Alberto Alesina Head of the Department of Economics at Harvard University where he is also Nathanial Ropes Professor of Political Economy. He is the author of books and articles published in the most important international scientific magazines and in influential newspapers, including “Il Sole-24 Ore”, the “Financial Times”, “Wall Street Journal Europe” and “Le Monde”. His research centres on the economics of political choices and on monetary and fiscal policy. He has received numerous prizes and international awards for his work. His most recent books translated into Italian include Un mondo di differenze (Laterza 2005) which was written jointly with Ed Glaeser.

Anthony Atkinson One of the most important international experts on the subject of the distribution of wealth and the economics of political choices, he has taught at the University of Essex, MIT, University College London, the London School of Economics, the University of Cambridge and Churchill College. He has been Warden of Nuffield College in Oxford since 1994, a Knight of Great Britain since 2000 and Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur since 2001. His main areas of research are welfare and public economics, on which subject he has published many books. He has also dealt with the distribution of wealth and poverty, receiving numerous international awards. His works translated into Italian include Per un nuovo Welfare State (Laterza 1998) and La povertà in Europa (il Mulino 2000).

Arnaldo Bagnasco Lectures on sociology and welfare theory at the University of Turin. He has concerned himself with economic sociology and development and collaborated in drawing up the strategic plan for Turin. He is Vice-President of the Italian Council for Social Science and a member of the Academy of the Lincei. His most recent publications include Società fuori squadra: come cambia l’organizzazione sociale (il Mulino 2003).

Zygmunt Bauman Emeritus professor of Sociology at the Universities of Leeds and Warsaw, he is one of the most well-known and influential thinkers in the world. His more recent works in Italian include Vita liquida, Vite di scarto, Voglia di comunità, Dentro la globalizzazione, Intervista sull’identità, Modernità liquida, La società sotto assedio, published by Laterza.

Carlo Bastasin A journalist, he is currently leader writer for the “Stampa” after having been assistant director. He was previously the Berlin and Frankfurt correspondent for the “Sole-24ore”. He is the author of books on Germany and essays on Europe for Italian and international publications. His publications include Alexanderplatz:da Berlino all’Europa tedesca (Feltrinelli, 1996)

Kaushik Basu One of the most important scholars of development economics. Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University (State of New York), where he also directs the Programme on Comparative Economic Development, he is a member of the advisory committee on child labour of the ILO (International Labour Organization). A contributor to “BBC Online”, he writes for international scientific magazines, newspapers and periodicals such as the “New York Times”, “Scientific American”, “India Today” and “Business Standard”.

Leonardo Becchetti Lecturer in Political Economics at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, he is Chairman of the Ethical Committee of the Banca Popolare Etica. He writes for prestigious national and international magazines and is the author of numerous publications, particularly on the subjects of growth, sustainable development and social responsibility in relation to consumption and saving

Giuseppe Bertola Lecturer in Political Economics at the University of Turin, he is the author of essays on the economics of labour and finance published in prestigious international magazines. He is editorial manager for economic policy, associate editor of the “Journal of Economics” and joint editor of the “Giornale degli Economisti e Annali di Economia”. He has been a lecturer at Princeton and at the European University Institute in Fiesole.

Carlo Borzaga

27 Lecturer in Labour Economics, he is head of the Faculty of Economics in Trento. His fields of research mainly concern economic growth and development with reference to regional and local aspects, the labour market, non-profit making organisations and welfare organisations. He recently published Economia della solidarietà (Donzelli 2006).

Andrea Brandolini Economist at the Research Department of the Bank of Italy, where he deals with macroeconomic analysis, with particular reference to the labour market and the dynamics of consumption and family savings. His research work has mostly concentrated on issues relating to the distribution of income and wealth, poverty and social exclusion, the relationship between economic disparity and macroeconomic conditions. Since 1993 he has represented the Bank of Italy on the Commission investigating social exclusion. He is the author of numerous publications in Italy and abroad.

Daniele Checchi Lecturer in Labour Economics at the University of Milan, he worked as economic advisor for the trade unions in the period 1978-88 and subsequently participated in various research projects relating to decentralised negotiation. He concerns himself with trade-unions and the economics of education. He was a member of the government commission on the reorganisation of school schedules (July 2000). He is the author of articles published in national and international magazines, in addition to various books including, La diseguaglianza. Istruzione e mercato del lavoro (1997) published by Laterza and Istruzione e mercato (1999) published by il Mulino.

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo The President of the Confederation of Italian industry, he is currently Chairman of Fiat and Chairman and Managing Director of Ferrari and Maserati. In 2004 he was named by the “Financial Times” as one of the best fifty managers in the world.

Ralf Dahrendorf One of the greatest social scientists and political scholars of our times, he is a member of the House of Lords. His more recent books include La società riaperta. Dal crollo del muro alla guerra in Iraq , Libertà attiva. Sei lezioni su un mondo instabile , published by Laterza.

Francesco Daveri Lecturer in Political Economics at the University of Parma, he also teaches on the PhD course in Economics and the MBA programme of the Scuola di Direzione Aziendale of the Bocconi University in Milan. He is a Research Fellow of IGIER. He has also acted as a consultant for the World Bank, the Ministry of Economics and CEPS in Brussels. He contributes to the cultural pages of the “Sole-24 Ore”. His publications include Economia dei paesi in via di sviluppo (il Mulino 1996) and Innovazione cercasi. Il problema italiano (Laterza 2006).

Luca De Biase A journalist with “Il Sole-24 Ore”, responsible for “Nova24”, he lectures on journalism at the University of Padova and at IULM in Milan. His research concentrates on the relationship between technological innovation, cultural history and social prospects. He has contributed towards the planning and realisation of initiatives such as Skillpass, ScienceXpress, EquiLiber and Reporters Online. Together with Giorgio Meletti he edited Bidone.com (Fazi 2001) and he is the author of publications including In nome del popolo mondiale (Fazi 2001), Il mago debiz (Fazi 2000) and "edeologia" (Laterza 2003).

Paolo De Castro Lecturer at the Universities of Bologna, Sassari and Washington, until 1996 he was scientific co-ordinator for the Osservatorio agro-industriale of the Nomisma research centre in Bologna. He currently lectures on Economics and Agrarian Policy at the Faculty of Economics in Bologna. The author of various scientific publications, he is a member of numerous Italian and international associations dealing with agriculture. In 1998 he was Minister for Agricultural Policy.

Daniela Del Boca Lectures on Political Economics at the University of Turin and is Visiting Professor at New York University. She has been a consultant for OECS and the European Commission. She is Director of the CHILD centre. She concerns herself with issues relating to economics of the family and employment, with particular attention for the role of institutions. Together with Tito Boeri and Christopher Pissarides she recently edited Women at work in Europe (Oxford University Press).

28 Riccardo Faini Lectures on Economic Policy at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, after having taught at the University of Essex and the University of Venice. He was Executive Director for Italy at the International Monetary Fund and he has worked for the World Bank and the Treasury. He is the head of research into international economics at CEPR in London and a member of the editorial committee of numerous scientific magazines. His scientific interests regard the field of development economics and business theory.

Fang Gang Considered to be the most authoritative Chinese economist. He is the Director of the National Economics Research Institute at the China Reform Foundation in Peking, Professor of Economics at the University of Peking, the Shanghai Communication (Jiao-Tong) University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He works as a consultant for the Chinese government and various international organisations. He is the author of numerous scientific publications in the fields of macroeconomics and economies in transition. He has obtained prestigious prizes and awards for his research work.

Geremia Gios Lectures on Agrarian Economics at the Economics Faculty of the University of Trento. He concerns himself with analysis of the problems and prospects for agriculture and forests in mountain areas, analysis of the agro-industrial sector and the question of quality in agricultural product markets, methods for evaluating environmental assets and analysis of the environmental sustainability of the economic system. He recently published La valutazione economica dei beni ambientali: introduzione al metodo della valutazione contingente (Cedam 2001).

Daniel Gros Director of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels. In the past he has worked with the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and numerous governments and central banks. His main areas of research are European monetary union, macroeconomic policy and transitional economies.

Richard Layard Founder of the Centre for Economic Performance established at the London School of Economics. He was a consultant of the British Labour government between 1997 and 2001 and in 2000 he became a member of the House of Lords. His research centres on the problems of unemployment, inequality, inflation and the transition of old Soviet block countries to a market economy. His publications translated into Italian include Misurarsi con la disoccupazione (Laterza 1999) and Felicità (Rizzoli 2005).

Marco Liera In charge of “Plus24”, the weekly Saturday supplement of the “Sole-24 Ore” dedicated to finance and saving and of the section “Risparmio & Famiglia” in the Sunday edition of the newspaper, he is a lecturer on the two-year course for the degree in Economic and Social Disciplines at the Bocconi University in Milan. His most recent publications include Re di denari (Sperling & Kupfer 2001) and Capire la Borsa (with Andrea Beltratti, “Sole-24 Ore” 2005).

Massimo Livi Bacci Lectures on Demography at the University of . Once President of the International Union for Scientific Study of Population, his most recent publications are La popolazione nella storia d’Europa ( Laterza 1998), Introduzione alla Demografia (Loescher 1999), Storia minima della popolazione del mondo (Il Mulino 2001) and Population and Poverty (Oxford University Press, 2000).

Vittorio Malagutti He recounted the financial background to Tangentopoli for the weekly publication “il Mondo”. For the “” he has covered issues such as the Russiagate scandal of Boris Yeltsin, the trial of Slobodan Milosevic, the crisis of the Bipop bank, the crash of Cirio, owned by Sergio Cragnotti, the financial difficulties of football and the bankruptcy of Parmalat. He currently works as a correspondent for the “Espresso”. He is the author of the books I conti truccati del calcio (Carocci 2002) and Buconero SpA. Dentro il crac Parmalat (Laterza 2004).

Stefano Micossi Director-General of Assonime, the association of Italian joint-stock companies, and Professor of International Economics at the College of Europe. He is co-editor and author of books on the European Monetary System, adjustment and integration in the world economy and inflation in Europe and the author of numerous articles in Italian and international scientific magazines on macroeconomics, internal and international monetary economics, industrial policy, European institutions and decision-making powers.

Stephen Nickell President of the Royal Economic Society, he is School Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics and a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. His essays on labour economics have moulded generations of labour economists. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and the British Academy, honorary foreign member of the American Economic Association and Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labour in Bonn. His scientific interests mostly relate to employment, unemployment and the dynamics of pay.

Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa President of the IASC Foundation (International Accounting Standard Committee), Senior Fellow of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI, Roma) and President of Notre Europe (Paris), he was a member of the board of the Central European Bank from 1998 to 2005. Previously he was Chairman of CONSOB (Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa) and Deputy Director-General of the Bank of Italy. He has received numerous awards, including nomination as Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Frankfurt in 1999. His books include, Europa, forza gentile (2001) ; La lunga via per l’Euro (2004), both for il Mulino, and Dodici settembre (2004) for Rizzoli.

Walter Passerini Journalist with the “Sole 24ore”, responsible for “Job24”, he was editor of the “Corriere della Sera” supplement “Corriere-Lavoro”. Lorenzo Sacconi Lectures on Economic Policy at the University of Trento and is the holder of the Unicredit professorship in ethical economics and the social responsibility of businesses at the same university. He recently edited Guida critica alla responsabilità sociale e al governo di impresa (Bancaria editrice 2005).

Michele Salvati Lectures on Political Economics at the Università Statale in Milan. He was member of parliament during the 1996-2001 legislature, becoming a member of the Bicameral Commission for Constitutional Reform and the Labour Commission. He is the author of various books, essays and articles in different fields of research: industrial economics, labour economics, macroeconomics, history of economic doctrines, political economy , history of Italian and comparative economic development after the Second World War. His publications include Occasioni mancate. Economia e politica in Italia dagli anni ‘60 a oggi (Laterza 2000) and Il partito democratico (Il Mulino 2003).

Antonio Schizzerotto Lectures on Sociology at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Trento. At the same university he has been head of the faculty of Sociology and he has also lectured at the University of Milan Bicocca. His many areas of interest in the field of research include the transition from school to employment, unemployment and sexual and generational

30 inequality. The author of numerous books, his publications include Vite Ineguali. Disuguaglianze e corsi di vita nell’Italia contemporanea (Il Mulino 2002).

Bernardo Secchi Lectures on Town-Planning at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice and at the Ecole d’Architecture de Gènève and has also taught at the Politecnico in Milan, the University of Leuven, ETH in , IFU in Paris VIII and at the Ecole d’Architecture in Rennes. He has devised and developed plans and projects for cities such as Siena, Bergamo, Prato, Pesaro, Brescia, Geneva, Marseilles, Rennes, Rouen and Antwerp. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Mendès France in Grenoble and received a special award from the jury of the Grand Prix d’Urbanisme et de l’Art Urbaine. His numerous publications include Prima lezione di urbanistica (2005) and La città del ventesimo secolo (2006), published by Laterza .

Kizito Sesana

Jakob Svensson Professor at the Institute for International Economic Studies in Stockholm, he is one of the greatest international economic experts on aid to developing countries. His research lies on the frontier between the economics of development and the economics of political choices. In recent studies he has tried to measure the corruption involved in management of the flow of aid to developing countries. The author of numerous publications in prestigious scientific magazines, he works for the World Bank.

Secondo Tarditi Full Professor of Economics and Agrarian Policy and Director of the Centro Interuniversitario di Politica Agro- alimentare-ambientale of the University of Siena (CIPAS). He has lectured on Economics at the Faculty of Agriculture in Piacenza and at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Massachusetts. The author of numerous articles and books on agrarian policy, he has also worked as a consultant for various international organisations and as Special Advisor to the European Commission on consumer policy.

Jan C. van Ours Professor in Labour Economics at the Economics Department of Tilburg University. He deals with the dynamics of unemployment, policy intervention on the employment market, incentives for increasing employment and immigration. He has published articles in prestigious international scientific magazines, such as the American Economic Review , the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Labour Economics, the Economic Journal and the European Economic Review. He has been given prestigious international awards for his work.

Gianfranco Viesti Professor in Economic Policy at the University of Bari. He is a member of the scientific committee of the Istituto per il Commercio Estero (ICE), the Osservatorio sulle Piccole e Medie Imprese (Gruppo Bancaroma) and the Italianieuropei Foundation. He has acted as a consultant for the government and for the Ministries of Employment and the Treasury. His main fields of research are foreign trade, the activities of multinational companies, the development of industrial sectors and models for local development and industrial areas. He is the author of numerous essays on economic development and international integration and his publications include Come nascono i distretti industriali and Abolire il Mezzogiorno (2003) for Laterza.

Paola Villa Lecturer in the Economics of Institutions and Industrial Economics at the University of Trento. Her main field of research is labour economics. She is the author of numerous studies published in Italy and abroad on the dynamics of employment and unemployment. A significant part of her research work in the last few years has been dedicated to problems linked to the integration of women in the employment market.

How to get to Trento

By car: A22 Brennero motorway, exiting at Trento Centro (around 90 km from Verona Nord); SS. 12 Abetone-Brennero road along the Adige valley. If you are coming from Padova, Bassano or Belluno take the SS. 47 Valsugana road (superstrada), whereas if you are coming from the Lombardia side of Lake Garda it is possible to take the SS 45bis road along the western side of the lake.

By train: Trento is on the Verona-Brennero-Monaco line. Numerous EC, IC, Eurostar (for Rome), and regional trains to/from Verona and Bolzano stop at the station. Direct link to Venezia-Mestre via Valsugana-Bassano del Grappa-Castelfranco Veneto.

By plane: the closest airports are the Dolomiti airport at Bolzano-San Giacomo, the Valerio Catullo airport at Verona-Villafranca, Treviso, Brescia, Venice, Milan-Linate and Bologna airports.

How to get around Trento by car

The city centre is limited traffic area (ZTL) where circulation is forbidden for motor vehicles from 00.00 to 24.00 both on weekdays and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In the city fee- paying car parking spaces are indicated with blue lines, applicable during the hours 8.00-19.30 on weekdays (including Saturdays).

The A, 2, 4, 7, 8, 13 and 17 bus lines provide facilities for disabled users. The information centre for the disabled, managed by the Handicrea co-operative in Via S. Operational from 7.00 to 22.30, running every 15 minutes at the busiest times (7.00-9.00, 11.30- 14.30 and 17.00-20.30) and every 30 minutes at other times.

Every Saturday the Trento tourist office organises guided visits to Buonconsiglio Castle, starting from the office at Via Manci, 2 at 10 a.m. The cost of the visit is 3 euro; free for holders of Trento Card .
