This research has been done at the Department of Transport & Planning (T&P). Through a conversation with Niels van Oort, who is a researcher at TU Delft, he came up with this research topic, which is to do the after analysis. This after analysis holds that the tram network of Amsterdam after the implementation of the Noord-Zuidlijn had to be researched concerning bottlenecks. Doing the analysis was hard work, but with the help of both external supervisors, Niels van Oort and Ties Brands, I could get the job done. Also almost every week there was a meeting with the supervisors, who were critical on the work that was submitted in that specific week. That helped to improve the work that was already done. Also, the criticism of fellow students helped to improve the work. I hereby want to thank everyone that was involved in this thesis. -

Distribution activities are vital for society but are also the cause of environmental and social problems. Transporting goods in urban areas, where most logistics chains start or end, is an activity that increasingly generates severe problems for all stakeholders, for instance, local authorities, the logistic industry, customers and society in general. New transport solutions are necessary in order to decrease traffic congestion, noise and traffic pollution, e.g., emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in urban areas. A possible solution to these problems is to transform the current freight distribution system within cities, for example by favouring the enhancement of intermodal transport alternatives, i.e. combining road and rail transport. Information has been collected through a literature review and interviews in Amsterdam and from these results a conceptual model is presented, as well as a low emission concept using electric vehicles on trams in Gothenburg. The concept utilizes techniques from the shipping industry, train industry, and the car industry. MONTREAL — There’s no budget, no timeline, no proven technology, much less shovels in the ground or even a signed contract. But it’s substantially more than an idle dream. Montreal’s Île-Ste-Hélène is scheduled to be the North American test site this year for Bombardier Inc.’s Primove pilot project, a technology that is being tested at four sites in Germany, where the firm’s rail division is based. Primove’s mandate is to develop electric mass-transit propulsion systems, but not the vehicles themselves. Intended to bypass the conventional notion of electric buses and trolley buses powered by cumbersome batteries, Primove rests on an inductive transfer of power from ground-based electrical power sources to very small batteries placed under, not in, the bus. Sensors on the vehicles would store the energy emitted by the electro-magnetic field, but only in small quantities, feeding the bus or trolley sufficiently to reach the next power source a short distance away. Overview Adelaide's transport action group People for Public Transport held its annual conference 'Missed Opportunities - New Possibilities' on Saturday 25 October 2003 at Balyana Conference Centre, Clapham, attracting some notable speakers and considerable interest. The next three pages present a brief overview of the event and highlights of the speakers' comments. The keynote speaker was Dr Paul Mees, a well known public transport advocate from Melbourne, where he teaches transport and land use planning in the urban planning program at the University of Melbourne. He was President of the Public Transport Users Association (Vic) from 1992 to 2001. (See separate panel page 42.) Dr Alan Perkins talked about the benefits of making railway stations centres for the community, with commercial and medium density housing clustered around the stations and noted places where this had not happened. He stressed the importance of urban design and security at stations. Dr Perkins' work has focused on the nexus of urban planning, transport, greenhouse impacts and sustainability, through research and policy development. He is Senior Transport Policy Analyst with the SA Department of Transport and Urban Planning. See below. Mr Roy Arnold, General Manager of TransAdelaide' talked about his vision for the future of Adelaide's suburban rail, including the new trams, to be introduced in 2005. This is summarised on page 42. Mr Nell Smith, General Manager of Swan Transit (Perth) and a director of Torrens Transit in Adelaide, has been deeply involved in the service reviews that have led to the reversal of long term patronage decline in both cities. -
