Their cultures are integral pieces of the beautiful mosaic that is the Filipino heritage. We owe a debt of gratitude to our countrymen from the cultural communities. Through the centuries their customs, languages, and noble spirit have contributed to the development of our national character. As we gain greater understanding of these cultures, we can only take greater pride in the remarkable richness of our Filipino heritage. For these reasons, it is imperative that the languages and traditions of the Filipino cultural communities be preserved. This book, in the language of a cultural community, is intended to assist in that preservation. It is designed to build reading and comprehension skills and to expand knowledge through the medium of the reader's own language. This first language approach to learning builds pride in the mother tongue and makes reading a rewarding experience. The skills and confidence thus acquired help equip the reader to pursue further education in the national language. The Department of Education, Culture and Sports is pleased to introduce this book, the most recent io a series designed to promote literacy in the cultural communities. In serving these communities, the good of the entire nation is served . .~.~ Secretary Preface The purpose of this book is to assist speakers of Matigsalug to extend their knowledge and abilities, by helping them to get started in the major surrounding languages of the country - namely Cebuano, Filipino and English. Matigsalug is a member of the Manobo group of languages spoken by the Matigsalug peoples around the mountains m south-eastern Bukidnon. The statements in Cebuano, Filipino and English are not always exact word for word equivalents but try to show the natural ways they are spoken in each language.
