Prof. Dr. Seyhun ŞAHİN ABSTRACT Britain used the Monarchy regime in the state tradition that has continued since its foundation. It is also a known fact that this regime was subjected to criticism for various reasons. In the history of England, this regime was interrupted, different forms of administration were tested, however, it was considered as a period between 1649- 1660 as a period in which the country described this testing process as a conquest period as a rulership and did not include the regime stability in history in a sense. The events in these eleven years revealed the contradictions in the country's domestic and foreign policies. It slowed down the country's development. Wales, Scotland and Ireland are detached from central government. Amendments were made within the scope of Parliament to connect with the central government. In this thesis, one of the centuries old resources between 1600 years and 1700 years focused on the age of interregnum, that is, between 1649-1660. Special attention was paid to the use of primary sources, to the third parties who gave information about the statements, speeches, notes, and personalities of the personalities of the time. Typical feature of the period; It was observed that the chronology of personalities, formations, facts, events, and the process experienced were intertwined with each other and an effort was made to transfer them accordingly. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief.

The series is reproduced here with the kind permission of Charles Kightly and Anthony Barton. Typographical errors have been corrected and comments on the original articles are shown in bold within square brackets.] Important colour notes for modellers, this month considering Parliamentary infantry, by Charles Kightly and Anthony Barton. During the Civil Wars there were no regimental colours as such, each company of an infantry regiment having its own. A full strength regiment, therefore, might have as many as ten, one each for the colonel's company, lieutenant-colonel's company, major's company, first, second, third captain's company etc. All the standards of the regiment were of the same basic colour, with a system of differencing which followed one of three patterns, as follows. In most cases the colonel's colour was a plain standard in the regimental colour (B1), sometimes with 2 a motto (A1). All the rest, however, had in their top left hand corner a canton with a cross of St. George in red on white; lieutenant-colonels' colours bore this canton and no other device. In the system most commonly followed by both sides (pattern 1) the major's colour had a 'flame' or 'stream blazant' emerging from the bottom right hand corner of the St. George (A3), while the first captain's company bore one device, the second captain's two devices, and so on for as many colours as there were companies.

UNIT 3: THEMATIC STUDIES FROM A BROAD HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE 3C. The DevelopmentThe Voyages of Warfare, of Discovery and c.1250 to the present day.Conquest of the Americas, 1492-1522 Causes of war. Have wars always had the same causes over time? Causes of war in general. Overview “Every age had its own kind of war, its limiting conditions and its own peculiar preconceptions.” - Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), Prussian general and military theorist. There can be no single cause of war. The origins of conflict over time have been diverse and complex but they have basic similarities and characteristics. Political, economic, religious, nationalistic and ideological factors have been the causes of war and warfare itself has been shaped by science and technology. Recent research has revealed that there have only been 292 years without war since 3,600 BC. In ancient times nomadic peoples went to war over grazing rights and the prospects of plunder. The Roman Empire was established by warfare and ultimately destroyed by it. Religion was a major cause of war in early times while in the modern era imperialism and commercial rivalry have pushed nations to war. With causes there are consequences. The cost has been over 150 million war- related deaths of which 96% have occurred in the last 400 years. The concept of “Total War” in more recent times, where civilians become targets, has increased the death toll. In the First World War there were 8.4 million military and 1.4 million civilian deaths. In the Second World War there were 16.9 million military and 34.3 million civilian deaths.

It enabled them to legally confiscate the real and personal property of anyone supporting King Charles, as well as all Catholics, irrespective of whether they were actively involved in the war or not.

Original material from this dissertation was published by Cambridge University Press in volume 57 of The Historical Journal as “The Curse of Meroz and the English Civil War” (June, 2014). Many librarians have helped me to navigate archives on both sides of the Atlantic. I am especially grateful to those from London’s livery companies, the London Metropolitan Archives, the Guildhall Library, the National Archives, and the British Library, the Bodleian, the Huntington and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. Personal debts are due to the many scholars and individuals who tipped me off to the bounty of lesser-known holdings and their contents. Special thanks, however, are owed to Jason Peacey for sharing his unrivaled knowledge of archival materials during the 1640s on numerous occasions.
