapers, attending separate cultural institutions and congregating in segregated social venues. This image of mutual indifference or antagonism has often made the question of Kafka’s relation to Czech language and cul- ture appear peripheral. Yet confronting the perplexing blend of proximity and distance, famil- iarity and resentment which characterized inter-linguistic and inter- cultural contact in Kafka’s Prague is a necessary challenge.
