MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS

Meet Coleen Flaherty, a bookstore volunteer for 10 years. Coleen is excited about working with people who love libraries and books. She especially enjoys helping young children select books as they develop their love of reading. Coleen moved to Encinitas in 2008 after she retired from High School Counseling (M.S.) and 7 years of physical education and heath and coaching at Hart High School in the Santa Clarita Valley. She and her husband, Dick, live in a remodeled family vacation home very close by the Library. Coleen is a ‘valley girl,’ who grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended San Fernando Valley State (now Cal State Northridge.) Coleen tells me that she started girls’ sports at her high school and coached all the sports for 3 years until they hired more girls’ coaches. She then settled into Volleyball and Softball. For the next 30 years, she helped students plot their classes and future, many as head counselor. Coleen is proud to be associated with our beautiful Encinitas Library. She loves the positive vibes and friends that she has made at the Bookstore. Joining a Book Club has opened her eyes to new genres of books and has encouraged her to read more. Coleen is our Sorter extraordinaire! Thank you, Coleen, for helping to make the Bookstore a better place. - Joyce King, Bookstore Manager MAKE A DIFFERENCE - VOLUNTEER !

RED HOT READS The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt The Sisters Brothers is a comedic yet violent Western novel set in 1851. The sisters brothers, Charlie and Eli (the narrator), are directed by their employer, the Commodore, a shadowy tycoon from Oregon City, Oregon, to find and kill a prospector in the California gold fields. Before killing him, the brothers are directed to steal his secret formula for locating gold in river beds. In a series of short, episodic chapters, Charlie and Eli encounter on their journey various characters and get into numerous scrapes. In the vein of “True Grit” the language is stilted in the 19th century style. The author’s portrait of San Francisco during the Gold Rush is classic. The book, published in 2011, has been made into a movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly and will be out this fall. Look for The Sisters Brothers in the Friends of the Encinitas Library bookstore or check it out from our library.

The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books: Christopher Columbus, His Son and the Quest to Build the World's Greatest Library by Edward Wilson-Lee Wilson-Lee, a scholar of late medieval and early modern literatures as well as the history of print and libraries, has created a cabinet of wonders with this book. It encompasses the biographies of Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) and his son Hernando (1488–1539) and the saga of an extraordinary library “that would collect everything.” As a child, Hernando served the court as a page; at 13, he was a crew member on Columbus’s fourth voyage; as a young man, he ventured briefly in his father’s New World domain; and he was his father’s biographer. Wilson-Lee also brings to rich life the cultural milieu of the age—the rituals of court life and the political intrigues during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. But most of all, this is a biography of a library: having inherited his father’s collection, Hernando made it his mission to acquire every printed thing he could, traveling all over Europe to acquire 15,000–20,000 printed materials, including some images and music. The ravages of inheritance disputes and time has reduced the remaining number of items to less than 400. Wilson- Lee’s fascinating account brings back to wholeness “the largest private library of the day” while revealing the son of a renowned man as, among other things, a master librarian.
