ABSTRACTS Conference on the Music of South, Central and West Asia Harvard University, March 4-6, 2016 Margarethe Adams, SUNY Stony Brook In a State of Belief: Korean Church Performance in Kazakhstan The postsecular may be less a new phase of cultural development than it is a working through of the problems and contradictions in the secularization process itself (Dunn 2010:92). Critical theorist, Allen Dunn describes the skepticism of the enlightenment and the disenchantment of modern society as inherently negative. But for those who lived during the Soviet era, the negative aspects of secularization (the closing of mosques, synagogues, and churches; the persecution of religious leaders, and more) were accompanied by a powerfully optimistic ideology with a strong social message promising widespread social change. The Soviet State may not have swept all its citizens along in its optimism, but its departure, after seventy years, left a palpable ideological void. This paper will examine one of the many imported religious institutions that flooded into Central Asia after the fall of the Soviet Union Korean evangelical worship. In this study, based on ethnographic research conducted between 2004 and 2015, I examine Korean church-going practices over the past decade in Almaty, Kazakhstan, particularly focusing on dance, gesture, and musical performance during worship and in holiday celebrations. I seek to clarify how transnational networks are implicated in religious institutions in postsecular Central Asia. Transnationalist discourse figures prominently in interviews with congregation members, both in discussion of family ties to Korea, and in the ways they link the aesthetic choices of gesture to imported styles of worship. -

The article on Fitnet Khanim in Fati'n Efendi's Tezkire is as usual of the slightest, and later writers such as Zihni Efendi the author of 'Famous Women', and Ahmed Mukh- tcir Efendi, who has compiled a little book entitled 'Our Poetesses,' have been able to add but little to his meagre details. This poetess, whose personal name was Zubeyde, belonged to a talented and distinguished family, her father, Mehemmed Es^ad Efendi, being Sheykh-ul-Islam under Mah- mud I, and her brother, Mehemmed Sherif Efendi, holding the same high office under '^Abd-ul-Hamid I. The father is said to have been skilled in music, an extraordinary accom- pHshmcnt in a member of the 'ulcma, while both he and his son were gifted, though in far less measure than his daughter, with poetic talent. The arts are vital elements of a healthy society that benefits the nations even in difficult social and economic times. Based on the previous studies this research was conducted for the first time in Pakistan to explore the historical background of public art correlated with cultural and religious ethics. Though, Pakistan has a rich cultural history yet the role of modern public art is new and often used unintentionally. Our findings of different surveys conducted in Pakistan including oldest cities such as Lahore, Peshawar and newly developed, the capital city, Islamabad concluded that Public art has a rich cultural and historical background and the local community are enthusiastically connected to it. Different community groups prefer different types of public art in their surroundings depends on the city’s profile, cultural background, and religious mindset of the local community. Overall, the sculptures and depiction of animated beings are not considering right and debatable among the Pakistani societies. -

For Immediate Release 6 January 2020 Second Lahore Biennale: between the sun and the moon Curated by Hoor Al Qasimi Features 20+ New Commissions and Work by More Than 70 International Artists Installed Across Cultural and Heritage Sites Throughout Lahore, Pakistan, from 26 January to 29 February 2020 Lahore, Pakistan—6 January 2020—The Lahore Biennale Foundation today revealed a list of over 70 participating artists for the second edition of the Lahore Biennale (LB02), running from 26 January through 29 February 2020. Curated by Hoor Al Qasimi, Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, LB02: between the sun and the moon brings a plethora of artistic projects to cultural and heritage sites throughout the city of Lahore including more than 20 new commissions by artists from across the region and around the world, including Alia Farid, Diana Al-Hadid, Hassan Hajjaj, Haroon Mirza, Hajra Waheed and Simone Fattal, among many others. Other participating artists include Anwar Saeed, Rasheed Araeen and the late Madiha Aijaz. With a focus on the Global South, where ongoing social disaffection is being aggravated by climate change, LB02 responds to the cultural and ecological history of Lahore and aims to awaken awareness of humanity’s daunting contemporary predicament. Report on State of Conservation of Shalamar Gardens 37 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Fort & Shalamar Gardens in Lahore, Pakistan were inscribed on the World Heritage List of monuments in 1981. The state of Conservation of the Fort and Shalamar Gardens were discussed in the 42nd Session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in July, 2018 at Manama, Bahrain. In that particular session the Committee took various decisions and requested the State Party to implement them and submit a State of Conservation Report to the World Heritage Centre for its review in the 43rd Session of the World Heritage Committee. The present State of Conservation Report consists of two parts. In the first part, progress on the decisions of the 42nd Session of the WHC has been elaborated and the second part of the report deals with the conservation efforts of the State Party for Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens. Regarding implementation of Joint World Heritage Centre/ICOMOS Reactive Monitoring Mission (RMM) recommendations, the State Party convened a series of meetings with all the stakeholders including Federal Department of Archaeology, UNESCO Office Islamabad, President ICOMOS Pakistan, various government departments of the Punjab i.e., Punjab Mass-Transit Authority, Lahore Development Authority, Metropolitan Corporation of Lahore, Zonal Revenue Authorities, Walled City of Lahore Authorities, Technical Committee on Shalamar Gardens and eminent national & international heritage experts and deliberated upon the recommendations of the RMM and way forward for their implementation. -

HISTORY OF THE PROJECT The National College of Arts Archives (NCAA) is the repository of the non-current records of the institution, dating back to its inception in 1875 as the Mayo School of Arts (MSA), Lahore. It has been set up as a result of the Project for the Conservation and Cataloguing of Old Records, started in the summer of 1999 in preparation of the 125th anniversary of the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore. Under the Project, records of the institution were retrieved from various sources and collection was processed initially with the help of students and staff of the college. Later, Punjab Archives, Lahore and Conservation Laboratory, Lahore Museum assisted in the conservation and development of the Archives Project. The records in the NCAA have an enduring historical and research value and form an important part of the institution’s corporate memory and can easily be accessed for research purposes. OBJECTIVES ▪ To access non-current records of MSA/NCA which have research and historical value. ▪ To search, locate, preserve and conserve the records and art artifacts of enduring historical significance ▪ To advise researchers and students on the use of records for research purposes. ▪ To advise researchers on the location of non-public records, art artifacts and manuscripts relating to the arts and crafts history of Pakistan. ▪ To facilitate the publication of such material in liaison with the Research and Publication Center (RPC), NCA. Report on Mission to Evaluate the State of Conservation of the World Heritage Site of the SHALAMAR GARDENS Lahore (Pakistan) 4–9 October 2000 ROBERT DE JONG (President, ICOMOS International Committee on Historic Gardens and Landscapes) 49-51 rue de la Fédération - F-75015 Paris - France - Tel + 33 1 45 67 67 70 - Fax + 33 1 45 66 06 22 Report on Mission to Evaluate the State of Conservation of the World Heritage Site of the SHALAMAR GARDENS, Lahore (Pakistan) 1 BACKGROUND TO THE MISSION The mission concerned World Heritage Site (No. 171-172) – the Fort and Shalamar Gardens of Lahore (Pakistan) The reason for the mission was the information received by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre from the national authorities of Pakistan that the Department of Archaeology was proposing to "restore the demolished hydraulic works of Shalamar Gardens," and that the authorities "had expressed their intention to nominate two sites (ie the Fort and Shalamar Gardens of Lahore and Taxila) to the List of World Heritage in Danger" (Letter from the Director, UNESCO World Heritage Centre, to H.E. Mr Shararyar M. Khan, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Pakistan to France Permanent Delegation of Pakistan to UNESCO, 2 August 2000, WHC/74/400/ PKS/00/JT/425). The Centre and ICOMOS had also already considered sending a mission "to elaborate a comprehensive management plan for both the Fort and Shalamar Gardens of Lahore site and the Taxila site". During its 24th Session in Paris on 26 June–1 July 2000, the Bureau of the World Heritage Committee decided to request the World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS "to organise a reactive monitoring mission to the Fort and Shalamar Gardens." Scientific Cooperations International Journal of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Vol. 1, Issue 1, September 2015 SHEIKHUPURA FORT: A FORGOTTEN MONUMENT1 Mariam Saleem Farooqi Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Pakistan is a country with a rich cultural heritage built from the traditions of the scores of civilizations that have lived and thrived on its soil. Under each new ruler, art and architecture took on a new shape – learning from each other and growing. Sheikupura Fort in the Punjab province is a result of Mughal, Sikh and Hindu influences on the region. The crumbling structure is filled with exquisite frescoes depicting typical Sikh art, but ineffective preservation efforts from Pakistani and international authorities have put the entire Fort and the art contained within at risk of permanent ruin. This paper seeks to explore the mixed cultural and political history of the art through the intricate frescoes left behind on its walls and the themes used by the artisans of the time. Keywords: frescoes; heritage; preservation; Sikh; art 1. Introduction The Islamic Republic of Pakistan stands on soil that has seen the immense glory and majesty of many powerful empires of the past. Grand relics of these great empires lay scattered all across Pakistan – in small cities and large – in the form of palaces, forts, tombs, havelis2, etc. Unfortunately, many great treasures of the past have completely collapsed and are lost forever. The fault lies with careless handling, a lack of preservation, and a severe shortage of funds and hands willing to undertake any sort of restoration work on these monuments. -
The Age of Akbar
CHAPTER 3 THE AGE OF AKBAR MUGHAL THEORIES OF KINGSHIP AND STATE POLITY Akbar is generally recognized as the greatest and most capable of the Mughal rulers. Under him Mughal polity and statecraft reached maturity; and under his guidance the Mughals changed from a petty power to a major dynastic state. From his time to the end of the Mughal period, artistic production on both an imperial and sub-imperial level was closely linked to notions of state polity, religion and kingship. Humayun died in 1556, only one year after his return to Hindustan. Upon hearing the call to prayers, he slipped on the steep stone steps of the library in his Din-Panah citadel in Delhi. Humayun's only surviving son and heir- apparent, Akbar, then just fourteen years of age, ascended the throne and ruled until 1605 the expanding Mughal empire. Until about 1561, Akbar was under the control of powerful court factions, first his guardian, Bhairam Khan, and then the scheming Maham Anga, a former imperial wet-nurse. Between about 1560 and 1580, Akbar devoted his energies to the conquest and then the con- solidation of territory in north India. This he achieved through battle, marriage, treaty and, most significantly, administrative reform. Concurrent with these activities, Akbar developed an interest in religion that, while initially a personal concern, ultimately transformed his concept of state. Many of the policies he adopted, such as the renunciation of the poll-tax (jiziya) for non- Muslims, had a solid political basis as well as a personal one, for Akbar, much more than his Mughal predecessors, saw every advantage in maintaining good relations with the Hindu majority.
