Letters from Isle of Anglesey Chief Executive Annwen Morgan, Huw Percy Head of Highways are rather disappointing as they do not even offer an opinion as to the merits or not of the creation of a Multiuse Path across the island & the potential benefits it could bring, from health, fitness, disabled & adaptive cycling & many other uses other than just tourism, which at best the Heritage Railway can only offer a very narrow benefit to the island. It is rather at odds that the Anglesey Local Access Forum (a subcommittee of the Council) who we presented our scheme to in November which gave Lôn Las Môn a unanimous vote of approval. As have three Community Councils along its route. As this is a scheme to be run by Lôn Las Môn CIC, we are not looking for Isle of Anglesey to run or manage the project, we just need their support and not to oppose clearly what would be a benefit to the island and a whole. 2. We are aware of the consultation between Network Rail & the Welsh Government on the proposed lease of the railway in June 2016 with an associated 3 month rolling termination provision. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time. -

In recent years tourism has become a significant industry within the Principality of Wales and has been influenced by changing conditions and the need to attract visitors from the global market. To enable an analysis of the importance of Welsh island culture a number of research methods have been used, including consideration of secondary data, to assess the development of tourism, a case study analysis of a sample of Welsh islands, and an investigation of cultural tourism. The research has been undertaken in three distinct stages. The first stage assessed tourism in Wales and the role of cultural tourism and the islands off Wales. It draws primarily on existing research and secondary data sources. The second stage considered the role of Welsh island culture taking into consideration six case study islands (three with current populations and three mainly unpopulated) and their physical characteristics, cultural aspects and tourism. The third stage examined the nature and importance of island culture in terms of sustainable tourism in Wales. This has involved both internal (island) and external (national and international) influences. -

Whether they mounted their attacks from the north or the south, when Norman barons invaded Wales after the Norman Conquest of 1066, they almost invariably ended up in West Wales and consolidated their position by building fortresses. Initially, these were simple “motte and bailey” constructions, typically built on a mound with ditches and/or wooden barricades for protection. -
