New President elected for the Republic of Cyprus

Presidential elections were held in Cyprus on 17 February 2013 and there was no candidate that obtained 50,00% of the vote from the first round. A runoff was held on 24 February 2013 with elected the new president of the Republic of Cyprus winning in the second round with 57.48%. His oppo- nent ruling AKEL candidate Stavros Malas, secured 42.5%. Nicos Anastasiades is elected the 7th president of the Republic of Cyprus.

Mr. Anastasiades certain quotes from his speech “My first priority is to reinstate Cyprus’ credibility,” “I’m determined to work together with our EU partners, and - at the same time - fulfil our responsibilities to the utmost. I am committed to making all the necessary measures to steer our country out of the economic crisis.’’

The President-elect, Nicos Anastasiades, received congratulatory telegrams and wishes for his election to the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus from the President of the Russian Federation, Mr Vladimir Putin, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Joachim Gauck, the , Mr Sauli Niisto, the German Chancellor, Dr , the Prime Minister of , Mr Brey, the British Prime Minister, Mr David Cameron, the Prime Minister of Finland, Mr Jyrki Katainen, the Ambassa- dor of Georgia, on behalf of the , Mr Gaioz Japaridze and the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, Mr William Hague.

The President-elect has appointed Nobel economics laureate Christopher Pissarides to head the country’s newly formed economic policy council.
