    NORTHERN IRELAND HERITAGE GARDENS TRUST OCCASIONAL PAPER, No. 7 (2016) Sources of plants for, and distribution of plants from, the Royal Dublin Society’s Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, 1795–1879: an annotated checklist E. Charles Nelson In The brightest jewel: a history of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin (Nelson & McCracken 1987), we accounted briefly for the many sources of plants grown in the Gardens throughout its history. Manuscript registers of plants (including seeds and other propagules) donated to [●], and those distributed from [✧], the Gardens survive especially for the decades following the appointment of Ninian Niven as Curator in 1834. Niven seems to have been the first to make a continuous record of donated and distributed plants – for the period before 1834 records are scattered, scanty and almost certainly very incomplete. In this checklist, the records for Niven’s curatorship (1834–1838) have been combined with those sparse records that have been recovered for the previous three decades, as well as those for David Moore’s curatorship (1838–1879). Moore, like Niven, seems to have taken personal responsibility for keeping a register of donations to and from the Gardens. In terms of the names of the plants, the manuscript registers for the pre-1880 years provide disappointingly little detail. The full names of the plants received or shared were rarely recorded – in the following checklist fewer than 130 species' names are included (and some of these have been inferred from the vernacular names employed), a ratio of one plant name for every seven donors/recipients. In short, the register of donations cannot account for the thousands of plants that were certainly cultivated in the Glasnevin Botanic Gardens between its formation in 1795 and the death of David Moore in June 1879.

These latest plaques are spread across Ulster, from Newry in the south east, to the north west in Co Donegal. Apart from our busy plaque activities, the Circle has been hard at work enhancing the New Dictionary of Ulster Biography. All our work is unpaid, and Circle members meet regularly in committee every month, as fundraising and planning the plaques are always on-going activities, with the summer months often busy with events. I would like to thank my colleagues on the Circle committee for their support and their valued contributions throughout the year. A voluntary body like ours depends entirely on the continuing commitment of its committee members. On behalf of the Circle I would also like to record how much we appreciate the generosity of our funders: many of the City and District Councils, and those individuals, organisations, and businesses without whose help and support the Circle could not continue in its work commemorating and celebrating the many distinguished people from, or significantly connected with, Ulster, who are exemplified by those remembered this year.

This volume is described in R. J. Hayes, Manuscript Sources for the History of Irish Civilisation, as ‘A volume of documents relating to the Parsons family of Birr, Earls of Rosse, and lands in Offaly and property in Birr, 1595-1699’, and has been microfilmed by the National Library of Ireland (n.526: p. 799). It includes letters of c.1640 from Rev. Richard Heaton, the early and important Irish botanist. 2 1595-1699 Late 19th-century, and not quite complete, table of contents to A/1 (‘MSS ii’) [in the handwriting of the 5th Earl of Rosse (d. 1918)], and including the following entries: ‘1. 1595.     THE BIRDS OF IRELAND. Order PASSERES. Family TURDIDAE Subfamily TURDINNAE THE MISTLE-THRUSH. Turdus viscivorus, Linnæus. Though now resident, common, and widely distributed, this bird was apparently unknown in Ireland before the nineteenth century. A Mistle-Thrush, shot early in 1808 in the Co. Antrim was the first Irish example that Thompson had heard of during the first half of the century the spread and increase of this species was noticed throughout Ireland, the Western coast being apparently the last reached. Thus Mr. W. Sinclair remembers it in Tyrone in1820, but it arrived in Western Donegal ten years later. Up to 1860 it was unknown in Achill, but now breeds there. In Western Connaught it is scarce, but is believed still to be on the increase throughout Ireland in general. Flocks occur from June to the end of autumn, and may be seen in the same locality for days together. These perform local migrations, but disperse before winter. In November there is an immigration from Great Britain, though on a much smaller scale than that of the Song-Thrush or Blackbird. Some Mistle-Thrushes visit Rathlin Island in frosts, and Valentia is another winter resort. The Mistle-Thrush is a welcome addition to the song-birds of Ireland, from October onwards it may be heard in our mild climate; at first rarely, but more frequently and fully as each winter month passes, until the full song is delivered in February and March; while even frost and snow will not always silence it. I have heard one uttering its notes in short snatches between each triple stroke of its wings while it flew.
